Spyderco ugly?

some people think porsches are ugly too...

lol, I don't think Porsche's are ugly, but I do think they share a very common design philosophy with Spyderco.

some would call it lazy designing and that they all basically look the same :p

You can keep those backward compliments also....(bland?)

I meant bland as in a lot of their designs are similar and not embelished. (Flat G10, not much design in the handle unlike, for example, a Benchmade rift, mostly leaf blades, ect.)

I personally like their designs, I'm just saying they aren't the most stylish blades.(Not counting the Kopa or others similar)

There's enough Spyderco designs that just about everyone should be able to find one they like. Check the catalog sometime.

I do think the Spydercos are very cool looking knives. However, a buddy of mine in the military asked me a question which I just find hilarious. He asked: "I know they're called Spyderco....so why is their logo a damned TICK?!"

;)

That's hilarious, because one of my troops said the exact same thing! Tickco just doesn't sound as good is my guess...;)

I like the holes for ease of opening, but they are goofy-looking.

I've also had it up to here [waving arms over head] with black plastic.

This one's not bad.

i love my Stretch II very much but the +$50 for a decent handle material has stopped me at one purchase. the $80 i spent on plastic handles gave me a taste for the design but for now i will stick to classier slip joints for regular carry and save the plastic for the bbq at home

I have seen many people mention that they don't want spydercos because they find them ugly. What I want to know is why those people find their designs so hideous? Sure they may not be the most interesting knives in the world, but I don't find them ugly, a little bland maybe but definitely not ugly.

So, what is it that makes spyderco designs so repulsive to some?

I would say they are anything but bland. I find the designs a little eccentric. They are always using colors and shapes and sizes that no one else is using.

I used to not like their designs... but this was when I liked black coated combo edged knives. But if you want to talk about Kershaw thats a different story. I still find most of their knives ugly.

The more I use and carry knives, the more I like Spydercos.

I like the look of Spyderco fixed blades, though I've yet to make an effort to get one.

Many of us used to think they were ugly until we bought one and realiized how functional and well built they are. I broke down and bought an FRN Dragonfly back in the late 90's just to see what all the fuss was about, the rest is history - I now own over 40 Spyderco's at last count.

Don't get me wrong, they still come out with a knife occasionally that I just can't warm up to but that doesn't happen all that often anymore. (the poliwog & captain come to mind)

This must be because Spydercos are designed to appeal to the hands, not to the eyes. That said, some of them do look good: have you seen a pearl/abalone Kiwi, for instance?

I think most are ugly. There are few that I like the looks of.
Even the Gayle Bradley which I think most love. I think it's atrocious.

I don't know how someone can question taste. I like what I like.

Well, isn't it?

Sal mentioned once that they design their knives in the dark. May be this is truth for some of them. I do not like traditional Delica or Endura, not a big fan of Milly, Para or Manix2. Still I own over 70 very attractive Spydercos, many of them drop dead gorgeous. They must have a lot of light during design stage and later. I am not any good at taking pictures, but my friend Peter is very good

After checking this thread,I think it will be difficult to argue how gorgeous these knives are.

I think it's a subconscious thing about whether one prefers an enjoyable and utilitarian hole or would rather fondle something that sticks out for accomplishing their various pleasures.

And if this post doesn't start sumpin, I just flat give up.

:D:D:D

I don't think they are ugly, but unique. The Spyderco hole has permanently ruined me on thumbstuds, I love the functionality of the hole without ripping up my pants.

I guess I will go against the grain here and say that I find most unnatractive. The big hump over the hole usually is what makes it really ugly for me. Most knives that could have beatiful curves have that big hump thrown in there and make it butt ugly. I do like some designs though, like the native (no hump) and the caly 3, the caly 3 looks good and designed very nice. I hate the way the gayle bradley looks, man that hump makes what would be a very nice looking knife look ugly as it can..... lol. (Flame Suit ON!)

I think the Spydie hole is the biggest reason Spydercos have strange or different looking designs. The deployment hole is also the reason Spydies are so easy to open and use. Gayle Bradley admitted the hole was his biggest obstacle during the design process. For any who have really carried and used a Spydie, the ease of use definitely outweighs the design philosophy.
