Stay Away From Hall Handmade / Ian Hall

Appr 6 weeks ago, I agreed to purchase 18 blocks of premium handle material from him for $600. I paid him with PayPal immediately and then.........nothing but excuses.
I filed a claim with PayPal and that sent him over the edge. I did get my money back from PayPal yesterday.

Over a month and couldn't find time to just mail something for $600?....not something he had to make, but just box up and ship for $600?? Wtf:rolleyes:

Family absolutely comes first and if I had the opportunity to bring in $600 for my family for something that easy to do, I'd absolutely do it.

Exactly. Not to mention that the Post Office will actually come and pick it up, so you don't even have to leave your family to ship!

I had a very recent experience with Mr Hall.

I would urge anyone waiting for product from him to file a PayPal claim immediately.
Unfortunately, he has strung a lot of people out so long that they won't be able to recoup their funds.

Wait, are you kidding me? That right there is the nail in the coffin, period. The post office, ups or FedEx will come pick up any package from your home. There is zero excuse for not being able to pack a box of handle material. Anyone trying to defend this guy can go choke themselves. This makes me irate. You telling me that kid and wife is sleeping all day and he can't disturb them for 5 minutes to pack something up? POS

There was no handle material, that's why nothing was shipped, he just wanted the money.

It's all just bullshit at this point. He doesn't know how to speak without lying.
Reminds me of Dustin Turpin, and so many others Will Moonie, when called on their BS they either attack or go for the sympathy card. All to make the customer seem like the bad guy.
Typical.

No shit .. All our families come first . Im a contractor too Joe and thankfully i never had to go through a surgery like yours . Man that looks rough . This scammer tells some real big whoppers I mean real big . I ran into his instagram page before he had his meltdown and shut it down . The stories had me shaking my head .. I said to my friend why in the world would you reveal so much personal info ?? And number 2 is I thought you were not taking orders anymore or going dealer only and then its like .. who are you talking to anyway . I think in his mind because a few guys said nice things about his work he puts up a facade like he is someone like Walter Brend or something .

Fact is that he is a fraud . He has been called out numerous times he has tarnished his name and proven that he is just a big poser , All this talking he did was to his imaginary friends and I honestly cant stand the guy . I actually feel bad for his wife .

Just wondering, does he actually have a wife and/or kid(s)? with this lying sack who knows.

Hey Mike!! Hope you and the fam are doing well my friend!!!
You know as well as I do, back pain has nothing to do with this mess at all. He is a thief and a coward, period.
When I went into the hospital for that miserable surgery, I did not take one deposit for any projects at all. I had no clue how long I'd be out of commission.
I let all my regular customers know what was going on.
I felt it was better to lose the work rather than hang someone up.
I love how he says he's closing his FB and won't come on the forums any more because he wants to focus on family???
Please!! He doesn't want to hear what a POS he is any more.
Joe

Hey Bro, family is always great and just making knives and launching my new midtech.

There has been a backlash with preorders because of idiots like this constantly scamming people. Just really sick of scammers like this ruining it for honest makers. I actually guaranteed all who preordered a refund of their deposit if I am a day late. So guess what if I had to hold my son for two hours to get him to bed, I'll stay up anither two hours to do whatever is needed to finish this knife project..... with my bad back.....

Sounds just like the way I, and many other honest business owners, do things. The right way. The way where your word is given and you stand by it. Period.

Best of luck with the Mid Tech Mike!!

It's sad to see a skilled knife maker succumb to temptation. As a famous maker on here once said "the hardest knife to make is the one already paid for"......

I have had lunch with Ian a few years ago and seen him at TruGrit a couple of times and because of this several people have contacted me on how to get what they paid for from Ian.

They are afraid to post anything in fear of getting Ian mad and not getting what they ordered.

At this point I suggest contacting PayPal and let them handle it.

Guy needs to grow up. 11 year olds act this way, not grown men.

I feel for you man, you know what he is doing is not right but he did help you out a little.
Anyone that makes their customers fear they won't get what they paid for for speaking out is a scumbag. There are way too many stories on this guy. I would just stay clear if I were you.

That is literally the dumbest argument someone can make. Who's family doesn't come first? I read this and thought he wanted a merit badge for caring for his family. I find people that make those proclamation tend to say that to convince themselves.

No offense but family and whatever equals zero when you take someone's money for an order. You make a deal, you honor it, no one cares about your sitcom life.

Yes to this 100%. And the way he kept banging on that drum, I don't even understand what he thought people were going to do. "Ohhhhhh....OH. This person has an infant at home that he is caring for, that's why he has had time to post on Instagram, Faceyspace, and he had time to take my money, but suddenly (snaps fingers) gee whiz, it's all about his family and he just doesn't have time to give me my money back right now. I mean, it's been a month, but hey, his family is always first. I just need to wait my turn, which most likely will come after the period by which a Paypal chargeback could be successfully initiated. Isn't that odd?" I don't even comprehend what he expected people to do.

I always think back to that skit Chris Rock did about this shit.
Why are you bragging that you take care of your family???? YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO THAT!!!!
Guy wants a medal for caring for his child?? Come on!
So typical.

Yep! That was a great sketch, and super on point here.

It's almost like when a child tells a lie. They tend to go into absurd levels of detail and add all these additional things, when a simple "I wasn't home on time because I was at Steve's house." would have done the trick.

Wow..and I thought I was the only one who dealt with this ass-hat. My experience was very much the same...so much back and forth, endless drama. Like palonej, when Ian tried to play the "my back hurts" card with me, I asked him which surgery(s) he's had. Crickets. I'm fused from L4 all the way down into and including my SI joint, so Ian got no sympathy there. I too had file a PP claim to get my money back. Hopefully Ian will make good on his promise to leave the knifemaking game (or scam in his case) and leave us trusting souls alone.

I expect that we will be seeing many similar stories to this one in the next decade to come. Makers who got into the business at a time when hype, inflation of prices, and "bro love" buffoonery and profiteering was rampant.

This is why I always make a point to not purchase or even own a knife produced by someone who has shown, at any point, a disregard for aspects of customer service and satisfaction. That includes asking for payments up front, ignoring communication, pushing "bro" off-the-book knives with ornate materials and embellishments for Instagram/Facebook friends in front of others who have been waiting 3 years on the order books for a plain Ti framelock... all show a fundamental lack of respect for the customer.

If the guy loves his family, among the best things he can do for them (especially children) is to not be a liar and not be a thief. Unless, of course, he thinks it's ok for his kid(s) to grow up to be liars and thieves.

Going through the exact same issue now. I am currently down $150 and after 6+ weeks of excused and lack of responses I finally escalated the issue to a paypal claim today. Heres hoping I close this chapter ASAP.

Man, I'm glad you got your money. I only got my refund from him only from the great members here to force him to refund me my money. because I would have been SOL.
He seemed nice but in the end a scam artist through and through.

anyone want to guess what he post on his IG account? I bet more BS as usual

Buyers beware and run the other way quickly

Had nearly the exact same thing last year. Paid for some buckeye burl then radio silence for 1.5 months. I sent numerous DMs and emails yet no response. Literally 15 minutes after I escalate it on Paypal I get a DM on instagram with excuses about all the things people have posted (mainly the baby). I get being busy and having a new baby (my daughter was born a week after his) but seeing as I was in my third year of medical school at the time and my wife was a resident physician, even we could find time to do something so arduous like mailing something, logging into PayPal, Instagram, etc.

I thought about letting it go since it wasn't much money but once he started getting snippy and condescending towards me I had had enough. Glad I'm not the only one with this experience.
