Spyderco military lock failure

Not the one that i'm packing, but the one that Eric is working on does have that feature.

Update on this. I was fishing with a buddy yesterday and bragging about the lock up of my new knife. I proceeded to show him by doing the same thing before, wacking it on my hand and to my surprise the lock on my new knife failed just like the other one. I have not abused this knife at all, crap I've probably only used it a dozen times since I got it replaced in January. Today is a sad day, for years I've wanted this knife only to be disappointed. I took it back to cabelas and I will be spending my money with benchmade, probably will never purchase a Spyderco knife again.

gosh, I knew I was wrong to just cut things with my knife. What have I been thinking all these years. Whacking stuff with the spine is what they're made for! Duh.

Just traded a couple Becker's for my three new friends.... Could not be more impressed with lock up and zero blade play on three separate locking mechanisms...

Hi Monster,

We send a great deal of focused attention to our locks. Our knives are very sharp and lock reliability is a prime requirement. I was very surprised to hear of Sandman's experience, but never had an opportunity to inspect the knives, much to my regret. We have an extensive testing lab and when a lock fails, we really like to get the part in our hands to determine the problem.

If you get a chance, check out the new lock on our Native 5 (lite wt or G-10). 2 years in refinement. Our ball locks are also fun.

That Native 5 is a tank of a knife for it's size, have 2 G10's here.

The nested liner lock on my Military has to be the most confidence inspiring liner lock I own. It's as solid on day 4000 as it was on day one.

I'll help. I bought the carbon fiber s110v Native 5, and when it arrived I noticed the upgrades to the lock. A few very quick picture emails with Charlynn, and had answers in spades!

Native 5 g-10 (collectors number) on left. Carbon fiber s110v Native 5 on the right.

Though the Native is not my favorite folder, the back/mid lock is probably my favorite lock and the new Natives have the finest example of this lock of any knife I have owned. Absolute bank vault with tolerances that must be within a millionth or two!! I love my Japanese Spydies but the evolution of the Golden backlock puts it in a whole different class IMO. I really appreciate the engineering and work that has gone into that lock and hope to see more models using it in the future.

Over the last dozen years I have bought (and still have) 6 Military Spyderco knives and I have never ever had an issue like the OP... I also have an additional 40 other Spyderco knives and at least one of those knives is in my pocket at all times, I have never once had a reason to doubt the viability of the lockup on those knives. Not saying the OP didn't have genuine issues, but something doesn't seem right about this entire situation.

You old tease ;) Could you check if one of them isn't an orange one with LC200N blade? I miss my Military when I'm sailing...

In business, if one thinks it through, the goal is always to have happy customers. Sometimes not always possible. We've built many Miltary's over the past 20 years and we're always improving the Walker Linerlock with little tweaks as we learn. I'm carrying a Millie today that has a number of refinements that will eventually go into production.

Always good to hear that. :D

Speaking of the Native 5, I am really hoping to see a back lock Native XL. The back lock is my favorite lock.

My N5's locks are absolutely spot -on. Really neat work. Then again, my Military has never suffered lock failure and my Hap40 Stretch's lock is absolutely solid, as well (not as tidy as the N5 lock, granted).

The OP had really bad luck, didn't he?

I seem to have upset some fanboys, all I was looking for when starting this thread was some honest discussion about the military lock. I appreciate the feedback and honest replies but to the person with the horrible coffee mug analogy, you are telling me that you would be happy with your military lock failing so easy? What if I was stabbing something and the lock failed, I could loose a finger and here you are teasing me for wanting a knife to perform as intended and yes you should be able to spine wack a military and it not fail and I wouldn't consider what I did a spine wack, it was more like a spine tap and I had 2 different knives do it, almost like cables in Tualatin oregon got a bad batch. Side note I have a tenacious that I just got done spine waking like a mad man and it didn't fail once. To the ones willing to have real discussion about my issue I had, thank you. And Sal both knives were bought and returned to cabelas in Tualatin oregon there may be a way for you to locate the knives with that information.

You had some strange bad luck. Having one Military with a bad lock is rare enough! Did you anger a lesser demon somehow??

My Military eats hard work for breakfast and has never failed!
