Spyderco Paysan

Spyderco has taken heat for the price structure change. Looks like its just the beginning. $500+ for a spyderco. Just wow.

Having the handle be integral is not worth another $300+ dollars to me. I love the looks of it and will probably lust over it, but my money will probably be spent on other knives.

My excitement for this knife has grown over the last few weeks waiting for its release. I thought/hoped it would come in priced under the Nirvana because I understood the continual engraving around the Nirvana was time consuming and expensive.
While I really do like this knife, nearly as much as my Nirvana, I can not do it. All we can do is wait and see what sales are like. As it stands not I won't be buying.

I think this is just a clever ploy to make the mid priced Spydercos seem reasonably priced.

I wholeheartedly agree and said as much on the thread in the other forum. On BHQ it’s listed right next to the upcoming Smock. It makes $160 look like a bargain...it kinda covers-up increases in price and MAP through the rest of the line.

The pricing on this knife really confuses my I think it is the single piece handle construction. But otherwise this is just a titanium handled s90v frame lock knife made in Taiwan. The made in Taiwan for most other makers would mean it is to be a budget item.

Taiwan made was "budget" ages ago. Currently, the knives made in Taiwan are high quality. That is... if you request quality (and that's certainly what Spyderco does). If you request cheap stuff, they can make it too, of course. And... quality has a price. Quality made in Taiwan cannot be much cheaper than quality made in the States or Europe.

I said for most other makers I know that Spyderco Taiwan made isn't. Looking around single piece titanium frames seem to be $300+ but I would still think there is room to come down on this cost here.

No, no, I get you. I'm not interested in this knife but I have been eyeing other Spyderco knives (fixed blades) I really like but the pricing just seems ridiculous (Phil Wilson South Fork, Sprig..). From my POV. 50 $ down would make them almost irresistible. Almost...

I bought a Nirvana at original retail and carry it often, but I had to double-take at the Paysan price point. IMHO the Nirvana is a great blade but is pushing it price-wise.

That said, I have the strange ability to justify some questionable prices, so...

2018 Blade Show Imported Knife of the Year® – Spyderco Paysan

I am a huge Spyderco fan but the prices on some of their knives is a little disturbing. Why would I spend close to $600 bucks on a Paysun, (a great knife, I'm sure) when I can but a large box elder inlay Sebenza for a few bucks more...

Ladies and Gentlemen, mesdames et messieurs, this is your lucky day!! I will sell you one authentic French peasant knife, in lustrious beechwood handle and historically accurate carbon steel. Surrender yourself to the true life of an oppressed country pauper, as you cut your cheese and bread with this classic blade. Immerse yourself in that certain, je ne sais quoi, with it's unique rotating locking collar, and thin, slicey blade, perfect right in the baguettes. Buy your ticket to the true life of the poverty-stricken with this bona fide blade of a French paysan. The coup de grace? I will sell you all this for the low price of $380.

perfect right in the baguettes

That's the killer stab ! How could I resist ? That's what we were waiting for for so many generations (he, he, he...). And to end the joke, there's nothing even remotely French in this knife which is good loking, classy, well designed and functional, I won't fault Spyderco in any of these departments. Will I buy one ? Not even in my dreams because it's just not my stuff.

This. But I have that issue with ALOT of knives. Just about to pull the trigger when it hits me, if I just add a tad more I can get a much better knife. So, I end up practically getting nothing anymore. I am wildly intrigued by the Paysan, but want to see a review of one by someone first.

Personally I'd choose the Paysan over the Sebenza. So there you go. But both are more than I'll spend.
