Spyderco Fakes & Knock Offs Info

Lookout, these may be showing up on the bay soon...

No jimping, liner lock instead of compression, no way it's actually VG-10 and wrong steel for the knife anyway, etc...

No bug on the clip either. Really surprised it took this long for these to pop up. Also really glad they didn't get the comp lock figured out.

Well it was bound to happen sooner or later... I'm actually surprised it's taken this long for a knock off of the Para2!

well THANK YOU for FINALLY explaining what is fake about these knives! I have been reading through this thread from the beginning and nobody EXPLAINS to neophytes like myself exactly why they are fake. In the vintage watch world (my turf) it is tedious business to explain but worth the effort to make sure poor schlubs don't get ripped off. So now I know to check for jimping in both style and presence (or absence). lock-ups and I assume 'china' sellers can be a red flag as well. but so far thats all I know. I am sticking to US dealers until i know more.

Thanks, i saw it on ebay for like $38 and it seems harder and harder to find anything on ebay that is not a fake anymmore

Yeah, that is a real one. It is one of Spyderco's "budget" line made in China, so ~$40 is about right. It is also not a crazy popular one, so not likely to be faked.

Pardon me and my first post,,, I am contemplating a "Spiderco Para-millitary 2" after hearing good reviews from Youtube. And obviously, dont want to get ripped-off by some cheap knock-off. Any ideas as what to look for, so as to ensure success ,,, Thanks kindly. ( this will be my back-pack EDC )

Welcome. The easiest way to ensure that you're not getting a knockoff would be to buy from directly from a reputable dealer.

The fake Para 2's I have seen say "VG-10" and that blade steel is not an option for a Para 2. Another thing is the lack of a compression lock. The compression lock is located on the spine of the handle right above the pivot. The fakes I have seen are liner locks, Para's do not have a Liner lock.

Thx much guys, as always best to spend a good amount of time at the manucturers's web-site to familiarize yourself.. but man I am liking the "PM2" and the "Pacific Salt" and how bout the customizing option for the "Griptilians" on the "Benchmade" site,,, (my spelling not my goodest )

The reality is that many of thes knockoffs come from the very same factories that authentic Spyderco's are made. My daughter spent a month in China last year and told me that everybody on the streets of Beiging had fake iPhones, and that they were manufactured in the same facility that makes the authentic Apple iPhone. If it's made in China and Taiwan, chances are you'll find a fake copy readily available. My daughter, btw, bought one of those fake iPhones for less than $75.00 and wanted to show me that they were every bit an iPhone, just odd internals...it was confiscated by Customs in NYC.

not sure if it was discussed in this thread or not but another thing you want to look at is make sure tehy're not factory seconds. meaning the knife is the same metal as they are for regular production but spyderco won't cover the warranty and they are not worth near as much. the thing to look for is on the spine of the blade near the handle spyderco puts a notch on the right hand side it almost looks like a triangle pretty consistant with all the ones I've had and recently sold. I need to look through some pictures and see if I can find some of what it looks like.

I see no notch on this one.

That one is fine and not a factory second.
