Spyderco Fakes & Knock Offs Info

Notice how "Golden, Colorado" is etched out of parallel with the plunge.

Buying from reputable dealers seems like cheap insurance against these increasingly exact counterfeit knives. Dealer exclusives might be even safer, only one source for un-numbered exclusives.

Spyderco, and Sal in particular, put, "Thanx much!" on all kinds of stuff. Another member here posted a prototype knife that was given to him personally by Sal, and it had, "Thanx much -Sal" engraved on the side!

I got my Para 2 from Knifeworks and the wording looks like the one pictured, not parallel on both sides either. Uh oh.

Just FYI, posted this response from Spyderco regarding my Military and the possibility of it being fake. Mine has textured G-10, not sure about the screws being metric but they are tapered not rounded, and the liners are definitely stonewashed. Not quite sure what they mean by their liners being "vibratory tumbled" if that is stone or bead blasted, but to be safe I'm returning mine.

"Thank you for writing us. It is possible that there was a mix-up in the Edge-U-Cation materials but we aren’t aware of any at this time. It could have been a one-time mistake vs. an entire batch. The liners for the Military model are vibratory tumbled; given the process though it might be difficult to notice the difference. A better indicator would be the G-10 (is it smooth or textured – ours is textured) or the screws (most knock-offs are made in China and will have metric screws). Finally another indicator would be price. Was it pricing in line with a genuine Military Model value or was it a “screaming deal”?

If you question its authenticity I would suggest that you send a picture of it to our Customer Service department (customerservice@spyderco.com). You might also want to review our forums and the Spyderco area on BladeForums. There have been recent posts regarding the knock-off Military Models that have popped up recently.
Having said all of that, my biggest suggestion to be honest would be to return the knife to the seller for a refund if you question its authenticity. The problem with knock-offs is growing and we have been actively involved on multiple levels with efforts to stop the production of knock-offs but it’s a huge issue within the industry. The best way to avoid purchasing a knock-off is to try to purchase only through authorized Dealers or trusted parties (members of well-known forums with history).

I hope this information is helpful.

Mmm, maybe it is real Para 2 on picture ? No matter how bad yellow watermarks looks . They often use photos of real stuff . And I've never seen " strongly parallel to the plunge etching" on Para. Just my two cents.

"Now, can anyone tell me that Spyderco sold by Amazon is real? Direct supplied by Amazon, not 3rd party or partner."

Saw this question asked a few pages back but didn't catch an answer. I just purchased a Delica 4 from Amazon (actually from Amazon LLC and not a vendor). Anyone have any experience with Amazon LLC either positive or negative?

*Edit: The price is quite comparable with Knife Center, only about $5 less sans shipping

Can someone tell me if this Sage II is legit? With all this talk of fakes and scammers on ebay, I'm a bit concerned... even though I'm pretty sure it's legit.

Wow This is a scary thread. I sometimes buy a lot of knives on ebay but not new knives. But I have used and sold Spyderco knives for around 18 years. I ventured into new knives along with antique knives for a while. I almost had farmers standing in line to but serrated Delicas. They were the only knife blades that would cut through the plastic that they covered the big round hay bales. And I have had a Spyderco knife from that era in my pocket all of those years .I have been kind of checking the prices on ebay and have thought about buying some more as they seem to hold their value more than most contemporary knives and they are one of the best EDC knives around. As I read this thread I am very disappointed but I guess this is the world we live in.

Freaked out when I saw this. They call it "The Paratrooper." Active listing and they're asking for a whopping $45.99

I have that knife andi made the video above comparing it to a real one. There are a couple differences more than just the liner. The point where the bevel stops is different, the jimping is angled on the real one and not on the fake. The pivot screw is the same size as the frame screws on the fake and larger on the real one. The opening forthe compression lock is rounded off on the real and sharp angles on the fake. The hole is ever so slightly smaller on the fake. The g10 isnt as textured as the real one. Here is my imgur album of some differences http://imgur.com/a/jsOKB or you could watch the video I posted
