Spyderco knives are really ugly

Myowngod:

My bad. I'm relatively new to the forum, so unfamiliar with its ways and its history. In the future, I will do a search before I post.

So, is there a way to kill a thread?

Thanx.

Welcome to bladeforums, interesting entrance you made here. Do yourself and the rest of the community a favor and read the rules and the FAQ sections. Stickies at the top of subforums should also not be ignored. They are there to provide some help.

I'm a not a fan either...but then again I'm really picky about what I think looks good. I mean, of most knife manufacturers, there's only like one or two models that I'd consider buying... There's function and form - and this nirvana like location where function and form intersect. While the spyderco knives may function extremely well, imo, they miss on the form and I'd never buy one (at least not any that I've seen).

To my eye this is about the most beautiful folder I've ever seen
and this is about as butt *** fugly as a knife can get
I mean seriously- what were they thinking? How are you expected to clean that if you used that knife to cut anything messy?

Anyway- just my $0.02.

Welcome to the forums newguy #2. Have you ever considered that not everyone can afford a Sebenza there newguy? Or that there are different models available aside from the one you chose to post?
Read more post less. That is sage advice as you do not want to go around stomping around as the NG in a place you are unfamilar with. Much better to walk softly. Just some advice, take it for whatever it's worth to you.

I hated them too. Then I tried one. Now they are almost the only folder I will buy. I agree with the above, a manix 2, paramilitary 2 or the regular military. Try any one of these and you will be hooked.

The looks of a knife are not near as important as the function.

I would rather be the knife in your pocket because it works, than the knife on the shelf because it looks good. ( that is a (sort of) quote from Sal Glesser)

Spydercos have a place in my heart.

Well, BM, you picked the ugliest Spydie ever made. But thats not representative of the Spydie lineup. Spyderco is easily my favorite brand, because of the way they look, function, feel and so forth. And the fact that Mr. Sal is right here and is one of the nicest people on Bladeforums.

Instead of that pic you posted, I think here are a couple of more representative models which looks quite nice:

One more comment. As a newer Spyderco guy I think some of the models are not the hottest looking, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as the saying goes.
Some may think my blade is ugly, but to me it is one hot looking, true work of art. The Millie is likely to be my next one.

Function > Form

To some people using the knife is more important than looking at it. some models are pretty. Looks are subjective. Opinions are subjective. High function is beautiful to some. etc...

/Thread.
I could not agree more. I don't like the thumbhole either, but Spyderco's are supremely functional and effective folding knives (even in spite of the hole ;)). I'd like them even more with a thumbstud, but the few that I own (12, including a few Byrds) are without exception excellent folders. And I think functionality and quality top looks any day of the week.

Mmm, Spydie on a mirror with reflected clouds..oohh yeah...:D

True, some Spydies have been spanked by the ugly stick, but like some people say(not me obviously...) the less attractive...uumm...heavier set lass's are great because they work harder, just like some of my Spydies!

This is a later version inspired by the old Spyderco Q, which had a long, illustrious life as an advertising knife. Spyderco made versions with different designs worked into the blade for different companies. This particular model is based on the spiderweb, which other companies also use as a decorative pattern -- like the Website Sebenza.

Knives with decorative holes in the blades are not ideally suited for fileting fish. But they are fine as small, unobtrusive office knives for cutting twine, opening envelopes, and prying up staples.

Ugly is what you don't like the looks of. Beautiful is what I do like the looks of. :)

As a newer Spyderco guy, you have excellent taste. I switch off between my Chinook 3 and an S30V Military.

The tang stamp that says "CPM-S90V" is all that needs to turn a butt-ugly knife into a must-have :D

Used to think spydercos were the ugliest knives ever. But they slowly grew on me and I decide I should try one. So I bought a sage. Carbon fiber handles and s30v. I would never even consider getting rid of this knife. I love the looks now and I also love how fuctional they are

Grace of form is subjective. Function is objective. Buy one and use it for awhile, then tell me its ugly :)

Ive always thought they look really cool.
I agree. To the OP. Grab a Tenacious for 35 dollars and if you dont like it resell it to me haha. Seriously though. The Tenacious had the best lockup I have had in any of my folders rock solid no play and cheaper than all my other folders except a Skyline.

just about all one handers are basically a slab of steel between 2 slabs of handle material. not pretty like traddys but the beauty is in the function.--dennis

No worries... Been lurking off an on for years, but yeah, I'll go back to reading more and posting less...

And I can't afford a Sebenza either- but I didn't realize that owning one was a prerequisite to post an opinion on it's appearance. Heck- my edc is a trusty 8 or so year old m16-04, fwiw.

i like comparing the sebenza to a spyderco Q... lol what a joke. compare it to the ti/g10 m4 military or s30v titanium framelock military.

I tend to agree that they are not that appealing to me but I do love my Gayle Bradley
