Spyderco knives are really ugly

If this subject has been beaten to death, why not, if it bothers you, just ignore the thread and move on to the next?

Besides, times change, opinions change, knives change... It's nice to hear new thoughts on old subjects, IMO

On subject, I think Spyderco's are fugly, but I do own the Manix 2, which I love :D

like my father always told me ones persons trash is another persons treasure....to me the spyderco Paramilllie 2 is one of my favorite blades....and get this not alot of companies hook you up with multiple choices of steels...thanks SAL for that!!!!

Spyderco knives strike me as really ugly. That big ol' thumbhole making the blade look like the head of a duck or something. The blades look totally out of sync with their handles. And the handles, by and large, are ugly, too.

Again, not trying to start a flamewar. I'm genuinely interested in why such an ugly duckling has such appeal.

No worries... Been lurking off an on for years, but yeah, I'll go back to reading more and posting less...

And I can't afford a Sebenza either- but I didn't realize that owning one was a prerequisite to post an opinion on it's appearance. Heck- my edc is a trusty 8 or so year old m16-04, fwiw.

First off, please let me welcome you both to BladeForums. Your opinions are valid and thanks for sharing them. I don’t think that your posts are meant to be inflammatory or insulting to any who choose to buy the Spyderco brand. In fact, I believe that your views are common to those who are actually curious about the product and need only to overcome one last hurdle before trying one for themselves. After all, you must admit that there is *something* about Spyderco that has drawn your attention in the first place.

There aren’t many reasons not to at least try a Spyderco. They represent enormous value by combining high-quality materials, amazing ergonomics, excellent fit & finish and consistent regard for quality control. The knives are comfortable to use/carry and perform extraordinarily well. Top that off with a fantastic warranty and great customer service. I promise that once you use them, you’ll see them in a new light and be able to better appreciate why they look the way they do. If you like knives, you can get by without ever owning a Spydie, but if you love knives, you will get a Spyderco eventually.

Personally, I have more Spydercos in my collection than any other brand, so yes I may be biased, but maybe I’ve helped convince you to try a Spyderco one day. Maybe you still won’t like them. At the very least, you should be able to walk away with the opinion that the Spyderco fanboys aren’t a bunch of douche-bags.

I just got my first one a Caly 3 in carbon fiber with ZDP 189, I bought it off of another member for one hell of deal, He wanted to get me addicted to them. I have now just bought a delica 4, only a few days later off of another member in Grey FFG VG-10. I definitely see a lot more in my future. I was a little skeptical of how they look, but they do function very well. I do think that the Caly, Military, Manix, and Paramilitary are some of the best looking knives out threre. I got the Caly3 and it was the sharpest knife out of the box that I have ever bought and I own 30+ knives and have owned many more. I think that for the price they are just about the best quality that you can get, I am sure that there are others out there, but I have not been introduced to them yet. But like my dad always said "opinions are like a$%holes, everyone has one, and they all stink" ;)

hey man i suggest you definately try one out, their slogan is form before function and thats exactly what spyderco's all about, i guarentee you if you pick one up youll fall in love with maybe not the looks but the functionality, fit and finish, and quality. i personally think the spyderco millie is the sexiest damn knife around, just my opinion.

I used to think the same way until I really got into knives. Spydercos are ugly but they perform flawlessly and are so comfortable to use/hold/...and the mix of steels that they use is sweet for experimenting. Love S90V

Agreed

Spyderco brings more great steels to market than any other knife company I can think of "and" properly heat treats them. You also get more product for your $$$ than most companies. I think some of their knives are primarily designed to be pleasing to the hand over the eye. But they do have some great looking knives and there are enough designs that I would think everyone could find one that appeals to them visually-though function is usually without question.

This is the hardest spyderco knife to open. But other than that, how is it ugly?

Beauty is very subjective: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Think "Shallow Hall."
Before I ever owned a Spyderco, I thought that they looked awkward and funny. I used one for awhile, and they now look very pretty.
I thought that the Walker liner lock looked funny. I got one, it looked much better, and now I have two....
Very pretty knives.

You sound like I did when I first began collecting knives. I remember saying things like, "Wow, those things are ugly" and "I'll never buy one of those" [referring to Spyderco knives] ... Now, they are my favorite knife manufacturer.

It usually goes in stages:

1: Your first thoughts go something like, "Thats an ugly knife" and "I don't know why someone would buy one"
2: You either watch/read reviews of other blade guys that you respect or have a friend that has one and praises the brand
3: You find a deal on a used Spyderco or buy one of the Tenacious line knives and decide to try them for yourself
4: You find yourself using that knife much more than other knives in your collection
5: You buy another one
6: You buy more than one at a time
7: You laugh at yourself while recalling the days you referred to Spyderco as "ugly knives"

I have always liked the looks of Spydies. I don't know why, but something about them attracts me like moths to a flame. Sure, I'll buy other brands if I find something in them that I like at a good price, but I mainly buy Spydies.

When I first saw the Spyderco knives I didn't particularly care for the flow of the lines and the aesthetics, but intrigued by all the knife nuts who loved them. Years later, I saw the Sage I. It looked pretty good. Got a little birthday money and bought a Sage I and a Tenacious. Then I began to understand why those guys liked them so much.

My knife budget is small, but I have added a G10 Dragonfly and a couple of Bugs. The Sage and Dragon fly get EDC'd probably 80-90% of the time. One of the Bugs is attached to my cell phone.

When budget permits, I'm thinking of getting a carbon fiber Lum.

Most knives are seductively lovely. Not these babies.

Not trying to start a flamewar about this. I recognize that the design must appeal to a lot of you, because you buy boatloads of them and proudly display photos here in the forums.

So tell me why you DON'T think they're ugly. Or maybe you DO think they're ugly, but you like them for that reason. I'd be interested in hearing.

Hello Sharpenit ,
Not all Spyderco knives are ugly . My black pearl handled Micro Dyad , and jigged bone Kopa , in my eyes are very handsome knives.

I don't know much about the finer points of aesthetical inquiry, but I do know that, in my mind at least, this Zowada is beautiful knife in both form and function.

For me I'm still waiting for my first Spyderco because I'm extremely picky , Would love to have a Military but I want the black blade that says Military in plain edge which is hard to find and then I want a Spyderco Berong just because it strikes me as gorgeous and elegant . Just about any other Spyderco I just can't get into and as for CR knives they look like something a kid in Taiwan made for 2 bucks. I guess it really is all subjective.
