Spyderco vs Benchmade

Have you personally, not on YouTube, not a friend of a friend, not in a review, but you personally seen a broken torsion bar?

I, personally have assisted openers dating back to apr 02.
Use them daily, and have yet to have one fail, ever

If you have had one fail personally, I would like to hear what model, how, and when.

Personally, I've had the torsion bars break on both my Shallot and Blur (Tanto w/triple point serrations). I had them for a decent while before they broke and can't comment to others situations or experiences, but it has happened to me. I ended up replacing the torsion bar on my shallot, but decided to leave my Blur de-assisted because I actually like it better as is.

After careful consideration and the help of all of you I picked up a Spyderco PM2 today. The shop also had a large selection of BM knives but I guess I had my heart set on this Spyderco. Like many of you, ..... it won't be the last knife I buy. Thanks guys for all your insight/pro/con info.

That is a great knife and it is a gateway to a very similar, but better knife, the spyderco military...........just kidding, but not really.
Use that PM2 for 6 months and you will think it's the best (you may be right), but then handle a military and the heavenly light and music will shine upon you.
I think in order to really appreciate how great the military is, you need to try several other knives first.
However, the greatest military of them all, the knifeworks.com exclusive s90v cf/ti is on its last few remaining and it' only 199.95.

I don't think youll be disappointed but if you are give the cold steel American lawman a try. There was a thread on here months ago that had discussion between the two. Gave me interest in trying one out. Didn't pick one up yet but it's on my list after I handled it at a shop. https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/a-competitor-for-my-favorite-edc-the-pm2.1493152/

I have a Spyderco Delica 4 and a Benchmade Mini Griptillian, comparable knives from either manufacturer . I love them both and typically carry one or the other on a daily basis. Either work for most daily cutting tasks. IMO the Delica is the more serious tool and is elegantly functional while the Mini is more fun to fondle and play with. If a had to only have one, either would do just fine.

To answer your question, the only reason to choose one over the other is which one you like better. You can find negative things to say about any brand. For me knives are a hobby and with the budget I set for myself, I’m usually looking at Spyderco, Benchmade and ZT with some others thrown in on occasion. Some people are fans of a brand A and they think brand B is crap. I have no problem with that. It’s their choice. BF is a very small demographic of the number of knives Benchmade and Spyderco sell. If one company was far superior to the other, we would not have these threads asking “which do I choose”.

I have yet to have a problem with Benchmade, but I did receive a Manix 2 XL, new from one of the large retailers, that the blade was rubbing the presentation side liner.

The pm2 is my absolute favorite knife. Having said that, the benchmade mini onslaught is also my absolute favorite knife. Can’t go wrong with either, IMO the axis lock is equal to the compression lock, and both are better than any other lock.

You got a pic of the "blade play"
How about a pic of a BM period
I'd like to hear your "first hand knowledge" , if you have any.

Awww , did I hurt your feelings because I stated a known problem with many BM's? Dry your eyes and get over it. Hahaha.

A pic of blade play? How's that possible?

I've had numerous BM's (707 Sequel , 710's , HK 14220 , HK 14255 tanto to name but a few). And aside from maybe 3 or 4 , all the Axis locks had blade play. And not just after time but right from the get go.

So I sold them years ago. And I haven't bought one of those things since late 2013.

That's my "first hand knowledge" , pally.

Is old news
Necro news

Cvrobinson Cvrobinson I had a torsion bar break in my Kershaw Cryo II Tanto but beyond that failure I have other issues with Speedsafe/AO in general that make me not want them. I will say that related to the breaking of a torsion bar one of my gripes would be that once it breaks the manual action is garbage and the knives tend to lack good simple setup to convert over to manual.

I would love to de-assist my Leek and Al Mar 2 but I’m afraid that what you say and what I’ve read will be the case. I have no reason to doubt this is true.
