Spyderco "mislead" about price increases!!!

many years ago i bought a civilian and did a destruction test on it, i wedged it in between the slots of the concrete in my back yard and hit it sideways with a hammer, it took 8 times at full force to damage it beyond use or repair, and that's what opened my eyes to the durability of spyderco, the same knife today cost a lot more, i want to say 60, but don't quote me on that, now i do believe spydercos are getting pricy, knives like the amalgam and military are 200 a piece, but i still believe the quality justifies it, now if the quality starts slipping and the prices remain the same, or even worse get higher --- then, that's a whole new nightmare, that thankfully isn't the case as of now

Over the years, Sal have repeatedly claimed that increase in price of raw material is propelling the astronomical increases in Spyderco knives' prices, year after year...

Let's take a look at one example:

Spyderco Tenacious and Ontario Rat 1 were both released approximately 12 years ago, made with similar materials and priced at around the same price at that time around $25 dollars on Amazon

Tenacious is made in China, known for cheap labor, labor and human right abuses and corner cutting and generally lower quality knives.

Rat 1 is made in Taiwan, a democracy with much higher wages and known for much higher quality in fit and finish.

Fast forward 12 years later to today:

Rat 1 cost on Amazon = $25 to $28 depending on the day for AUS 8 model

Tenacious cost on Amazon = $51 to $58 depending on the day for 8cr13mov

Generally speaking AUS 8 is considered a better steel than 8cr13mov although performance wise they are similar.

Also worth of nothing is that for around $50 to $60, a bunch of new Chinese manufactures such as TwoSun are offering Titanium framelock with D2 steel on ball bearing.

I've edited the following to take out offensive content as pointed out by a mod regarding "fanboy".

Given the above fact, one can logically conclude that Sal repeated statement "spyderco is not charging as much as the market can bear" is untrue. Spyderco IS charging at much as the market can bear and it only has to do with profit and not "increase in material costs".

Spyderco is a company for profit, which is only normal. But for a for profit company to masquerade as an altruistic company in the interest of serving knife addicts while blaming price increases on external factors is hypocritical. While it's true Spyderco is serving knife addicts but that is also their market and that is their business where profit is derived.

Just drop the pretense, if Spyderco come out and just say yes I believe Spyderco design, innovation and brand is worth the price premium I can respect that. Or just don't say anything at all about price increases.

Respectfully!
Did not notice this post in the Spyderco sub-forum.

The owner of Spyderco does thoughtfully respond to posts in that forum, which in this world, is a rare experience that many company CEOs/leaders do not do.

Why not bring your assessment there? To the source, so to speak. Why not tag the owner, and tell him what to do with his business?

I imagine he might not have any need for your perspective, but who knows.

Carry Spyderco often had the Manix 2 LW Rex 45 today. A lot of knife for the price.

Try that Chinese D2 vs Slyderco's Rex 45 or M4 ... if it won't perform it's not a bargain at any price.

lol obviously D2 can't touch Rex45 or M4, but how much are those Rex45 and M4 again? was it $20?

I don't know about that, the President of the United State seems to respond to individuals regularly. If such a powerful and busy man can find the time to do that I don't see why it would be a rarity in this country in the age of internet, social media. I seem to recall in the news quiet frequently companies responding to various controversies that goes viral on the net these days thank you very much.

and the associated email account i had when I setup the account mysterious changed to scrambles too huh?
Or you entered it wrong. Or changed it while drunk. Or made the whole thing up. All of which are vastly more likely possibilities. Heck, I'm sort of delighted that you brought the whole situation up again, because it shows anyone that reads this thread that you have zero credibility.

So a mod here decided to mess with your BF password and also has the hacking ability to scramble your email account so you can't get back into it to reset your bladeforums password.

Pray tell, if they don't like you enough to go through all that, why the heck would they let you back on to scream about this conspiratorial meddling when they could have straight up just banned you from the start? Which would have been much easier I imagine.

Doesn't really pass the smell test, mate.

Lol I don't want anyone to go off on anyone's credibility. Please look at facts! How much was Rat 1 & Tenacious 12 years ago and how much is it today? That's a fact dude.

What does this smell test have anything to do with prices of two knives over 12 years, mate?

You buy 10 of those $20.00 garbage Ganzo knives I'll still be way ahead and still using my same Manix 2.

Ahhh I see, interesting logic, while true I can also say.... if you dropped your rex45 and I dropped my D2, I still have 9 D2s left...

Nothing. I thought it was quite clear that my post was talking about something else that was brought up in this thread.

But post #8 answered your query of the discrepancy of price quite succinctly. Any thoughts on that one?

Rats are made in Taiwan, a democratic nation. Far cry from communist China.

Okay, where's your documentation?

Go look through my past posts, seems like you already did a bit, it's all there.

I was an original member of this forum, almost a decade earlier than the "senior" guys on here today, am I bitter? Absolutely! Did I speculate theories as to how it occurred? You bet. Does it have anything to do with this post? Not at all.

My point exactly, it's better quality made at more reputable factory by higher paid workers. Yet it's half the price of the Tenacious made in communist China. Hello? what's missing here

I meant your documentation of prices, not the documentation of your extremely obvious agenda. Show us the respective prices of the two knives in 2008.

I was not referring to Donald Trumps twitter feed, which receives hundreds of thousands of tweets a week - he's not responding to all of those, even with technology.

I was talking about taking your thoughts to the head of a business who actively responds to members of this forum. Who makes himself open to the communications of others on this site.

Companies are not an individual. Yet, you can tag the spyderco owner and ask him what you want to ask, to get a valid response not some contrived response from a public relations department or a policy formulated response from an employee.

I have a rat and tenacious. The tenacious (and Resilience, and Persistence) are much better quality imo. And it's not half the price. I paid $28 for my Rat and it was fair. I paid $42 for my Tenacious, and that was fair.
So what's missing here?

Also sweat shop labor. It's China, the government controls virtually everything, and there really aren't any labor laws. Why do you think Foxconn put nets out under the windows of the workers apartments? It wasn't because the employees were living a life of luxury...
Seems we are going in the same direction...
