Spyderco HAP40 Thread

Still using mine and getting great performance. Touched up the microbevel yesterday with a dozen passes on the SM medium stones and its back to splitting hairs. I reckon this is my favorite steel I've ever used. Here's how much I like this stuff...I've decided to forgo the Mantra and possibly even the upcoming m4 pm2 in favor of a Stretch in hap40. (A model which, until now, i've had no real interest in). LOVING THIS STEEL!!

I was never that interested in the Stretch until I got one in Superblue. It has since become one of my favorite folders--it's so great for field dressing deer I rarely take a fixed blade hunting any more?

Hey, I hear ya. I don't have much money and have to choose wisely. I just have to have some more of this steel in my lineup while its still available!

Hows it holding up in the salt water environment? Thats my only hesitation is corrosion resistance.

The problem is that nobody is really buying the super blue to carry now because of the prices. My sister bought a SB Stretch that wasn't in the condition stated. She was going to return it, but it was a shame because although cosmetically it had been butchered, functionally it was fine. So my idea was to ask the seller to give a healthy partial refund, she could carry it and avoid the hassle of the return, and I would trade her the pristine one she wanted for her (now complete?) super blue collection.

So I'll do with the HAP40 like I should've done with the super blue: buy two or three of the Stretch! The HAP40 Dragonfly is going to be awesome sauce too.

I don't bring this one anywhere near the ocean. (Well, I live 100 yards from the ocean so I guess it depends on the definition of "near". ;)) I carried it one day last week inside my waistband while working outside and just that was enough to cause some light corrosion. So far, I would rate it something like m4 in corrosion resistance...maybe not even quite that good but I don't want to say that until I've given it some more use. Definitely not for the kayak though, that's for sure.

I gave mine a Ferric Chloride dip when I first received it, it only became a light gray and took some time to form indicating a fairly rust resistant steel. I'm not near salt water but we have enough salt on the roads here to make up for it, I have had no signs of rust and the forced patina I applied is actually wearing off with use. Knives that get used and are kept dry usually don't rust.

Here's a little hap40 update. I had a squeaky bedliner on my truck so I cut up a cheap yoga mat into small strips to insulate between the bed and liner. When I got home I checked the edge and it was still face shaving sharp but since I'm an edge geek I went ahead and gave it a few passes on the sharpmaker. 8-10 passes at 40 degrees with the flats of the medium stones and it was whittling hair. No strop, no fine stones, just a few light passes on the mediums. Best steel EVER! :D

So happy I managed to get hold of one! :)

Haven't used it much yet but initial impressions is that it's got one of the best factoryedges I encountered.

i have not used my Endura yet--Can't decide whether to keep it or pass it on, and get a Stretch, or if they deliver any more, a Delica.

WOW, Sal paying you to come on here and post this stuff? :)

Haha, no but what a great idea!! :p I say stuff about other popular steels that he probably wishes I didn't. Everybody has their favorites...this one is mine!

Just messing with ya, I always read your posts as you actually use this stuff in the real world and if you say this is a good steel then I am inclined to listen and take heed!

IM still on the fence on a stretch though, to many other knifes coming out I have to have. After yrs of using spyderco S30v, I am however finding that I like a steel that is easier to sharpen and will hold a reasonable edge on the stuff I do.

I find the S30v to be good, but after seeing that hair when the HAP hit it after a few passes on the mediums,:eek:, that seems to be what I am looking for.

I am a well documented lover of s30v and cpm154. Well balanced properties and some of my favorite stainless steels. FWIW, s30v will whittle hair off the medium stones too but it takes a bit more effort to get it there.

Yeah, 30 takes some time to get where I like it but that HAP seems to get there much quicker, which can only be a good thing. Keep us up to date on your uses with the HAP and how its holding up.
