Stagalicious! Just Stag !!

Your concerns are, as I have been told, unfortuantly absolutely correct ! An Indian Doctor friend of mine, whose family have a large farm in India, tells me he has NEVER, in all the years he lived there, seen any naturally fallen antler on the forest floor - it soon gets eaten by all sorts of critters and insects! He also says that the Sambar deer were being killed in order to obtain the antler to sell (probably for a pittance - but you have to remember India is a country of either extreme wealth for a minority or extreme poverty for many).

Colin

I thought that might have been the case. It's a shame they kill the deer. Thanks for clearing this up for me

Don't draw the conclusion that all the stag used for knives came from poached deer with that little bit of information. 99.9% of the stag you have seen, or will ever see, came from shed horns.

I don't think the percentage is that high Greg but let's not go down this path and ruin a perfectly -- no great -- thread. Pretty soon we'll have to discuss if the ivory that makes up the ivory scales on our knives was taken legally/morally.

I'm enjoying this thread with lots of great pictures of great looking knives. I personally don't need to go down the path of moral methods of stag, ivory, etc. gathering. Just my .02¢ -- no offense meant to anyone.

Thanks for starting this thread Greg.

Would have loved to have just seen a photo of some stag from ya Ed.

Look at Post #14, page 1 of this thread for a couple knives I have with stag handles. I've got a couple Bulldog knives (one 1st generation and one 2nd generation) with stag handles coming and I'll post pictures of them when they get here. Wait a minute -- I've got a GEC Conductor with burnt stag handles coming (should get here tomorrow) and I'll post pictures of it too when it arrives.

If you guys are counting red stag, here's one I gifted to another forum member. Even though it's not mine anymore, it's a nice looking knife.

Thanks guy's, I do believe the vast majority of stag is from naturally shed antlers
Thanks for the replies and sorry I wasn't trying to make anyone feel bad.

Stag is some pretty amazing scale material. Tough, takes on a great patina with time, offers a firm grip and like a finger print, no two pieces are identical!

Here is one of my blade picks(not available) with a piece of stag that I thought fit the size of the pick very nicely.

Greg,

That small 4 blade stag folder is truly elegant.

The Sheepsfoot and Wharncliffe with the Clip in this small knife are excellent.

These three arrived yesterday afternoon.

Bulldog Stockman - 1st Generation; GEC Swell Center Pen Knife; Bulldog Swaybelly - 1st Generation
