I just realized that I hit 500 posts here on BF, and I have never done a giveaway. So in order to give back to the makers here, who have helped soooo many newbies like myself over the years, with answering question after endless question, I am giving away 4 oversized primo stabilized blocks. (Black Ash Burl, Dyed Box Elder Burl, Walnut Burl, and Spalted Blackline Maple....All stabilized by WSSI) Ignore the shotty pic, they look better in person. Everyone is encouraged to enter this give away, but theres a few rules below.

Here's a couple simple rules.

1). Pick your favorite block from the picture and tell us what you would do with it if you won the giveaway. For example.... What kind of blade would it go on? Would this be a full tang or stick tang blade? Would you pair it with bolsters or another wood / synthetic? Doesn't have to be a blade ( I've seen some mean looking ice cream scoops..) but you get the idea. Take some time and be creative, there's no right or wrong answers....

2). Your post is your entry # (1 per person) and a random winner will be picked and announced on St. Patrick's Day. So get your post in before St. Patty's day, which is Wednesday, March 17th.

I will pay for shipping in CONUS, but in the event theres a winner outside the USA, we will make arrangements at that time.

Good luck everyone
-Larry

My favorite is the dyed box elder. It is very close to University of Ky Wildcat blue. I could use it for scales on a 2010 NCAA National Champion slipjoint.:)

Thanks for the chance Larry

I like the black ash or box elder, the blue dyed Box Elder looks really cool to me. I can see the black ash on an EDC sized fixed blade (3-4" blade), drop or clip point blade, SS bolsters, full tang, nickel pins and a lanyard hole, prolly some thumb grooving or rope filework on the spine of the blade, and a hollow grind. That Dyed box elder I can see on a folder, 3-4" blade, stilleto styled with SS bolsters and a thin wee-hawk blade. Similar idea to a Cold Steel Ti-lite, but with wooden handle slabs if that makes sense.

Good giveaway, and thanks for the chance!

I love that dyed box elder burl as well. All of them are nice but I like the blues.

It would have to go on a knife with decent sized handles to show as much of the figure as possible. I really like camp knives, 5-6" blade or so. No guard, no other material. I want the Box elder burl to be the star. It would look awesome with some nice random pattern damascus as well. Might be motivation enough to pick up a bar to work with.

Would go on a full tang, as I prefer them.

Thanks for the oppurtunity to win.

The Black Ash Burl is just beautiful, but so are all the others. The Dyed Box Elder Burl really catches my eye too, but we can only pick one so back to the Black Ash Burl.

As to what I would make, hmm I have few designs kicking around in my head. I would like to do a big mean chopper with a good meaty 18" blade on it, and I also would like to make a nice fancy bushcraft knife, in around 6" blade with a scandi grind on it and full tang out of 01, then there is a large Bowie with a hamon out of W? but I dont have the skills for that one yet.
Needless to say what ever I would make it would have a nice handle and a shiny, sharp, piece of hardened steel sticking out of it and what ever was left over I could just fondle and drool over. So how big are these blocks? :D Not that I have to worry, even with a little Irish in my I have none of the luck on these give aways. Although I did benifit nicely from Farmer Phil donating his prize to me

I love that dyed Box Elder Burl.

I'm working on a Drop Point with a Nickel Silver guard for a KITH and that would look great on it!

Thanks for the chance and congrats on 500!

I'm gonna have to say the black ash burl. I would couple it with a fast modern bowie with a looong clip. Hidden tang, with an oval guard and ferrule. Maybe even a threaded tang with end cap and pommel nut.

Thanks loads for the giveaway.

I like the spalted blackline maple. Got a Spyderco S35VN mule waiting for scales (when it warms up and I can get back out to the garage!) Black linen micarta bolster would "set off" that beautiful blackline maple.

The black ash burl and I would put it onto a forged knife similar to this one:

Thanks for the generous give away!

My favorite is the black ash burl I would make a full tang with 416 ss bolsters and silver mosiac pins in a hunter. thanks for the giveaway

all of those r beautiful but i can picture that black ash burl on a blade that ive been working on thats a drop point utility blade outa 1/8in L6 with a full tang. id make a bolster out of black g10 sanded smooth and with a copper spacer between that and the black ash...

I like the black ash burl. I think I'd do it on something like a Loveless style drop point. I think I'd like to have it paired with a brass bolster (which I have yet to do). Or do it with a brass bolster and a hidden tang, which again I have never done.

Thanks for the giveaway though

Thanks Larry
Seeing my birthday in on the 17th here goes.
I like the black ash burl. Would add it to a black paper G10 micarta bolster on a full tang hunter with S/S pins.

Ooohhh! I am working on a Persian fighter with copper guard. That dyed box elder would be perfect.

Thanks for the generous offer.

Some of these responses reming me of the Dating Game... :D
I like them all a lot! Were I to pick one, I would probably go with the black ash.. if only because I didn't have any in my stash. (Poet and I didn't even know it..) I'm thinking a hunter/utility or a skinner. Maybe a stick tang.

Don't bother with the drawing. Just send me the black ash burl for a 5'' S30V hunter/skinner with stainless bolsters and pins. Already have the steel, just waiting on the burl.

Though it's not my favorite I would love to put the black walnut burl on a sgian dubh that I've been intending on making for a while. I have some steel in the mail and am going to do it this time and I think that would look fantastic.

Thanks for the chance!

I'd love the Spalted Blackline Maple. It reminds me of a pair of slipjoints that Todd Davison made recently. I'd have to try and emulate one of those.

Thanks for the chance.

They are all very nice, but I like the Walnut burl. My next project is an 18" Bagwell-style Bowie, coffin shaped full tang handle with devil horn guard. I think this wood would be perfect. Thanks for the chance!

the dyed box elder screams book-matched scales, but i envision such a block [or part thereof] on a blade like this one:

img_0251.jpg

L-6 mill saw stock, an early attempt at a flat grind and a distal taper, slightly pitted, left slightly rough, asymetrically beveled and notched on right side, for right handed slicing, and which takes a beautiful blue patina with vinegar which would be well complemented by the dye job, and well contrasted by the figure of the block.

probably with a horn bolster, thin plate of patinated copper at both ends, stick tang much as pictured, peened on.
