Spyderco for wife------what model?

So... you're saying a man wouldn't edc a Native 5 lightweight??
Bizarre...

My wife EDCs a Vis classic. My mother EDCs a Kershaw chive. My good (female) friend EDCs an ESEE 5.

All of them make fun of me for my pink knives.

Not at all. Just stating that there can be such a thing as a "woman's edc recommendation".

What gave you that idea?

Sounds like people are most pleased with the Delica and the Dragonfly. Thanks again everyone!!!

Hope all is well.

Currently assembling an EDC package for my wife. Contemplating getting her a spyderco to go with it. Would like a model where I can swap out the scales later for something nice. Welcome to suggestions for what model people would think would work.

I look forward to your comments!

I like spyderco. A lot. My old lady doesn't. At all. So I got her a pink mini grip figuring she wanted a "girly" knife. She didn't like it at all, too small and too pink. She didn't like any of the ZTs I owned, she thought they were too big and too clunky. I said for her to look around and pick one. She ended up with a blackwash 0566 and carries it everywhere. I've even tried to snag it a couple of times just to carry it. She actually gets upset. It really is a pretty impressive knife, even though it's an older model. Anyway, I wouldn't have ever guessed that she'd want an all black tactical-ish knife. She never wears black, it's always pink or white. She says the black tactical feel and look and assisted opening makes her feel a little better should she ever get attacked. She knows it's just a mental thing but she accepts it. I'd rather her feel empowered enough to fight back than the other option.

Anyway, if you buy her a knife without her input, make sure it's one you like because she may never end up carrying it.

First, thanks for staying on topic! Second, thanks for the advice. It will be her first folder. I have a couple ZTs, she just isn't too into them. Think I will stick for a Spyderco for now and if she doesn't like it then no big financial loss for the delica or dragonfly.

Would something like the mantra be out of the question? With the multiple opening methods and compact yet versatile blade design, it may be a good option. It's also not way out there with spyderhole or some design that makes the uninitiated cringe. You could also get all cheesy and acid etch her initials and yours on the blade with a heart or something.

Yes. For the particular woman who happens to be your wife, there is a difference. But I wouldn't assume every woman feels the same way based on one example.

(I'm curious what you consider your Native 5...not an EDC knife?)

My point is that I wouldn't assume a woman would want a different knife, or car, or frying pan, or phillips screwdriver, etc than a guy would.

Or a pink one just because she's a woman.

It's weird that guys assume that, and that may be a big mistake! Trust Velitrius and Feline Girl!

I never claimed that all women were like mine. I provided a data point that at least one woman does prefer smaller, "girlier" knives.

So when you say:
I never can get why dudes think a "woman's" EDC should be any different than a "man's" EDC.

I provided a reason one might look for a knife recommendation for his wife. Because some women have a preference for a "knife for a woman". In the case of my fiancé she likes smaller colorful knives.

I also carried my Native over the weekend. I love it. She wants it but I won't let her have it :)

*Some* women might prefer a lightweight, smaller, or pink knife but not all! It depends on the size of the woman, her occupation, level of girliness, and interests. My EDC is no different than a man's. I'm taller than the majority of men out there and have large hands. Love my Manix 2! My wife is quite a bit shorter than I am...she's 5'8. And she is a children's therapist, so she has a professional job that entails lots of sitting and talking. Yet she loves large knives! Each woman is different. [emoji4]

Alex, my apologies if I came off a certain way! You are right each woman is different :)

I wouldn't love mine if she was like the others. I'm sure you can agree!

Kniferbro, no apologies needed here! I took zero offense to your post. I think we can all agree that more women should get into knives! I think it's awesome that the OP is planning on giving his wife a knife. Whether they're pink, sparkly, covered in unicorns, or black and tactical, it matters not. Sometimes I feel rather alone in my knife hobby because I don't know any other women who really dig knives. I hope that more of you guys can get your ladies into knives!

My fiance likes my new Native 5 light weight most out of my Spydercos because of its size. So yes a woman's EDC would be different than a man's.

She also would love the pink Native.

That may be the case for some women, but NOT me. I usually EDC a Strider SnG. I would NOT love a pink Native.
Just because YOUR fiance like a light & pink knife, do NOT class the rest of us, with her. YES, THAT irritates me.

Criminy people we all have different tastes in knives doesn't need to be a gender thing. I wouldn't want anyone to buy a knife for me, let me pick it out myself :D

Show her a bunch of them on an internet knife store.
Don't tell her you're buying it for her; just ask her what she thinks of various models. :)

Find out which ones she likes; probably the best way to go about it.

Best idea so far.
I've done something like this with my ex, a few friends and my daughters.
With such wide variety of tastes in color/style/size/maker/materials I prefer to have them choose.

The Delica/Endura is a unisex thing. Whenever someone asks me what 'good' knife to get someone, regardless of gender, I tell them to get a Delica or an Endura. They are ridiculously light, ridiculously ergonomic, ridiculously good value for cost, and they come in a wide variety of colors. I've owned a lot of knives that are better in one way or another, but I honestly am not sure I could come up with a better value than a FFG Delica/Endura. That'd cover 100% of the knife-related needs for 99% of the population and 99% of the knife-related needs for the other 1%.

My wife knows that I am into knives for many years. She had never tried to use any of my knives, but it changed recently.

Somehow, she started to pick up my small Sebenza for box cutting these days, for which she used to use scissors. I don’t know why and what part of Sebenza appealed her. I normally keep Boker Exskelibur I or PM2 on a table and Sebenza in a nearby drawer. She doesn’t give a glance at those on the table but grab Sebenza.

The funny part is, she can open it but doesn’t have enough strength to disengage the lock and close it. She then asked me if there are any other knives, of which operation is simpler and easier (she wanted a lock mechanism). I offered my recently acquired Opinel #8, thinking that the collar lock is exactly what she demanded. It turned out that she cannot rotate the collar at all! It is too tight for her fingers……

So my point is, you may want your woman to test the lock if she can use it.

I was looking at some Spyderco knives on the internet, a little blue thing caught my wife's eye... Spyderco Lava.
She loves it, before that, she carried a victorinox penknife...

The titanium Pingo is the only Spyderco my wife has ever shown any interest in.

She said, " I like this one. It's nifty. Looks like some sort of dopey whale."

I agree with her on both fronts. I like it and it does look like a dopey whale. It's also legal almost everywhere. Good since she's less apt to consider knife laws, and by less I mean there's not even the tiniest chance she'd ever even think of it, when travelling.
