Spyderco Mule Team - 2nd run

I'd say:

ZDP189 and/or M2 as a not-too exotic

VG-10 or S30V to give a baseline against production knives

Someone pointed out when I suggested 420HC because I wondered how it would do with a first rate HT that we could find out from a Buck. I even realized I have a Buck Odyssey in 420HC. It is actually pretty good steel.

Really we should not be told what the steel is until after we have had it for a while.
Then it would be a more scientifically accurate test and we could record out impressions without our expectations affecting the results.

It would certianly keep the speculators away.

With 103 folks from both forums, this is what I come up with so far.

I like all the steels that where suggested, but one of the things that I like about this knife is the cost. The cost I believe is very important, it alows you to customize your own knife that has a nice blade shape without being cost prohibitive. you could make a very nice setup for $100-$150. I just bought my first spyderco and I plan to buy a mule either in the next batch or when they make a stainless model, I would prefer it if they kept it under $50-60. I personaly think that $40 is a good number, its not very expensive so it won't dent peoples pockets to much. I may stand alone, but I don't have budget that alows me to buy a new knife every day, week or month.
I have no problem dropping $40 for a fun project.

I personaly would like to see H1, as I will probably use the knife underwater and carry it on my leg where it will be exposed to sweat.

Maybe you could also put

- DuraTech 20cv
- A11
- SRS15
or ou-31 (if you can find it)

to the list

added:
Right, two from this four are already on the list :o - good job

Makes me wonder what Spyderco will use. I imagine to keep costs down they may continue with american steels. Some of the Hitachi super-steels can be pretty costly!

How about the H-1 corrosion proof metal used in the Salt knives?

I've always wanted to play with that metal.

I am more interested in trying some new and interesting steels with good geometry than I am about price. I would love to see the Mule enter production as a regular skelly knife with a decent stainless like VG-10 for a low price but considering the types of steel people want for the next knife it is doubtful it will be 40$. I would not want to go much higher than 100$
though.

yeah, I know it's not in keeping with the Mule Team intent (to try out "new" different steel types) ....but H1 Mule Teams do sound tempting

The trend looks pretty clear. M4 fully dominant, with 3V just as well established in second.

With over 100 people chiming in (by rescueseven's count for both fora) I would say that's going to approximate the 600 buyers really well.

M2, D2, and Super Blue are closer in votes, but M2 has a pretty solid lead with the way I weighted the votes. That would be a trickier call.

It's all up to Sal in the end anyway, :D.
