Spyderco Mule Team - 2nd run

Looking at higher steel cost, plus an extra 500 degrees in austenizing and tempering temps, with longer hold times. An M4 mule wouldn't cost $40, I'd wager.

I'm in for two anyway. Maybe if the price triples it will run the speculators off. :D

After seeing what Scott had to say,

I'd vote for 8670M, a good alternative and close to L6.

I missed the first run due to procrastination:(

If I can get it here my 3 choices are
CPM M4
3V
L6

I don't have many carbon FB's so I would like to try them. Also on my list to try are 5160, BG42, Hitachi blue &white and damasteel.

Another note about L6... many (15?) years ago, there was a poll on an email list populated by many leading knifemakers, about which would be their steel of choice for their perfect using knife, and L6 won. I'm not so sure L6 would still win that poll, but just as a nod, it would be great to have an L6 mule so the team can see what the fuss is.

CPM 9V at 57rc. Just check out this graph.

As some knowledgeable person on the other Spydy forum pointed out 9V is usually used at a lower hardness than ideal for knives 52 to 54RC but it can be brought up to 56 to 58 and at that hardness with the kind of strength and especially edge retention it has it would not need to be any harder. It would certainly make for an interesting experiment which is the whole point of the Mule program.

My other choices would be Super blue and 10V.

Sal,

Here are the ones I'm most interested in for testing purposes

M2
ZDP
VG-10

Thanks

i had posted something like this over on the main forum
but i can tell you from last time i and a friend get steel it ran something like this
1084-1095 $3-$5 bucks a Lb aust. temp1500-1600F temper 300-500
cpm154 14-16$ LB aust. 1950 temper 400-1000
cpm10v 60-80$ per LB aust. 1950-2150f temper 1000

you can see how things ramp up fast

noted
the cost is as i have had to order them at different times in the last year or so things do change and im sure spyderco orders more the 1000$ in steel at a time so i dont know the cost to a dollor but this can tell you how fast it can go up

Butch, I requested a price on a piece of S125V and the price on that one piece was 153$. It wasn't a huge piece and I could have probably gotten 2 medium ( 5 to 6 inch) sized FB's out of it. A small piece for a paring knife will cost me appx. a bit over $50. I'm really tempted. I wonder who would heat treat it for me? Joe
