1. What were you using to baton? (I have, in an emergency used a 2 lb sledge and had the EXACT same result)

2. It looks like you cracked it after the first bit of the scales came off, why keep going when you could have just replaced the scales?

Battoning is properly done with WOODEN mallet or branch or piece of wood....

Hey, those bushcraft are all 5mm thick and full tang. If you can't batton with those, what for? ....

I agree that if you hit your knife with a hammer and it breaks, it is your problem, not the manufacturer's.

Are you saying that if you hit your knife with a piece of wood and it breaks, it is the responsibility of the manufacturer to replace it? I'm not picking a fight. Just asking. I'm not sure I have a firm opinion either way.

I try to avoid putting large holes like that close to the tang/ricasso transition. Thats the "teeter-totter pivot point" (sorry to use such technical terms I hope you're following me) and gets put under alot of stress. It looks as if it had plenty of stock still. I think its a well built knife. I see no grain growth or imperfections in the break... infact the grain refinement is excellent from what my naked eye could pick up. O1 is tough stuff. Impact shock is an unpredictable force. That's why I don't put much faith in destruction testing that includes it. It's like knapping flint... hard as hell until you hit it "just right".

Savage isn't condeming Spyderco and Sal seems interested in finding out what happened... what more can you ask for?

I look forward to the follow-up.

Rick

I love all the guys chastising the OP and making statements like 'thats what a hatchet is for'. My gosh, what do these people actually use their knives for? Cutting cheese and string? My child's safety scissors handles the string well thank you and I have an awesome piece of wire connected to two pieces of wood that cuts cheese like nobodie's business. If anybody knows how to cut the cheese, it is me!!!

Maybe these folks just like the thought of a knife and not the thought of using one? :(
Anyhow, knives break once in a while. Fact of life. Like loosing your virginity, Savagesicslayer is among the experienced users now on this forum :D

Good point Ken, there have been countless threads on knives breaking under "stress"
It happens occasionally and is the luck of the draw unfortunately. Good on Sal that he's
taking the knife back for analysis which will only improve future offerings. This in no way
should turn people off from buying the Spyderco brand.

tic-tic-tic-tic-tic-DING....... ohp.... Ken, the waranty on your S-Curve just expired. Best of luck to you, sir.

Oh crap.... you know where I live.:(

Rick:p

LOL Rick....the S-curve has held up so far. I sure as hell don't baby it, but I plan to hit you up on its 1 year anniversary for an old Magnessun sharpening refurb :D I got her tuned, but never quite like when you gave her to me :)

Closed on the original poster's request. The knife is on its way to Spyderco and he may start a new thread when the results are in.
