Spyderco CPM S110V MIlitary Full Review

So, how about a s110v/204p face-off? Seems like they should be fairly close. Wonder what ease of sharpening and toughness quotients would throw in the mix?

Those two steels aren't even on the same planet performance wise.

I tested enough M390 class steels over the years, even the customs won't touch what the Military did. ;)

Head to head, same model knife and thickness behind the edge?

Would be no contest. ;)

I tested the 204P Para 2 before and it did 420...

Compared to the S110V Military at 1080..

Mule team in S110V did 600... (60 HRC).... Very conservative HT for S110V.

S110V Manix 2 LW did 720 at stock thickness... .030" behind the edge. (62 HRC)

Thanks Jim, I think I just found my next folder, but the Manix with the shorter blade with the same steel.

Cool, let me know what you think.

I just contacted Whitty at USA Made Blade to see if he can get it in. If so I would rather go through them. If not I have found it a couple of other places. So I'm working on it :)

As always a nice comprehensive and exhausting test! I've never felt the Milly was right for me because of the handle, just doesn't fit my hand for some reason, otherwise it's a great blade shape but for me the handle grip I just could not get to really love it :( I did handle a ParaMilly but didn't like the top compression lock, which is JUST me folks it's a great lock, but my fingers just didn't cotton to looking for the lock release up there...so you see how my brain works eh ? :)

Thanks for the great review!

hey Jim :)
You did not need to sell me on a Mili - it is already my favorite carry for chores (too big for office, but edc for everything else) despite many years of ignoring it and using PM2. I discovered that the extra blade length really comes in handy for lots of things, so Mili has replaced PM2 most of the time (although I still like the compression lock). I used to think the Mili handle was too long for my size small hands (and the PM2 was a perfect fit), but even that has evolved - I find the Mili gives more options for hand placement and the extra length does not interfere with anything.
But my question to you now - you obviously love the 110V and I never expected that much of a cutting performance bump compared to my usual carry S90V or even Cruwear or M390 (those are the ones I carry the most). But you also seemed to really like the 10V in your Darrin Sanders custom FB (I have one he made in 4V and love it, btw).
So my question is, if you could have a mili in any steel, what would be your preference? The 110V is obviously available and you already said it was your new love ;), but what about 10V? 4V? Just curious if there are still versions you would like to see.
thanks

I have always liked S110V, it was just so hard to get in the past.

Both 10V and 4V are excellent steels.

Any steel?

Would be one of the following: S125V, S110V, or 10V for me personally.

Could someone keep the edge maintained with frequent touch up on the Sharpmaker? I figure it may not be up to the task, but am hoping that by staying in top of it someone could keep it sharp. What do you think?

I don't see why not, I maintain my S110V kitchen knife with ceramics.

A few passes on the brown stones every once in awhile couldn't hurt.

Well that's encouraging. It would probably take me two years to equal what you cut in your testing during my normal use of a knife. I just don't want something I cant maintain myself. Thanks for the reply.

S110V is not that hard to maintain.

The brown stones work great, light passes, and only a few.... Like 3 on each side just to bring it back.

Work one side at a time, bring up a small bur and then do the other side the same way, then with a very light pass remove the bur and you are done.

I find VG10 harder to sharpen than S110V. Don't know why. It's the only steel I have that I cannot get sharp some of the time.:D Guess I'm constantly chasing the wire edge around.

My S110V Military arrived yesterday, first Millie. Immediately I noticed how light it was for the size. 121 grams on my scale, that's amazing for the size. The knife feels good in hand. Did a little cutting, so far so good. I'm keen to give it a workout.

Thanks, Jim! Tis an epic thread!
It took way too long for me to get to this realization but give me a fully serrated Spyderedge any day!! No explanation needed. I just scored a P1 Spyderedge so I'm all set.
