Steel Junky's - need opinions

Hi Aerofocus.

Welcome to the the bladeforums.

Kelly is working up a sign-up list. At least to give us an idea how many are really interested.

We made some modifications to the handle of the "mule" for more choices in handle fastening locations.

We won't know costs until the run is close to being finished.

We've pretty much decided on 52100. We're chasing steel now.

It is good basic steel that is not common on many (any?) production models. It is a ball bearing steel that custom makers prefer. It is also available in the US and would be a good first run to see how the project goes.

Sal, that sounds great! If the cost is reasonable (it always is for your designs) I will likely get one.

Sal, have you settled on a thickness yet? A 2mm thichness would really be nice.

Hi Smegs,

3mm is the plan. Full flat grind. The blade is 3.5" long, and 1.25" wide at the hilt. I think 2'mm would be too thin for "outdoor" use.

Thanks Sal, I can live with either. The thin crowd will probably have them thinned out the day they receive them. :)

Sal, do you have a time table on the release of these? I'm excited and would like to know if I have to wait six months or a year or any variation there of.

These should be great canidates for custom handles.....and sheaths....hmmmm

Sal, 60-61 should be perfect. That would be my request. I have a dislike for underhardened bearing steel knives. This size knife won't be a heavy duty chopper anyway. The flat grind and blade shape says excellent cutter and slicer to me. I'm really looking foreward to this Sal! Joe/Raleigh

Also it may make a nice companion to a Hossom Chopper. It could could easily preform well as a small bush craft blade provided I get it some new handles....

I just found this thread :( I'd be interested in getting one of these knives to try out. I figure in my line of work I can give most any steel a pretty good workout. the environment I'd use it in would be good to test edge retention, ease of sharpening, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, strength, and toughness. I'm not worried about handle material or sheath.

I like the look of the knife blank posted in the thread. very utilitarian.

I don’t have any idea on what the hardness of 52100 would be best at. I’ll just say the same thing an old girlfriend used to say, the harder you can get it the more I’ll like it.
