Spyderco Swayback. Why not a wire clip?

The wireclip looks good, is very low profile and the deep carry ones are even more low profile!

But what about the retention? IMO that is a really weak spot for this clip, it's basically just a hanger.
I find the retention with the wire clip to be excellent. It has two very small contact points vs one big one like the spoon clip.

All things being equal smaller contact points equal a higher point load.

I have to say that I'm drawn to this knife... I keep revisiting it, and now I'm clip shopping again.

Does anyone have any experience using this clip on anything?

I have that clip... I dislike it, and I hate that it was so expensive. The tension is severe, this will practically rip the edge of your pocket off when you pull the knife out. You wouldn’t be able to replace a wire clip with this either, not sure if you knew.

....Also wondering, I have a slipjoint with that swayback style, backwards looking handle—what’s the swayback design for? Cutting and peeling stuff with the knife in your fingers, edge towards your thumb?

The Swayback pattern (in a traditional sense) is one of my favorites and tends to be on my person most days. It is an excellent working knife frame - one that is used on pruners, pairs quite nicely with lambsfoot/sheepfoot/wharncliffe blades, and ranges from the small to rather large in terms of size. If you look at it from a historical sense, it is a frame that has been in use since at least the mid to late 1800s.

Personally, I find it to be a very versatile frame and despite the curvature, it is comfortable in a variety of grips. The Spyderco Swayback is definitely going to be on the larger side in comparison to the ones I usually carry and with the addition of a frame lock and a pocket clip, it's going to make for an altogether different experience for me.

I’m kind of indifferent to the clip choice, but I would like it to be bead/sand blasted. Incidentally, the last clip I broke was the titanium wire clip on the Spydiechef. The RGT clip has proven to be good so far.

Cause wire clips suck. I liked it for a minute until it caught on something the least little bit and bent. Fixed it and it did it again. Has been my experience twice. Id pay extra for a non wire clip. They are cute but I have no need for them.
Lynch will clean up on people getting rid of theirs.

I guess the clip wont get changed to a wire clip at this point, but I hope the clip will have a less shiny finish when it's released.

A finish matching the blade or the scales would be nice.

The shiny clip is definitely an eye sore for such an expensive knife. I like Spyderco’s wire clip. I didn’t realize so many people don’t.

The only thing that I like about the wire clip is that the notches allow a perfectly machined, low profile Ripps Garage replacement clip. So I guess I'd prefer the swayback came with the wire clip so I could replace it with an RG clip.

I wouldn’t buy this if it had a wire clip. Different strokes.

Where are you getting yours from?
Not cash in hand ready to buy one this moment. I’ve gotten 3 CRK’s recently, but I know as soon as I’m in the position for one I’ll buy it without hesitation. If it had a wire clip, I would even consider it. That’s me though.

I’m sure some knives will eventually find themselves on the sales tread here. That’s probably where I’ll pick one up.

For those who have it in hand, how does the finish on the blade compare to the finish on screws and clip? Are they similar? Is the clip in another finish than the rest?

I’m surprised they didn’t go with a wire clip, but at the same time I’m very happy they didn’t. I much prefer the spoon clip. Wire clips (usually) dig in my hand. I can’t use my techno because of the clip. I rarely carry my Mantra or Caly3.5. Kapara is a pleasant exception. Ikuchi would be a problem if I used it for anything harder than I do. But even the ones that it doesn’t dig in my palm, they move around in use. Giving it the standard clip leaves the option for aftermarket deep carry. I plan on picking one up, when I do I’ll have to see but I’ll likely acid stonewash the stock clip and see if I like it.

I'm hopefully getting one next week, then chopping it down to a 7"OAL and redrilling/tapping for a clip I scavenged that mimics Slysz's clip on the custom Swayback. Here's a 'chop plan' I Photoshopped up:

I’m looking forward to seeing your results. This is one knife I wish they would have made smaller, IMO the swayback design doesn’t look right being so large.
