Spyderco Mule Team Details

Is the email address still valid?

My email bounced with an invalid recipient response.
Definitely still interested if its not too late.

Hey kneedeep, assuming you emailed Spyderco, the last few days they had a flashing sign that their email system was not functioning properly. (spyderco.com) That flashing sign isn't their ATM, but maybe it is still on the fritz.

Thanks, hopefully thats it. I posted on the other thread too, just in case.

I just sent an email im in for all of them depending on the price. Also will the price differ on a steel to steel basis.

I just sent another email and it bounced back to me, too. I saw a post from Sal earlier saying that the blades were being cut now, so hopefully it won't be too long before these knives start rolling out. I don't want to miss out on this, I hope I'm on the list. I'm still in for the series. If there's anything else I need to do, somebody please email or PM me. Thanks!

Hi Moonwislon,

I think there will probably be enough to go around. Initial response wasn't great. We won't know for sure until we actually start to ship them.

Regarding the site, we're in the middle of a few changes so there will be periodic probs.

sal

Thanks Sal,

You're the best. I have no idea why folks aren't all over this. I imagine interest will jump dramatically once pics get out and pricing is announced, though. A nice, little Spyderco fixed blade with interesting steel sounds like a pretty cool EDC if you ask me. I can't wait until the first one comes out and I can get a sheath made for it.

I had sent my email in well over a month ago. Should I have heard something by now? I hope I don't miss out. Sal- Do we have an idea of price yet?

Don't know how I missed this, but I am really interested to see the planned timeline and steel list! Just sent a test email, but looks like things are still not 100%

I'm unaware of an official timeline. As far as price schedule it will differ with the different steels. The first steel will be 52100, the next POSSIBLY CPM M4, maybe not. I believe we are going to vote for the steels to be used with production scheduled tenatively at 3 mules per year.

As far as prices being different think different costs of the steel itself, shipped from different sites, then blanked or laser cut, etc. etc. These are CPM steels, tool steels, High speed steels, bearing steels, stainless bearing, stainless corrosion resistant mold steels, etc. They are neither inexpensive, or easy to work, machine or heat treat. That's why they aren't being used in regular production knives.

There is a lot to look foreward to, and in some cases Spyderco will be breaking new ground. As always I trust Sal to keep costs down as much as possible but I still get amazed that these mules will be built at any cost. Indeed I'm really looking foreward to these mules whatever the cost will be. BTW, when was the last time anybody here had a knife containing niobium/americum in it? How much tungsten is too much? Can YOUR knife withstand boiling sulfuric acid? Gives a new meaning to "survival knife" eh? Joe

Initial response wasn't great.

I think the reason that the initial response hasn't been great to such an exceptional idea is the lack of pricing. When serious and honest people are asked to commit on something it is only reasonable that they want to know what it is they will commit on. As I have already mentioned this project sounds like a great idea but people have been asked to commit on buying a knife without any pricing! To me this is like commiting over a black box. One of the key elements of marketing is pricing. Imagine if someone was to ask you to commit on buying a car once it becomes available without letting you know its price. Would anybody do it? It doesn't matter if it will be the best car on the planet it also has to be withing consumers affordability / willingness to pay.

Actually, they haven't asked us to commit to anything yet. They just asked us to send an e-mail if we were interested, and whether we would be interested in individual pieces or the whole series.

I hope they can bring these things in for a hundred bucks per piece, since they don't have to put scales on them or make sheaths for them. If they come in over two hundred each, I may have to settle for one instead of two of each.

But of course they have:

Spyderco Mule Team Details:

Commitment:
We would like to know the depth of your interest. Would you like to sign up for the whole series or sign up for each model as they are announced? Keep in mind that signing up for models individually would create the possibility that a steel could be dropped if there was not enough participation.

Now:
What we need now is to find out how many of you are actually interested in signing up. If you are interested, please email the following to MuleTeam@spyderco.com.
  • Name & Screen Name
  • Contact Information (Address/Phone/Email)
  • Commitment (Series sign-up or Individual)
Do not include any payment information; we will let you know when to submit that and how.

As you can see it is not just about "an expression of interest" but it is about:

"Commitment (Series sign-up or Individual)"

as it is clearly stated in the above-mentioned thread. I am a fond of Spyderco (I own about two dozens of them) and, as I have already stated, I like the idea of this whole project but commiting without knowing the price is not something I agree with. If Spyderco wanted to "measure" the interest of people all they had to do was to ask for people who would be interested in buying and not who will be committing to buying. In that case the header should be "Interest" and not "Commitment".

Actually, I sent in an email over a month or two ago expressing interest and never got a reply.

Although, $100 each would be a bit high for me - I was expecting $50 or less. I have no idea what production costs are though, so perhaps I'm being unreasonable.

Sal, could you give us a rough (within $25-50) estimate on the price of the first one or two? We won't hold you to it, but I think it would help interest.

Zithras

HI Zithras,

Sorry you didn't get a reply, we are not responding much outside of this thread as there is little to say untl we get closer.

The run is still in process. We have encountered a few problems with processing the 52100 that were unexpected, but we're working out the details.

We'd like to keep it closer to $50 that to $100.

sal

Sal- Thanks for keeping the price low. It is much appreciated. It should allow some of us on limited budgets to play with some exotic steels we would not otherwise get our hands on. :D

This is the post that made me think no commitment has been asked for yet.

No actual "sign-up" yet, we were just seeking to know if there was interest.

We'll begin cutting in a week or so. When we get closer to knowing the cost, we'll let you know a price and do a "sign-up".

sal

I could be wrong, of course ;)

Ah no worries - thanks for clarifying though - I was wondering what was going on.

We'd like to keep it closer to $50 that to $100.

Yay! Thanks for the rough estimate. $50-$100 sounds reasonable. Now to see if I can scrounge up the cash as a grad student...
