Well, what I was concerned about went through ok. However it appears buyer beware with Steve.
He does not hold any rank in the ABS nor is he a member.
jf

Jerry, if you go to the ABS website and check the Bladesmith Links page you will see that Steve is listed there. He is also listed as an apprentice smith im the 2001 ABS directory. I realize that he could quite well have not kept up his membership, but if that is the case he should be removed from the links page.

About two years ago I sent Steve Corkum close to $1000 for a Wakizashi I had ordered from him. While I typically prefer not to send money in advance, he had told me the wakizashi was almost completely finished and he just needed to wrap the handle. The delays went on for a few months, and I tried contacting him repeatedly with limited success. I did eventually reach him on the phone, however, and he was able to describe to me the grave health problems he and his wife had recently suffered (I don't remember the details but one of them was apparently life threatening...something about a liver?)

Anyway, while I was frustrated and somewhat suspicious, I took him at his word, and I did eventually receive the wakizashi along with a kiridashi that he gave me as consolation for the time and trouble.

It's a shame that he has sbeen stricken with so many frequent, chronic, and seemingly unrealted, persistent health problems.

I ordered a Kogarusu from Steve on June 21, 2003 and sent an official check in the amount of $325.00 for payment in full on June 23, 2003 with a cover letter confirming the details of the order. I have called him many times and heard the same reasons for non-delivery. More than anything else, I am puzzled. He sounds like an OK guy on the phone, but my money is gone and I still have no knife. All I really want is the knife I ordered and after reading the other threads, I decided to tell my story, too. Any suggestions from other members on how I can get the knife I paid for seven months ago? Thanks!

you know that new mountain dew commercial where the kayaker gets swallowed up by the whale? then he flicks his lighter on and discovers that there are many others already inside to greet him?

well, you just got swallowed, and having already been inside for 3 years, let me be the first to say "Hi!".

a better question is, how can we get the word out so this mental-case can be stopped?

his theivery has been common knowledge on BF/USN for like a year, yet here is another new victim.

p.s. still waiting for someone to post his current contact info :(

Pfandek and Sdesarno,

Im sure Spark would be able to help you. After all he seems to have the inside track to Steve. It seems that Steve was able to fight through all of the illness and personal problems to get him his knives on time.

Come on Spark, Im sure you want to help some of your forum memebers.

You can at least provide current contact information for Steve. Obviously you have this.

Perhaps you could act as a go between for Steve and all the forum members having problems with him.

It seems all these other deadbeat makers can post their "excuses" as a sticky. I think you should offer Steve the same opportunity.

Im sure he would be happy to address each and every problem. Provide a current address, phone number and email address.

Imagine what it would do for his reputation to have happy customers post their "good" experience with Steve.

Come on Spark what do you say?

Wow Les, you sure seem like you have an axe to grind. I wasn't aware it was my job to act as a go between for every person we do business with; I only relayed that I got my knives in a timely manner. Perhaps you could start a sideline business doing as official go-between for all makers, since you've offered my time so freely.

Anyhow, yes I'm in pretty regular contact with Steve; he's been calling me (not vice versa) weekly. As usual, I strongly urge anyone who has an actual greivance to contact Steve directly. They should have his contact number - the one I have is a cell phone and I am unwilling to publish that. I've let him know about this thread, however.

In the meantime, as I've always said, if someone has an actual problem, they should step forward and say so. That's what this forum is for. It's not for a bunch of bystanders to pile on and muddy the waters - it's for consumers to find out about actual transactions (good or bad) with makers & dealers.

sdesarno - Great post! ROFLMAO! Sorry to hear of your trouble with Corkum, I do wish you the best of luck dealing with that guy. While I've never dealt with him, I am aware of his reputation from the guys at TAD.

Your post reminded me of this funny cartoon I just got in an e-mail.
Seems sorta appropriate!:D

You be cool!

Spark,

Quote: "as I've always said, if someone has an actual problem, they should step forward and say so.

Three members have done as you have asked.

Pfandek has paid for a knife in full 7 months ago. To date he has received nothing but excuses.

Sdesarno paid $400 for a knife close to 4 years ago..and no knife or money back.

PhilL from 2 the Hilt is waiting on $1,000 worth of knives. Perhaps you could use a few more specifics.

Phil is a dealer on BF, Sdesarno is a Gold Member.

Sdesarno has asked twice for contact information for Steve. Your reply is that you only have his cell phone number.

I would hazard to guess you having just received knives a few weeks ago. That you probably have an invoice for those knives. Generally, you can find all the contact information on that.

Spark, people have laid out specific problems as you have asked.

What other information would you like from the aforementioned individuals. Im sure they would be happy to provide you with as much information as necessary.

