Spyderco Manix 2 and Benchmade Griptillian - Next 2 test knives

I like the Manix 2 I hope this is an anomaly and not a common issue. I just gave mine about 10 hard spine whacks and it did not give however I must admit that I did not apply nearly as much force as with the American lawman tests as I do not want to cause any play or damage to mine.

I do not have the proper safety equipment either (probably chain mail gloves or some other extremely cut resistant material) to protect my hands (tape alone is not good enough in my opinion) but they were still pretty decent hard spine wacks .

Okay I just gave it seven hard slams the blade stop is starting to show signs of wear and I could see a teeny tiny ball bearing indentation on the lock face of the blade tang visible only in direct sunlight.

It still held up and there is no play. I must point out again due to my lack of protective equipment I do not have the ability to fully grasp the handle and bear down with full force like Ankerson probably did.

I do not dare try any more since I don't want it to develop play or any other type of damage.

This may not be a Demko triad lock but I get the impression the Manix 2 is still a decent strong folder and not bad at all.

We're waiting. ;)

Waiting to hear from Zeke once he sees this thread before I do anything else. ;)

And or if Sal wants the knife if he sees this thread.

I know he will notice the video once it's up....

Thanks Ankerson. Do you think the Axis would be stronger if one would jam a piece of wood behind the axis thereby stopping the bar from sliding off the tang? Just a theory I was thinking about.

Ankerson did you have to give the Manix 2 very hard wacks or did it fail easily with light to medium slams ?

What kind of tests did you do with these knives ?

I can see spine wacking and blade impacts, but what else ? chopping, standing on it supported by the blade, etc ?

The Axis lock and the Ultra Lock (CS) won't fail period, the blade tangs will break before the locks fail. ;)

I tested a NIB Recon 1 with the Ultra Lock a few days ago to get an idea what would happen. The Ultra Lock and the Axis lock did exactly the same thing. The tip didn't break on the Recon 1 though.

Same as the American Lawman. :)

Once the videos are up you will see.

I was very fair in what I did. :D

so is the lock failure the result of caging the ball in plastic?

in your opinion.

That's likely I guess.

I would have thought the Manix 2 would have done better once I got it in hand with those nice steel liners and G10, but I was wrong....

I am very disappointed in this failure....

i think i remember some talk about how the ball lock should be caged in something other than plastic, but i think that was more for aesthetic reasons.

just speculating, but i have to think if the lock was machined from a solid piece of metal, to include the caged portion, this failure would not have happened.

That's possible. :D

Thanks for the feedback Ankerson.

No problem. :)

Once the videos are up and people can watch them you will see I didn't try and make either knife fail.

It was a fair test as in I did exactly the same things in all 3 videos.

I thought the plastic caging was simply for grip - thought it didn't even touch metal - the liners or tang.

Very surprised to see the lock fail on the Manix.. I carry an izula on days when I might need a "hard use" knife, but the manix2 was my go-to harduse folder.... Interested to see a diagnosis as to why exactly it failed...

Oh man, This is intense! I can't wait to see these videos.

Gotta wonder if Lynn Thompson and Andrew Demko ever considered licensing the Tri-Ad lock to another manufacturer, but then reconsidered when all the haters started coming out of the woodwork.

Doesn't matter to me, though. You could license someone to make a the "ultimate uber-knife" with high-end steel and more exotic handle materials all based around the Tri-Ad lock and I don't think that you would even begin to touch the value that Cold Steel already builds into their knives.

I'm gonna go play with my Recon 1 now.

Jim maybe you better stick to playing with or testing Bm's! :D Waiting for your cool vids though Jim. You were right i guess in why you don't own a certain brand you mentioned to me. ;) I told you i owned one and was leary of that pointy tip. Now i can see the proof. :(

Well, I just knew from experience they are not hard use knives like some have said they were.

They are good knives though. :)

I guess I won't be testing the Endura 4 and JD Smith...

I didn't get them for this though, they are lighter use blades.
