Spyderco Fakes & Knock Offs Info

There are no known fakes of the sage 2, and doubt they are able to fake it effectively at the sage 2 price point. The only question is does the chinese seller have several in-stock or was it only one, if he has several then maybe I would be worried.

He does. I will check out the finishing on it once I receive it. I am assuming if it is a fake, some of the beveling by the cutout for the spydie hole won't be there?

How can you tell the titanium military is fake? How can we spot it if someone tries to sell it here on BF?

Yes Sal, but if i may be permitted, the problem is that the "honest" knife companies are doing business with theese horribles Chineses!

I was wondering if this was a fake the Chinese seller was the first red flag and the cheap price it was too good to be true. The little voice in my head said to pass.

OMG, that TI-Millie....they fixed the belly that look fake....now it's even harder to tell. But I've handle so many Spyderco, I can tell when it's in my hands.....but pictures looks damn scary real.

Watch out for fake Southards, I wouldn't be surprised if unscrupulous sellers tried to sneak some of them into the secondary market. I've been buying up a small collection of real Southards to have pimped, and since the fakes are out there I wanted to make sure I didn't stumble into one buying used, so I got a fake to compare.

It's pretty obvious if you have a real one to compare it to, but the $80 fake with CF scales are close enough that it's possible some could be fooled.

So the fake ones only have CF scales and people are selling as custom pimped southards? Do you have comparison pics of a real one and the fake you got?

Please post a video/photos to show the things to look for, besides the carbon fiber scale obviously

I have a few quick and dirty photos I snapped yesterday, if I get time I'll shoot some proper photos with good light of a comparison.

The copy is very similar, in terms of dimensions, but there are some obvious dead giveaways. The real thing has a stone washed blade and stone washed finish of some sort on the frame as well, the clone does not, for example. Also, the edges of the blade spine and flipper are rounded, as are many other very small details better in the real thing. The blade tang ramp is much steeper on the clone, and the lock was initially sticky. The blade was also slightly off center on the counterfeit, and it doesn't feel as smooth when flipping or closing it (though it does flip very well). The font used on the counterfeit for SPYDERCO and CTS-204P is also thinner-stroked than the bold-looking real thing.

That said, it comes with very authentic looking box and paperwork:

Here is the clone with two real Southards. Top is my pimped, slimmed down LSCF original first Southard. Middle is the copy. Bottom is a stock Southard with a second gen shorter STR clip:

Here are a couple of side by sides (copy is the middle knife):

Here you can see the difference in color and finish to the titanium frame (copy is the middle knife):

The bearings ride in metal rings, and the scale side of the frame is drilled out, much like the real thing:

I was offered a really good deal on a used Southard (which turned out to just be a really good deal, incidentally) and that set me to thinking about how close these really were. Now that I've seen the fake, I'd know it in a instant if I ran across one again.

I wanted to get the word out, though, in case anyone ran into one in the secondary market. I've seen examples of that with the Chinese PM2s being sold as real to folks in used sales.

Also keep in mind that the clones are now available with colored G 10 scales.
