Stainless steel KMG, Build

Hey!!! It would be interesting to price it out, figuring that you bought everything and the labor cost.:eek: I bet it would be over a few grand.:D

I'll point out that it is "The Machinery's Handbook". Not "Machinist's"

And "you are" is abbreviated "you're", not "your".

...I'm just saying...

:foot:

on Tuesday i will cut out the key slot using the wire EDM at work :D.

ya, i would guess it would be more then that, i dont know how much over it but my shop charges $100 and hr and i bet by the time i get it all done i will have 50 hrs or more into in pluse material and motor cost. wow thats pricey. say it did take 50 hrs to make with no dinking around plus 250 material cost (just guessing) plus motor cost 400 and then the vfd at 400 plus contact wheels at 325 for the 2 and i know theres more but lets just add that up. thats $6500.00 kinda pricy i would say.

The build continues. seams like a never ending project. I got the drive shaft turned down last night. it is 3/4" but on the pulley side its 5/8" as i needed a 2" pulley and that's hard to do with a 3/4" shaft. I did not have any 3/4" stock so i had to turn from 1.125 stock. I got both key ways cut and its ready to go. now i just need to make the bearing mount plates for the drive shaft bearings to attach to as i have ordered the 4 bolt flange bearing units ;) and thy should be showing up in the next few days.

That is looking sweet. Are you going to do the wheels out of ordinary aluminum? I think you should do them out of ironwood :D (Stainless steel might look good on this too :))

yep everything is stanless except the contact wheels which i allready so no need. plus i would think it would put a starin on the motor starting a large steel contact wheel.

ok one more part done, I did the large 5" belt drive wheel tonight. it seams like i can get one part done each night but the list still seems longer and longer avery time i look at it.

That is a serious grinder! As the humidity is getting worse in my garage, stainless looks better every day. I had to do the next best thing and paint my KMG.

What color are you going to paint it?

Its solid stainless steel, that way i don't have to paint it.

OK i just got a happy package in the mail :D. i did not think i would be able to find something like this but i did and i got them for an amazing price. and see i told you everything was going to be stainless steel, why not the bearings ;). thy are solid stainless steel, even the Zerk grease fittings are.:rolleyes::D

ok another update, got the bearing support plates done. man I'm getting close to wrapping this puppy up. here are some pictures. o and i checked the run out on the 5" drive wheel with a indicator and I'm within .0004 :D that makes me so very happy as a drive wheel that heavy could really shake things up at high speed if not centered. remember all the hardwhere is getting replaced once its done with stainless steel, nothing on this grinder is not going to be stainless :D
