Spyderco Carbon Fiber?

JNewell, if you look at the post above mine you can see I was only answering his question with his concerns about oil, grease, brake fluid, transmission fluid, etc...

Yes, very fair.

Now, I'm going to call this thing a wrap again, and maybe it can drift away:p
Just kidding JNewel, as I know you were away for 24hr, and thats the only reason you brought it up from page 2.

It seems to be staying civil now, with zero bashing of anyone. Lets please keep it that way:thumbup:

Ken, just for clarity, I was not disagreeing with you. Solvents would be somewhat apt to increase the risk of delamination, although in theory good composites are pretty much solvent-proof.

so its not CF?

Well, no, but at some level...a good composite is just...a good composite, regardless of what the fibers are. For our purposes here, in terms of performance rather than looks, carbon fiber doesn't really outperform G10 or the nishijiin glass fiber.

not complaining, just wondering. all that matters to me is that it looks awesome. which it does, i like the depth it has

New here and very shocked by the "CF" Spyderco uses. But I still love my Sage1 even tho the scales aren't full CF.

Not so fast, Lycosa. Lets get some other mfgs involved. I had a Benchmade "limited edition" 705 that appeared to be grey or silver colored CF. A few months of carry and the edges wore through to show it was a plastic "sleeve" with the pattern in it over shiny aluminum. To be fair I don't recall if it was actually called Carbon Fiber and I've seen other BM's with real CF but I was really shocked at the time. I used to be enamored of the look of CF but there's so much, both real and fake, now it's become old hat and too slick for the most part. My only CF now is the original Mili in PPCF; CF pattern but nice and grippy. Oh, yeah, and a CF shelf to put my turntable on that is 3/4" thick, about 30 lbs and totally non resonant.

Those were not CF. Benchmades uses solid CF.

The only Benchmade with CF that I have owned, and yes it's real CF.

Nice knife Rob. I wish I hadn't missed the CF mini Onslaught!
Don't want to pay what they're bringing now. I found one with a Black blade at a good price, but don't like black blades.

Nice knife! Did some searching and the one I had was KOTM May 2000. Like I said, I've seen and owned other BM with real CF and they were great but the thrill is gone now that everyone is on the CF bandwagon. Even bought a pair of cheap sunglasses that had fake CF inserts.

So I stumbled across this dead horse, and I happened to have a stick:

Does anybody here deny that Sal stated, quite clearly, the next issue of their catalogs would elucidate the whole "carbon fiber" situation on the scales?

Just in case you're about to say that it was shades of gray somehow, let me find a little quote:
Sal said:
Not a problem for us. We will add it to the next catalog, assuming we're using the same material.

So just checked their newly released catalogs (believe it or not I'm not actually this anal, it only occurred to me while reading through, and guess what? Still just called "carbon fiber."

Regular catalog:

If I had to guess I'd say they already had the catalog done up before this thread. I imagine it would cost a good bit to have it reprinted.

Do you have any idea how long ago that catalog went to press? That is not the next catalog, that's the current catalog, for purposes of a commment like the one Sal made. :( :thumbdn:

Hey Hunterseeker,

The speed with which you jumped in to call me a liar adds new meaning to "hover and pounce" and not very favorable to Spyderco.

As mentioned, the catalog was printed in October, a 5 month project. We'll begin the "next" catalog in June '13. We'll do some research with our customers to see if they want a carbon fiber / G-10 laminate, a 3x carbon weave / linear carbon laminate (I guess that could be called solid CF) or a 3x weave carbon laminate, and produce and print accordingly. We did change it on our website though.

I don't know what I may have done to piss you off, but don't you think we ought to get it sorted? What can I do to perhaps adjust your aninmosity?
