Hey guys,

I just wanted to give you a heads up on someone that you should avoid doing business with. Hall Handmade knives and it's owner/knifemaker Ian Hall have a horrible business practice. I initially found Ian off of IG and after looking at his work, which is beautiful, I contacted him directly and we had a great conversation & I agreed to buy a new hunting knife for the last deer season here in Illinois. The shape, size & wood preference, including pictures of several different blocks of wood were emailed to me. The choice was made, and I sent him the $$ back in October 2016. This is where it gets interesting. I didn't get any updates, and the finished product was due to be delivered by November 15th. That day was fast approaching and I DM'd Ian, and he said that "1000%" my knife would be in my hands by that date. I left him alone to do his work. Needless to say the 15th came & went, no messages, no emails, nothing. This went on until I saw on his IG page that he was going through troubles with mail theft, his wife's work schedule, childcare issues and a sick family member. I let it go, having empathy for him, yet still wanting my knife. I finally sent him a message saying that I wanted a refund. I received a reply saying it would be mailed, and I never got a thing, except more excuses. I had finally had enough and went to my bank, as I had paid via CC, and filed a claim. I hated to do it, as Ian seemed like a generally nice guy, maybe he is and is just horrible at running a business. I got my $$ back the same day and he is now Chase' problem. I only post this because I have been DM'd by a whole slew of guys that encountered the same thing that I have, and I wanted you all to know that you won't get anything but empty promises from Ian. Good luck to you all.

Tim

i remember that fellow. he refunded the last person who posted here in that linked thread. that was in October, so i guess he never made it out of his issues. seeing how yours was in november. shame. was hoping he'd pull through. so be it.

Welcome Tim. Sucks you had to make this one your first post brother, but thank you for sharing your experience. Hopefully you'll save someone the aggravation you went through. Glad to hear you were able to get the cash back.
Did you pay in full up front?? Have you heard anything from him after you received the refund??
Joe

Well, here we go again with this guy. Sorry the op had to go through this. Never pay up front. Deposit maybe. This guy has a history of this stuff and always so many excuses. Time to stick a fork in him. do not deal with.

Sorry to hear Tim. Many of us have gone that "Hall"
Seems he has as many issues as skills still.
He is so nice easy to like too. Hope he gets turned around.

Oh god this guy again? Hall sold me a knife on the exchange, we had lots of communication until I sent him the money then he went radio silent. I never got the knife. Thank goodness for paypal G&S. Liar+scammer+thief=stay away.

With the repeated issues of people paying and not receiving knives from Ian Hall, whether it's custom orders or knives sold on the exchange, why the hell is he still a member that's allowed to sell and advertise on BF?? All it's doing is setting up future thefts and disappointments.

For clarification this is not forum member and knife maker KHall, correct?

Forums and IG cannot save you from scam artists like Ian Hall. Buyers must be willing to use Paypal goods and file claims. If deliveries are promised for dates beyond when PayPal will allow a claim, don't send any money.

I don't mean to sound callous, but everyone has to balance life's turbulence with their responsibilities. Don't let excuses (valid or not) override transaction terms.

He doesn't have a knifemaker membership. The last string of his mistakes I paid attention to he was going to quit making knives 'cause he couldn't handle it any more. He's gone from being a guy with a bad back and home problems to being a con artist. Possibly it's time to have him walk the plank.

Great you got your money back Timobrien6, I'll bet there are some that are not so fortunate. I feel sorry for his wife. Think of the cons he's running on her...

Wowsers. He pulled out all the stops in the excuses department. Usually its JUST a sick family member. Now all he needs is his very own disease and the circle will be complete.

I bought a Hall Handmade knife off the exchange a couple years back. After one fake tracking number and several emails chock full of excuses and sob stories, I finally got the knife over a month later. Ian spent more time writing about why he couldn't ship the knife than it would have taken to actually ship it. Never again. Glad you got your funds back, OP!

I think he did talk about how he hurt his toe one time. Does that qualify? LOL :D

That's right!!! He even took pictures of it and posted them up on IG.
He had a band aid on his toe......that's why it took him 2 months to ship!!
Jeeeeez!!

Pathological...

This guy has been a scammer since the beginning . He is a pathological liar . He for some reason feels the need to tell all his problems to whoever will listen and acts like he makes hundreds of knives a year and constantly shipping said knives . Ian you dont make many knives at all and you just have to accept the facts .. This game is not for you . Just go away please ,

I emailed Ian Hall about this thread.

He said I could post this if I like.

"You are welcome to post this if you like. I will not be returning to the knife community or any online community for that matter. I don't particularly care what a bunch of career GBU posters think about me at this point. The only thing that matters is closing orders, refunding customers, and taking care of my family."

I feel like this should be emphasized again. The person being discussed is not KHall of Ken Hall Knives, despite the same last name.

I got confused reading this thread at first because I am not familiar with Ian Hall, but I don't want Ken to suffer from any mistaken identity issues.
