Spyderco dragonfly kept me out of the hospital today...true story! Thanks Sal!

Damn, your fishing expeditions are the only thing more bad-ass than that story about cutting the hat/hook out of your head.

I'm truly jealous - very nice fishing and glad you're ok.

Your sick, look at all the sportfishers in the background that is where you usually would man those fish in....

The wee Dragonfly is a little under-rated. When i travel abroad i always pack in 3 items: Dragonfly PE, Surefire flashlight and Cold Steel mini kubotan. Only ever used the Dragonfly for utility stuff, but it has always been a great comfort to have such a sharp blade along for the ride. I always take the wee Dragonfly cause it doesnt attract attention as a weapon.

Nice story :)

Great hauls, BTW. I couldn't imagine how nerve-racking it must be to try and reel those beasts in when you are sitting in a kayak.

Awesome:thumbup: I've had a similar incident with a Muskie, the old man who owned the cabin's cut out the hook with a buck 110:eek:

Awesome story. If somebody would film that as a commercial everybody would insist that this is totally unrealistic and a made up B-Movie :D

Ya, you can see the knife hanging around my neck in the first photo. It's got a little blood on it (as any well used knife should, heh), but still looking pretty. I will write up my opinion of the blade once I've used it hard for a month or so. But I'll give you a few "teaser" first impressions.

1. Knife is super light. When I first handled it, I kind of had the impression it was "cheap". I like more solid handles, and were this not for salt use, I definitely would have chosen the g10 model with liners! At any rate, I have already been using it quite hard and it's been up to the task.

2. Ergos are great, just as I expected they would be. Not a long blade, but the blade is just a superb shape and grind! It's not a full flat grind but it is very similar IMO. Blade is thin and slices better than any folder I've ever owned. Cutting through those mackerel was literally like cutting through butter (hot)! And the tip is wonderful! Perfect shape for my uses! Again, not sure if it will take what I'm gonna throw at it, but we will see! Also, from the choked up position (which is the only logical way to grip the knife IMHO) one has unbelievable control of the small blade. Like an extension of the hand! Really! My ONLY complaint is that because of its size, I find the knife a bit awkward to open one handed. Oh, it opens, but it's no speed demon. This is no biggie, and I'm sure this will get better as I use the knife more.

3. The steel seems pretty soft to me. After slicing through a half dozen fish and chopping through some backbones, it still had a functional edge, but had definitely lost that "hair popping" factory edge. The good news is, it literally took about 8-10 passes on a fine dmt diamond stone to have it shaving sharp again. So...dulls quickly, but sharpens easy. Good news for me actually since I just got some new stones and I'm kind of getting OCD with sharpening. I'm kind of stoked to have an excuse to touch up every few days! ;-).

Ok, that's enough. I will give you more thoughts after I've given it a fair testing period. Suffice it to say my initial impression is very favorable. My only fear is that it might not hold up to hard use, but that fear might be unfounded. Time will tell.

Peace

Dude looks like you live the life!! Nice kayak too, what brand? I have a wilderness systems ride 135

I think you have been tearing it up too much and the fish are po'ed at you...it's revenge surfingringo, they are after you now!

Pura vida?

Send that in to Outdoor Life magazines, This Happened to Me section. They might print that one. A friend of mine has a story in there. The little Dragon Fly Salt is a nice little knife. And I hope the captain of that puker boat learns a lesson about knives from his observations. Sorry you lost that fish! I find it better to use a line while fishing, instead of using your head!!!????? :disillusionment:

Thanks for sharing! I will remember this story next time I get asked why I keep my knives so sharp

Longun has a good idea, but send the story to Tactical Knives magazine. I wouldnt mind reading it again :)

So where are you located? I was trying to decide based on species of fish and the trees in the back ground. Then you posted the second set of pictures and really threw me off.

Some good fishing wherever you are.

Yeah boys, keep em sharp! You never know! I'm not much into sending it off to magazines. I'll let some other guy send his story to the mags and get his name in the paper. ;-). I'm goin fishin!

Hey flamtnbker, I'm in Costa Rica, and yeah, the fishing and surfing are pretty damned good.

Just as an update, been carrying and using the dragonfly everyday and I'm completely in love with this knife! Just wish I could open it a little faster one handed. I've got a manix 2 lightweight on the way, but I'm not sure ill like it as much as the little dragonfly!

Glad you posted that, I had a VERY similar thing happen on my wedding day..the morning of, we went fishing (we were on the lake) and I got a rattle trap in the scalp, same solution; pushed it through. Bled like a stuck pig. My fishing luck was no where near yours though...I'm envious!

Awesome story!

I always look forward to your threads. There's always huge fish and great scenery.
