Spyderco is dead in Canada

Will they meet you at the knife store to OK what you can buy?

Do the police in TO all have the same size palms?

Nope and nope.

It’s not even an actual law. I think they saw it on a tv show once or something.

D Dry-cell you are correct! Never tell the canadian cops your knife is a weapon. If they stop you and ask “do you have any weapons on you?” The answer is “No.” If they will search you they will ask “do you have anything sharp that is going to cut or prick me?” this is when you say, “I have my pocket knife in such and such pocket.”

They will usually now say, “why did you tell me you didn’t have any weapons on you?” To which the answer is, “its not a weapon and I don’t carry it as such. I like to eat apples for a healthy snack but have sensitive teeth so I use it to cut them.”

That usually seems to work pretty well.

I wonder what the currency exchange rate was at that particular time in 2014 compared to today? That alone could explain some of the cost difference.

Spyderco raised prices early this year, changed MAP and the Canadian $$$ is currently crappy. Nothing to do with CBSA.

Couple of recent examples... I bought a Native 5 Serrated last year for exactly $89.99CAD. Same knife at the same Vancouver, British Columbia retailer is currently $139.71CAD. Not as big an increase on the Orange FRN Endura I bought on Dec 26 last year for $81.99CAD. Now ONLY $115.61CAD.

Prices go up (especially in 4 years!) and our dollar tanking doesn’t help.

  1. I've read about the MAP raise, it kinda goes over my head since I don't have a degree in Marketing.
  2. I'm not sure what our dollar was worth back then vs now, but at that price it's not worth buying, when there are better options available. If your willing to pay extra you can get a whole lot better. These days I much rather have 440C, VG-10, 154CM, or S30V, vs 8cr13Mov.

I think they raised the prices so they wouldn't all of a sudden sell out all their inventory in a buying frenzy, or some such thing. Prices at Warriors and Wonders went way up.

" Law Enforcement officers: they have power that the ordinary citizen does not, and that can be a bad thing in the wrong hands"

It always is

Where can Spyderco sell its full catalog (minus autos) anymore? Western nations are controlled by progressive banking cabals that want an unarmed yet violent society, but are there places they sell outside that? Do they sell in japan or is it G. Sakai only? China sell their chinese knives? The Jot Singh for sale in India :^)

We have House of Knives in Canada, they have a good selection, but prices are highway robbery. I've never bought from them before.

We have Warriors and Wonders, SRKnives, MRknife, and a couple other places that sell some. Who knows for how long?

Setup manufacturing on a small scale in Canada for the Canadian Market (and even abroad, why not) for a couple choice models. = Importation problem solved.

Hardware can be sent up. I'd assume just blades and scales/liners would need to be made. It's doable.

I'll quit my boring job and get started on a batch of PM2's ASAP!

CBSA can eat it...

Set it up in Windsor, Ontario.
Seriously! We have a skilled work force, and plenty of people looking for jobs.
Every job I applied for in the last while ended up have at least 300 resumes submitted for each position available.

As a Canadian knife knut, nothing would be cooler and make me prouder than to see ______, Canada, Earth proudly displayed on the blade of a knife from a major established knife manufacturer! I'm in serious doubt that this is anywhere close to being a reality, but a cool idea nonetheless!

Hi MT,

Interesting concept, but very difficult in reality. Gail and I thought to do that in the UK many years ago and after multiple trips to Sheffield, we decided that it was not possible or practical. The equipment we use is sophisticated, expensive and requires much training to get the results we are getting.

Sal how about you just send Blade HQ a few more Rex45 PM2s and I'll do a test import. See if we're all good again.

But we are the machining capital of Canada here in Windsor. :)
Setting up is always expensive and complicated to be sure, but with the pool of machinists, mouldmakers, and tool & die makers here, we definitely have people who can operate complex machinery.

No matter how good folks are at running machines they'd still be behind the curve when it came to making knives and it would take years before they got ahead of it.

To make something like that work they'd need to partner with an existing maker and have them build the blades.

That would sort out the supply chain hiccup but it would make the Spyderca knives a lot more expensive than their brethren. There are makers in Canada but the only really high volume/quality one would be Grohmann. There are other like Grismo or North Arms but they'd have to sacrifice their own production for this so that's usually a deal breaker. I don't know if Grohmann runs the machines 24-7 so it might be a deal breaker for them too.
