Spyderco HAP40 Thread

Do you guys think that these knives are going to be heavily sought after later on? I've got an Endura and a stretch so far, I'm debating on whether to track them all down for my collection.

My thoughts are they will. I have an Endura, a Stretch and two Delica's. All are NIB, may start to use one of the Delica's.

I've been trying to find a delica hap40 in the $100 range but they're long gone. Bento box shop has them for $150, I don't see it being worth 3x the price of vg10. The hap40 is nice but my hap40df2 didn't really blow me away compared to the vg10 delica I gave away as far as edge holding anyway. Others will disagree probably but maybe the hap40 is a little over rated IMHO, not that it's bad.

I know I found the release dates, for the Manbug and ladybug, on one of the knife site's.
I'll be damned if I can find it again tho..
Anyone have that info?
Just the expected month, is all in looking for.

Edit:.. It dawned on me...

Ladybug, March/April
Manbug, April/May

That's good news and my credit cards going to be happy we are into the less expensive ones.

I will post a pic of this later, but man, the SUS410 on these knives is quite soft. I typically clean really hard to remove gunk off of my knives using Bar Keeper's Friend and a soft bristle brush. It gets them clean and leaves almost no scratches.

I used some on my HAP40 Dragonfly the other night and it scratched the SUS410 part like crazy! It doesn't bother me much since I bought this knife to use, but thought I might mention it for some of you who like to keep your blades pristine and scratch free.

Yeah, it's commonly known that the outer laminate steel always scratches easily.
Doesn't bother me either. Can be re-polished if desired.

I had read that and experienced scratching on my Delica after cutting cardboard. However I was surprised that the abrasives in Bar Keeper's Friend were enough to scratch it so significantly.

Liked my Endura so much that I thougt it needed a baby brother...

Could have been avoided with solid HAP 40! Laminate sucks. No way to say it doesn't. I kind of understood on Super Blue since the pivots would likely rust, but HAP being relatively stainless make the laminate that much more unloveable. When they run some solid slab HAP 40, I am down

Agreed!!! Lol.. Unless you missed one, then it costs even more! :/

as for the SUS, scratching..
Mine got a scratch, from wiping finger prints off of it, when it was new..
It's a user, that scratch is gone now. Covered by others! Lol..

Character!

That was my feeling for awhile but I've kind of come to appreciate the laminates. I appreciate the stainless steel in the pivot area here in the tropics. I like some of the knives in solid steel too. I hope they keep offering both.

Just ordered two HAP40 Dragonflys' Should be arriving shortly. My first "sprints".

Agree... The laminates might scratch easily, but they do protect against rust. If I compare my solid Superblue Caly 3 with the laminated Superblue Stretch, I can tell you that I treat the Stretch like a stainless blade. That is, it sees almost no maintenance except the quick wash and casual dry on my pants, and sharpening.

The Caly on the other hand needs constant attention and oiling or the pivot will show rust. If I do not dry it extremely well after a careful rinse, I would see rust the next time (and I make a point to not get water in the pivot, but moisture sometimes still gets in there).

The Stretch is bomb proof by comparison.

Some of my M4 blades are also prone to lock in moisture in the pivot, like the Military. M4 might be pretty stain resistant as long as it is dry, but add water and that changes suddenly. I appreciate the cladding on HAP40.

To be honest, I think I'm going to pass on the 52100 Military for this reason.

I've heard that in the larger Japanese kitchen knives clad blades have a different feel when slicing, which some don't appreciate.

While I like the idea of a non-clad blade, even this time of year, it wouldn't be a frequent carrier because if I'm sweating I often find moisture all over my blade. I've even had S35VN try to rust on me in the pivot area after a very hot day, but caught it quickly and wiped it off.

Well, I did some more grinding on the spine of my stretch yesterday. I ground the hump down flat as soon as I got it and ended up with this.

It was perfectly functional but I never really liked the way the tip looked so I decided to smooth the angle out and blend it into the curve. This is what I ended up with. Excuse the scratches...I did some heavy corrosion resistance testing in my kayak and had to clean the rust off with some abrasive. Used heavier stuff than I would have liked but whatever. I'll polish it out one day...maybe.
