Spyderco Fixed Blades - Opinions?

I apologize if this has been said before, as I haven't had the time to read all tehse posts, but Sal, you GOTTA make a fixed bladed version of the full size Wegner! It's one of the most useful blade designs around. make it with full palm-filling canvas micart scales and a bit thicker blade in, say, 440V or BG-42. Take a look at the TOPS interceptor #331 for something similar to what I'm talking about. http://www.tactical-ops.com/knives/interceptor/331.htm

Of course, if you're soliciting for designs, I put together a LARGE hunter-style that I'm having a custom maker do for me in D-2. it looks sort of like a cross between a Busse Battle Misstress (what hunter doesn't), a Lile Deathwind, and an M1 bayonet. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.

But seriously, a fixed blade version of the full size Wegner complete with a kydex sheath is a must have.

Gr8 idea - and a sure winner for Sal end co.

My favorite would be a urban/fighter/utility (what ever that means...)

I like the idea of a knife that looks very UN-intimidating - and still enables one to use it as a fighting knife - many Japanese kitchen knives answer that criteria.

Kydex multi carry system.

lightweight 4-5 inch blade.

BG-42, CPM-3, 420V.

Or - ATS-34, or 154 - if the price of the earlier fancy steels will cause the knife to be allot higher then the 100$ limit that seems to be forming here.

I, for one, would pay 160 $ for it - if it will fit my needs and liking.

Very nice..What handle material is that..love the color and pattern

Sal- you can't go wrong with a classic American knife. A 5"-7" bowie

Besides the Lum puukko and a wharncliffe style portable paring knife, the world can use a factory version of the Talmadge Tactical Kitchen Knife

Sometime back, Sal asked for opinions on how to sell knives to women - and not just women who are buying them for husbands, boyfriends, fathers, brothers, or sons! One way might be "non-threatening" fixed blades. I have met a lot of women, especially my age ("49 and holding") or older, who are afraid to touch a small folder - open or closed - but who have no problem handling a fixed blade, whether it's a chef's knife or a "hunting knife" or, in yesterday's show and tell experiment, even a naked nine-inch double-edged dagger, which two different women picked up and declared "cool," while they cringed a a 2.5" folder as if I had offered to let them pet a kingsnake. Go figure.

I'm not the most conversant on the respective steels, but I know what I like regarding features. I like either the Nimravus with a smaller thumb rest or a fallkniven F1 stlye clip point. The blade should be between 4" and 5" and be no thicker than 5/32". Should have a single guard, lanyard hole, and a non-slip, solid grip. Offer a choice of sheath styles, bot make one of them adaptable to military webbing.

The drop-point drop-edge design (like the Talmadge Tactical Kitchen Knife) can be a very useful general purpose blade, though it does present problems in sheath design.

For another variation on that theme, the lower left knife in this scan started as a Bob Engnath blade blank, from a sketch posted on a knifemaer's e-mail list, where various people did their own interpretations of the design. That shape has potential, with minor modifications, as a general purpose using sort of knife.

Spyderco Fixed Blades

What sweet music to my ears!!!

I think Spyderco should strive to open up the market for Small Fixed Blades that are as easy to carry and as versatile as Folders.

Suggestions
2.25" to 3.5" blades
G-10 or Micarta Handles in any color but Black
Discrete Multicarry Sheaths (Leather, Kydex or Concealex are all fine with me)
Sheeple Friendly Designs (Think Wolf in Sheep's Clothing)

Sal,
G. Sakai had a great item in their "Game Hunter" model. I always wanted one, but was put off by the high price. The design is the Lamb/Gerber/Loveless ergonomic tool handle. If you could produce it with a molded handle it should be less expensive than the micarta slabs. I also liked the slight drop of the Sakai blade (vs. the trailing point of the Gerber Magnum). Blade length should be in 5" to 6" range.
I like kydex for the body of the scabbard (for safety); but nylon webbing for the belt loop. Webbing is more flexible than a rigid loop. You could also have a reversable/detachable belt loop for lefties.
If you can keep retail under $200.00 for a quality hunting/trail knife, I think you will have a winner.
Thanks for asking, Greg "stellite"

Great input so far. Appreciate. Especially concerning size. We are of the same opinions in much of what was suggested.

Sorry Pelle, can't think that fast. But We're taking it all in.

Stellite - that IS a beautiful knife and a good suggestion. Funny you would mention that piece as I was just playing with one yesterday.

We would like to provide excellent quality and retain the "Reliable High Performance" aspect of our products.

Here are two niches to fill:

1. tough work blade, mid-large size
2. something in a small-medium personal/utility, comparable size and function with the small BM Nimravus, the Boker Nealy, or the former REKAT neck knife line.

Note the outcry raised in the REKAT forum here when the neck knives were dropped! I think there is a growing interest in a small fixed blade multicarry option.

The TTKK looks great. I am going to bookmark that page for future reference, Just in case Spyderco does something else.

Actually I like a lot of the ideas here. The Wegner fixed blade makes me want to cry, but it may get better later.

The other idea that has crossed my mind is a slight re-design of the current Spyderco paring knife, perhaps in a Puukko style dangler sheath. To my mind the knife should be small, the materials should be premium and the cost should be what ever it takes to build it like you want it. Country of origin is really unimportant to me. I know that Japan and elsewhere are often less money for the same thing, but if you guys can make the Native LW in 440 V in Golden and sell it retail for around $50.00 I don't think you need to look too far.

Idea # 3. (you won't like it but I do

) Take the now, or soon to be discontinued Wegner Jr. Lose the hinge and re-do the handle a little.

Sheath! Concealex perhaps with a squarish plate, roughly 3"X4" to which the sheath could be attached. The whole thing could slip in the hip pocket of a pair of jeans, or an inside pocket on a lady's purse. Out of sight, but easy to find.

I honestly have no idea how my wife finds anything in hers. She will ask me to get her XX out of her purse. I have learned to either give her the whole thing and let her look, or dump it on the kitchen counter and sort through it there.

Wenger Jr Fixed Blade!!! Pant, Lust, Drool

I think that Spyderco would be better off going into a Market Niche that isn't already crowded with high quality offerings.

I have no doubt that Spyderco could compete with the Benchmade Nimravus, the Fallknivens or the Camillus Line but Spyderco has never been a "Me Too" company.

Small versatile Fixed Blades (A.K.A. Neck Knives with Multicarry Sheaths) seem to be doing very well for Custom Makers right now and there are not a lot of High Quality offerings from production companies.

I also like the idea of a nice 3" to 3.5" Puuko with modern design and materials.

I like the idea of a pocket or purse sized fixed blade. I have in mind a blade length of 3", full flat ground all the way to the spine, and thin enough as well as narrow enough in profile to slice up and core an apple without splitting it. The handle should be more straight than curved, i.e., more like a Centofante C25 than a Delica. The pukko configuration appeals to me, although I'm not sold on the pukko edge grind: I don't want the blade to get too thick too fast. The Moki Hana pictured here http://chaicutlery.com/moki/Moki-1100-1110-1120-medium.jpg is pretty close to what I have in mind.

Yeah, I know, why don't I just buy one of those?

Sal, what would you say about this design?

Hollow ground blades of VG-10, handles with Micarta scales, Kydex or Concealex multi-carry sheath.
