Spyderco military lock failure

Hi Sandman,

Welcome to our forum. Best to send the knife to me.

sal
Thank you for the fast response Sal. I figure I owe everyone an update. I took it into cabelas today and got a full refund no questions asked and low and behold ive had the knife for almost six months, time flies. I took the cash and went to the knife counter thinking I may want something else, had my eye on a couple of benchmades that were cool but just didn't feel that great in my hand, so I asked too see another military and the display model had a tiny bit of liner slide and blade play so I asked if he had any more I could test, he pulled out 3 more in box and all three of them were as tight as can be, no liner slide, no play, just perfect. So needless too say I just exchanged the knife for another military and arm more than happy.

Side note, I compared my knife to a bunch of fakes pictured online and did some research. My bad knife had no signs of being counterfeit but I'm no expert.

Update on this. I was fishing with a buddy yesterday and bragging about the lock up of my new knife. I proceeded to show him by doing the same thing before, wacking it on my hand and to my surprise the lock on my new knife failed just like the other one. I have not abused this knife at all, crap I've probably only used it a dozen times since I got it replaced in January. Today is a sad day, for years I've wanted this knife only to be disappointed. I took it back to cabelas and I will be spending my money with benchmade, probably will never purchase a Spyderco knife again.

So I watched your video in your first post and tried to duplicate the lock failure in the same way as you did. Smacking the spine of my open Military on the palm of my hand multiple times achieved nothing other than me giving my palm a good "ass whooping" with the spine of my knife. I am not saying that what has happened to you is somehow manipulated or rigged or that there is anything false about what you are claiming. I will however state that I form my own opinions after taking into account the opinions and experiences of others. I will definitely be sticking with Spyderco. YMMV

I feel when ever someone states "I'm keeping my money with (insert name here)" They loose some sort of creditability. Maybe you have had two Military's with lock failures. But I've owned a left handed Military for close to a decade, beat to hell until the day it was lost. And it's replacement, bought used from a member here, and neither have had any sort of failure. It's my hard use knife when my pm2 can't handle the level of manlyness needed.

Hi Sandman,

Sorry for your disappointment. We don't get many Miliie lock failures. Perhaps we'll see you again in the future.

You must be very unlucky, sorry I just don't see this happening again.

So wanted it to work out because I just always loved the looks and design behind spyderco, I at this point can't trust their liner lock knives. One day I may give the paramilitary a shot.

I cannot fathom this at all. My Millie is very nice and smacking the blade on my hand does nothing to it. I am not going to whack it on a table or something. It is pretty strong. I wonder if somehow the liner was pushed in the whacking activity?

Best of luck to you on your knife ventures. On a side note I can't wait for the 52100 Millie to come out.

I would have let the lock break in a bit I think. Could be everything's a bit new and hadn't seated yet.

High level response. Another reason Spyderco is my most owned knife brand. I have never had a lock problem with my Military. I feel like mine is a strong knife in general.
Good job, Sal.

Eerie. I bought a coffee mug from Cabelas a few months back. Been using it to drink coffee for a while now and have not abused it in any way. Unfortunately, I've recently discovered that when I hold the cup upside down, the coffee retention mechanism fails! For those who don't believe me, or suspect I may have purchased a fake mug, I've made a couple of YouTube vids recording this "coffee retention test". You can clearly see the coffee spilling out. Needless to say, I returned the mug to Cabelas and ordered a Benchmade mug.

Had the same dam thing happen to me Bryan........while holding the mug over my lap. Nasty situation bro.
I will have my dream team of lawyers contact Cabelas shortly......how can they sell such a harmful product??? Maybe the detent on the coffee retention component is too week??
And Sal......how come when I hammer my Ti Millie into a 6" x 6" beam it doesn't come out the other side?? You'll be hearing from the dream team also!!
The nerve!
Thank you
Joe

As much as I love Spydies the lock should not fail like that.

Also with a little research you can find this 'problem' has surfaced many times over the years. I personally have had two Militaries from two different B&M knife stores (one being Cabelas) that had the liner lock slip with force applied. Never tested the locks until failure though. Both examples were DLC coated, could that be a factor?

Again, I love Spyderco and will continue to spend my money with them. But just brushing an issue aside with anxious dissonance helps no one. :D

No dog in this fight because I have never owned a Spyderco, but based on Sal's respond's I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if I found one I wanted.

I am in manufacturing and I understand things happen and the manufacturer should be given a chance to address. The OP never gave them that chance. He took it back to the store, so we will never know what actually happened or why.

In business, if one thinks it through, the goal is always to have happy customers. Sometimes not always possible. We've built many Miltary's over the past 20 years and we're always improving the Walker Linerlock with little tweaks as we learn. I'm carrying a Millie today that has a number of refinements that will eventually go into production.

That's good to hear Sal! The tip of that thing wouldn't happen to be pointed up when its in your pocket would it?
