Spyderco ugly?

I have seen many people mention that they don't want spydercos because they find them ugly. What I want to know is why those people find their designs so hideous? Sure they may not be the most interesting knives in the world, but I don't find them ugly, a little bland maybe but definitely not ugly.

So, what is it that makes spyderco designs so repulsive to some?

To be there's nothing bland about them. Some people like them, some hate them. I hate most of there designs just because I do, others I do. Its just preference.

for me it was all the terrible pics on all the online knife stores that made me think spydercos were ugly and cheap looking. these online pics just dont show the high quality of spydercos. i always thought they looked terrible until i actually held on in person.

I own two of them, and I still think they are some of the ugliest knives I have ever seen. Like seriously, not gorgeous like many of the BMs. heheh.

You want to know why something that one person finds appealing can seem hideous to the next guy?

That's some meaning-of-life stuff right there.

I like the holes for ease of opening, but they are goofy-looking.

I've also had it up to here [waving arms over head] with black plastic.

This one's not bad.

I can see how some people would think the designs are ugly but I dont see how anyone could call them bland since they are very unique designs. The organic style with leaf shape blades and ergonomic handles seem to bother some people but I for one think they are gorgeous. The people who call them ugly most likely prefer more conventional aesthetics. I go both ways and think both the organic designs and conventional designs are beautiful :D.

If it's just about preferences, why don't I see Benchmade, Kershaw, or any of the other big knife brands bagged on much?

Spyders are gorgeous.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Agreed with this man

It really should not be taking a dump on the brands you may not like. In my opinion, it should be about the subtle differences that make each design unique. A wise man once said, "Not Better, Just Different". ;)

To be honest I think they are not as good looking as other knives but function trumps looks in my book.

It depends which particular model it is. The funkier designs such as the Phoenix, I don't care for at all; but models like the Sage 2, Military, or Para-Military, I love! It's all about your opinion...

My hound dog isn't very pretty....But, he sure can hunt.

If you buy a knife just to look at it. You're doing that knife injustice. If you want to collect knives. Might as well be nicer ones to look at.

Syderco knives aren't the kinds of knives you put up on as mantle piece.
Use it as it's meant to be used.

I think spyderco makes a solid knife, but I have allways disliked the look of most of them. The lines just don't flow. The handle looks like it came from one knife and the blade from another in most cases. Very asymmetrical compared to other knives. The majority of other knives (even with a variety of blade styles) seem to all follow a pleasing, sleek, or chiseled profile, where as spyderco reinvented the wheel. Nothing else really looks like a spyderco, so kudos to them. If anything I would say that spyderco's have a purpose built or even oddly tactical look. There are a few that look amazing, but for me the mojority look like a cartoon character's knife.

I agree there are some strange looking spyders, but there are also many beauties!! i own prob 30 of em! Someone tell me that a kopa isnt sexy!?

I'm a fan of Spyderco aesthetics. Just picked up a Lum Chinese Folder the other day - great knife. Love the Delica and the SpydeRench too.
