Spyderco Swayback. Why not a wire clip?

it's just the clip visual for me. If it matched the bead blast finish of the scale and of the working sample then it would invisible.

I like the wire clips a lot myself but in this case the knife never was configured that way to start. The hourglass clip isn't a big deal.

On a more working knife like a PM2 a shiny clip when no other hardware matches isn't as much of a curtains and rug visual as this one is.

I agree, I like the visual you provided above a lot better.

I feel the wire clip lacks the durability of the standard clip. Scenarios where the clip sees side-to-side pressure can cause the wires to deform, thus ruining the clip.

I think possibly because the Swayback has a slightly rounded handle, this will increase the chances of side-to-side pressure deforming the clip.

Maybe I'm wrong.

There's titanium aftermarket solutions to the wire clip, however the selection is limited. if I'm going to be purchasing an aftermarket clip, I'd definitely prefer having the standard clip due to the abundance of aftermarket options for that style clip.

I feel that the overall "best" clip for this particular knife would probably be milled titanium.

Rounded handle, wire clip.

Good point. Maybe I'm being paranoid with it.

It only took me a couple of months to bend mine out of shape on a Lil Native while cutting heavy duty cardboard.

I assume I could just call Spyderco and get a new one. I already had one laying around from my ZDP Dragonfly which is a knife that I carry deep pocket in dress pants.

I've bent way more hourglass clips than wire clips and way worse.

That's good to know.

Almost all hourglass clips in my carry rotation get replaced with a titanium deep carry clip.

Also I think many people (me included) are going to carry that knife in a slip-in sheath without any clip. In such a case I vastly prefere just 3 holes instead of the empty grooves after clip removal, for aesthetic purposes. Just my $0.02

I really don’t like the wire clip. I don’t like how you can rock them side to side. Also wondering, I have a slipjoint with that swayback style, backwards looking handle—what’s the swayback design for? Cutting and peeling stuff with the knife in your fingers, edge towards your thumb?

Yep. And the usual answer is "because the designer wanted it that way". Don't like it? Buy something else. Nobody is going to twist your arm and force you to spend your money on it.

Thanx Jack,

As Jack mentioned, when we do collaboration designs, the designer feels that they are artists and creators and they are quite right. We try our best to replicate the designers thoughts or samples out of respect for their skill. If the knife does well, then the mix was a good one, if the knife doesn't do well, we can reflect on why and those changes could be in a future model. Eric and I are very critical of each others design, but that's our style of development.

Piter will probably read this thread and let the designer know your thoughts.

The wireclip looks good, is very low profile and the deep carry ones are even more low profile!

But what about the retention? IMO that is a really weak spot for this clip, it's basically just a hanger.

Another thing that has been eating at me lately is the price/quality. I don't mind spending high dollars for good things. I own both Techno versions and several other high end production knives. Currently, I pocket the Sinkevich ZT 0470. It's my 2nd ZT and in my opinion, the fit, finish and detailing of the ZT knives is superior to any of my frame lock Ti Spydercos. Add in the fact that the MSRP for ZT 0470 is $330 compared to the Swayback at $390?

I've been excitedly waiting for this knife to arrive but looking at it now I'm reluctant to pull the trigger.

I have to say that I'm drawn to this knife... I keep revisiting it, and now I'm clip shopping again.

Does anyone have any experience using this clip on anything?

I strongly DISLIKE wire clips, to the point they can be a deal-breaker for me. I know that some people wish that every Spyderco model had a wire clip, but I guess I’m another one of the minority who do not.

I wish the wire clip had been retained on this one as well, in keeping with all other Slysz designs to date.

That said, all this one needs a blasted Casey Lynch clip and you're good to go. Not a deal breaker at all.