Perhaps your right, asking you to be a go-between was a bit much. I just thought since you were in a position to. You would want to help members of your forum.

Ah I see. So I should take a personal interest in every single case then? Perhaps, Les, I should even reimburse them out of my pocket?

Les, I'm providing a venue for these people to air their problems out. Without me, they wouldn't even have that. Not to mention it serves as warning to those who don't know and would like the information. Maybe you'd be interested in taking out a few full page ads describing this (and every other deal) in a few magazines, out of your pocket? No? Then in the meantime, how about you back off?

After all, what am I going to do, ban Corkum? I don't think he's even registered. And when I've talked with him about 888 & TAD, he gave me extremely credible explanations for each. 888 got their knives, & from what I was told, TAD would have had theirs quite a while ago if someone could make up their mind. But that's he said - she said. I know from experience how certain parties can twist or omit the facts when convenient.

So how about you chill out a bit, Les. Since you are so unwilling to support this site yourself, I'm a little less than inclined to respond to your perceived "needs". Should Steve or Phil choose to contact me offline, they can do so - I'm always happy to lend a hand where I can. That doesn't mean I'm going to publish a private phone number just because you whine a little. And it further doesn't justify the peanut gallery piling on because they heard one side of a story. If you think Steve hasn't felt the effects of this thread, you'd be foolish. It's not in his best interest to not honor his obligations.

Well, at least I know where I stand............

nevermind about the contact info, i can get it myself, i just thought it would be easy to get the most up-to-date info here...

"Perhaps, Les, I should even reimburse them out of my pocket?"

spark, i can accept paypal or m.o., remember if you send me a personal check i will have to wait until it clears before i will be willing to post that this matter has been resolved :)

It's in the mail tomorrow Steve. Oh wait, here, how about some coastal property in Arizona? :D

Spark,

You asked for people to give you specific examples. They did what you asked. You in turn distance yourself from the very people who you asked to explain their problem. Nor has anyone ever hinted that you are some how responsible or should reimburse these people.

I wouldn't have even suggested you get involved had you not posted on this thread saying you got your knives and Steve is a good guy.

Of course you got your knives. Steve got your money and a spokesman for nothing more than delivering his knives on time to you.

However, if you were the one who had been screwed out of your money, I suspect you would be singing a different tune.

As for taking out full page ads. I generally run different size ads in different magazines. In addition to that, I give interviews on numerous subjects concerning custom knives.

Most recently, and it seems very appropriate for this thread. I wrote a guest editorial for Tactical Knives on the subjects of depostis.

Perhaps you should put this article as a sticky on GB&U. With the first link to this thread as an example of who not do give a deposit to.

It was nice to see you recommended to Steve that he post here. I was confused though, as that almost bordered on personal involvement on your part.

Spark you can't lead from the rear.

p.s. Frank! awesome cartoon.

given the time in my case, my lump is closer to the snake's ass.

i'm hoping to be crapped to freedom soon...

Les, so I guess I should have just stood mute when I got my knives in a timely fashion? This forum is for experiences both good and bad, remember? Did I post long winded flowery defenses of Steve? No. I just related I got my knives quickly. Until you started with your tripe, I was pretty much just emphasizing the facts - people with problems should step up. Sideline commentators should keep out.

I fund this site out of my own pocket. You don't. If you want to critique how things are being run, you should put your money where your mouth is. You think I'm not doing a good enough job? Put up or shut up - do a better one. You won't, because you can't. In the meantime, keep your comments to yourself; because I did act as a go between for 888 and talked to Steve about other people. 888 got their knives and Corkum is working on other orders. You, on the other hand, did diddly squat and yet you presume to lecture me on what I should or shouldn't do?

Les, grow up. If you want to lead, do so - no one needs an armchair quarterback. For someone who comments about leading from the front, you act more like a backseat driver. Please don't be offended if I pass over your "advice & suggestions" when the offer no merit. Furthermore, Les, I've noticed you selling knives of makers who you've ranted & railed against. Does that make you a hypocrite, or just a profiteer? Are you going to act as a go between for those individuals who are waiting on their knives?

Glad you liked the cartoon Steve. Thought I'd inject a bit of humor into the thread as some comic relief. Seemed like "tensions were running high";)

But I must stop here and refrain from injecting anymore of my un-substantiated 2nd-hand anecdotal evidence offerings, least I again be accused of "dog-piling on without a license" and relegated to the status of "member of the the peanut gallery", or is that more appropriately a "Gold Member of the peanut gallery". Wow, and to think, I even bought a ticket to this game! I can't wait for the 7th inning stretch!:D

I have but one more comment to all ye who visit here:
