Spyderco Military - Best Bang for Buck knife?

It took a while for me to buy a Military, 'cos of the tip down only carry.
But when I got one I found that easily adapted to and even well suited to this particular folder. Easily carried, easy one hand open/close, hugely versatile, top notch food knife with the 4" blade, fits all sized hands, deserving of Hall Of Fame or Classic status IMO.
Still wish it had tip up, though I realize the partial liners are one reason why it isn't.

Then I found something even better - a Military in S90V :D

I don't bang bucks, or other wildlife for that matter. I find the best value to be the Manix 2 lw S110v.

I'm very comfortable with tip down on my militaries and on any knives that are around that length. I do love militaries.

Best bang for your buck? Depends on where you are in the world IMO. In the US I think so.

Locally it costs almost $400. Then not so much.

Early in my BladeForums career I replied to a thread on the millie with "meh." People didn't like it. I ended up with an infraction. End of story. I'm more cautious now.

Not true

The knife was acid etched, I purchased it that way from the exchange. Overall the knife is hard to beat for a 4" blade.

At 4.2 oz it weighs less than many knives with less blade. It's a great slicer, and that's not common in knives in this size range. Spyderco does sprints, so the Military is available in many different steels, although S30v would probably be the cheapest. Although it's an older design, I think it leads the full size production knife class in many ways.

When I seriously got into knives in 2005 there were two stalwart classic folders that I depended on for a long time: Spyderco Military and Benchmade 940. I still have those originals plus now various models of each. My Spyderco Military from 2005 was also my first super steel which in those days was S30V!

I'm confused . Are you saying I do bang bucks or contesting that my infraction started with me saying "meh" and then responding to threats of infraction with a post using the dreaded "D" word?

Back on topic. If and/or when a military 2 comes out, if it's got a 4 way clip I will buy one, though I will wait until a non-s30v version comes out. In the meantime, I have other knives that I'd take over it.

You never had an infraction just two warnings. Both for language nothing to do with a knife. Not a big deal at all, just don't want people to think that it was for your opinion on the knife.

If my recollection of the dim past holds up, when the Military first came out, Sal said it was designed partly in response to someone asking him, "if your son or daughter were going into the military, what pocket knife would you want them to have?" It was designed to work with gloves, which is why many find it excels at that; the opening hole is larger than any other Spyderco of the time to facilitate gloved use; also explains the "oversized" handle. It isn't tip-down by accident, it reduces the chance of shoving your hand onto an open blade, and if it were in a pocket tip up, putting your thumb down along the handle to get to the opening hole as you withdraw it, most likely couldn't reach the opening hole anyway, because of the length of the knife. Also, in tip-down configuration, it can be withdrawn by grabbing the top, around the pivot area, or by using the thumb and first finger to pinch the opening hole; in the latter case, with a little practice and wrist action, the knife can be opened very quickly.

A properly clipped tip up knife will not open on you. In fact, I've had several tip downs open on me and bite my leg. Never had that happen with tip up. Also, the ladies prefer tip up.

Huh?

All the fans of the military should have had that happen to them regularly if that's all there is to it. There's probably some other factor that's making a tip down knife open on you and for several times already.

Best production knife ever. Period. Which reminds me, I need to get my 3rd one after losing my last..

Keep in mind that many folders designed for the Military (the Mili, various contracted Benchmades) aren't always clipped to pants pockets like we carry them. Many times they are clipped to vests/MOLLE and so have no seam to keep the blade pushed up against. In these cases tip down would be preferable for safe carry.
