St. Patty's Day Give Away

I really like the Blue dyed scale. I would use it on the sodbuster that I am working on. In my eyes, that is "Indy Colts Blue" and I know several Colts fans that would really enjoy this as a gift. And it surely wouldn't go missing being blue and all. BTW your givaway is a great gesture. I have learned so much here from peoples generosity of information. I hope I can one day help others too!

Boy that black ash is my favorite wood of all time. Coupled with some brass on a 12" forged chopper would be a keeper. Probably keep it in block form.
What an awesome St. Pat's day that would be! Thanks for the chance!

My favorite is the black ash burl. I would use it on a drop point hunter in D2 with mosaic pins and black spacers. Thanks for the opportunity.

Larry,

I like the dyed box elder.
I would use it on a full tang damascus blade that I just finished. It is a small tanto.

Thanks for the giveaway.

My favorite is the black ash burl,
to be use on a loveless style knife,
I planing to make soon.

thank you

I like that dyed box elder, It will go on my first knive that I plan on making this month in GL Drews class (if I can get in). It is going to be a Green River Bushcraft (that is what I am going to call it anyway). And I was thinking of using a blue or orange scale on it for visiablity, and thinking of doing a double layered handlewith some other wood or mircata. BTW it looks more like a Duke blue than UK :D. (remember 1992! I see a rematch happening this year).

I love that piece of walnut burl. I think it would go nicely with a simple EDC knife. Thanks a bunch for the chance!

I really like the black ash burl. I would probably use it on a medium sized bowie or a upswept hunter. hidden tang for the bowie, full tang for the upswept hunter. would look awesome with mosaic pins.

How about the black ash on somthing like this.
I got this wood from Larry by the way.

Thanks Larry.

Dyed Box Elder Burl

I would be pairing it with a full tang sweep point skinner at an OAL of about 8", its a prototype I am working on, would also pair it with a set of SS bolsters on this design, thanks for the chance.

I like the black ash burl and I see it on a birdseye damascus bowie, with hidden tang, oval guard, and fileworked ferrule. Very nice giveaway, thanks for the chance.

Good go Larry, thanks!

It has been fascinating reading what folks might do with this stuff. Here are some of my possibles. I'd pick the black ash burl for sure. I'd hope to team it up with another block or two of the same from my modest stash. For steel I'd use either 5160 or 1084.

My goal would be to forge a set of two (or three) hunters: a good size drop point (somewhat like Karl Andersen makes), a smallish skinner (after a style David Sylvester showed me how to forge) and a petite three finger bird-trout-caper size blade. They'd be hidden tang or stick tang with pommel. Hardware would be lost wax cast silicon bronze with full guards that might be textured or sculpted in some modest manner. The blades' edges would not protrude past the ricasso edge (similar to Ed Fowler's work.)

Although I reference other folks' styles here, I in no way want to imply my work would be of their caliber or stature. But hey, ya might as well have your heros right?

Thanks again for the chance...and the fun!

All the best, Phil

terrific blocks Larry! I love them all. the blue one and the black line one are unique but I'll take the first one (Black Ash Burl). I would use it for a medium sized, full tang, fixed blade similar to this one.:

the steel I used is from a forged railroad clip (60Si2Mn)

thanks for the opportunity and good luck to everybody

Larry, thank you for the offer.

My newest intrest is in push daggers with a small handle. Blocks of this size will provide enough material for a couple or three of these.

I think that the walnut or black ash would look good.

I like the black ash burl, very intense patterns. To be honest I would hope to not destroy it as I've only used wood on one knife so far.

A local ht company is owned by a knife guy. He said he would ht a batch of knives in trade for a knife. He does this for other local makers. I need something to impress this guy. I think that black ash would make for a beautiful handle on a 4" , full tang hunting knife I'm starting today.:)

I'd have to go with the spalerd black line maple on a full tang drop point with Turquoise bolsters.
Thanks for the chance.

I'll say, the black ash burl. I recently came across a 6.75" piece of twist Damascus I made eons ago and been thinking of making a folder out of it. I think that piece of black ash burl would make a good counterpoint to the twist pattern of the steel.

I just made a set of oversized cheese knives with Micarta scales (overall about 8-9" each). The Spalted Blackline Maple would look great on a similar set. If it was too small for all three, I would do one for medium (e.g. blue) cheeses.

I have to say that I am truly amazed at some of the ideas you guys have come up with. It's very interesting to read the entries on this thread, and I'm glad soo many people have offered up their ideas. Some of you even posted pictures which is really cool to see. It helps me too, because these are the woods that I like, and I use. I think its hard sometimes to look at a blade and figure out what wood goes well with it, and not be the same old thing.

Thanks for all your entries so far...........:D
