Bad Steven Ketchen <spketch> MIA: Overbooked? Off the grid? Lost his phone? What's up?

Yup...he WAS delivering on certain jobs for some reason pretty far into the scam he was running on us. That's what initially got me steamed. He gave me sob story upon sob story for why he couldn't get started on mine and I found out thru friends he was working them in and getting them out the door.

It is a mystery...the guy was as solid as the day is long for quite a long run...that's what pushes me to give him "just one more chance." Hell, the Det. said he didn't even have a speeding ticket and he was visibly shaken by being talked to by LE.

But, on the counterpoint...it would follow that such a clean guy who was so affected by having a LEO knock on his door and dealt with in such a frank manner would be INSTANTLY MOVED TO GET HIS ASS IN GEAR AND DO THE RIGHT THING!!! And still all were getting is stone walls and crickets.

A riddle wrapped in mystery inside an enigma...

I would say he was delivering a few knives here and there to bait in more knives he had no intention of returning.
Like every once in awhile some one would post he was taking a long time then another would post recived my knife and I love it. That got him more time to get more people to send him knives. Do 2 to 3 hundred dollars of work to lure in 7 to 8 or more he had no intention of returning. Not saying for sure just seems like what was happening to me. He thought this one out for sure.

He thought this one out for sure.

I agree. I think he had been planning on keeping knives for a while now. Not only did he scam first timers, he preyed on the trust and friendship built up from his previous customers.

No remorse with Steve. I honestly doubt he feels one bit of shame on this mess of his creation. His only regret is that he might get caught. Then, if he does, he'll slither back here and ask for forgiveness and blame someone or something for his actions.

Tic toc tic toc... Thursday morning:
Hello this is Clinton ma. Police deparment how may I help you.
Me.. Steve Ketchen failed to make contact with me.
Clinton PD: wreacking crew on its way to the Ketchen residence you have a good day sir
Me: thank you, be safe.

I've kept to my promise and sat back and watched, I gave my opinions and even tried to help by appealing to Steve a couple of ways which as with everyone else was ignored. I wanna call him what he is but as I have no dog in this fight other than having some friends scammed of their money and knives so I can't call him what he is...

I've never seen a group like you guys here with issues with a service provider ever want a scam artist like him still come back. I really believe able if between today and Thursday if he contacted everyone of you and had someone post on this thread for him you'd still give him a chance to make it right. What he did isn't that unheard of even here. What is unusual at least until recently is how faithful and forgiving members can be of someone who so obviously has taken them for a ride. He was that good. The only other debacle circling the commode still is the company with the ! In their name.

I was even hopeful but even I know when the boats got more holes than anyone could plug to keep it afloat and this one's all but sunk. Thing is you need to keep it moving forward, keep sending emails and making calls so you can show you actively continued to get your goods and money back. This could take easily over a year to come to any resolution. Hell odds are even if they caught him there are far more dangerous people deserving of a 280 lb 6'6" cellie named Butt Rheamer than Steve.

Problem with scammin' is the same as it is with counterfeiting, it's easier to do than make an honest living. This is something they learn to be good at and will always go back to. One thing to come from all of this is that he is high visibility now. Every one of you folks are an early warning system now and if he ever tryst this scam again someone will spot him and out him. He'll never pull off a scam at this level again.

The other thing you'll take away from this is a friendship that evolved over the months in this thread. I've made friends here that I've been friends with on and off BF for nearly 20 years now. My Old Man used to tell me all the time, ...there's always something to be learned even from a bad situation or person, usually it's how to recognize either earlier on so you don't get burned by either again. At the very least you learn what it takes to be a real douche and what not to do to become one.

I still hope and wish that you can all be made whole in some manner but the odds are against you gettin' anything short of the satisfaction of outing him for what he is and every time he pops back up you'll be able to show what type of person he really is, regardless of how much he has you convinced of his good faith and credibility. We need a special Scammer banner to put under name of any member or service provider not permanently banned awaiting the opportunity to make things right. Anyone exhibiting scammer like behavior like Steve on a temporary ban till he either makes it right or the mods get tired of his lack of response and boot him off.

People run into hard times, people make bad decisions, sometimes more than once but we all want to give them the benefit of doubt. We all want to see our friends here succeed and buy their goods and services but when someone like Steve comes along and perpetrates such a huge scam it's easy to get hurt and mistrustful. Don't let this experience sour you, just let it make you more vigilant. Remember the old adage, Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

Wishin' everyone the best of outcomes on this nightmare of scam.

I am new to Blade Forum.. I just joined and Steve was my first foray into purchasing the services of someone in this community. I normally do not prepay for service not yet rendered mainly due to the debacle of delay of product with servive knives. But Steve had a proven track record. People praised his work and the joy of dealing with a person who was honest, easy to work with and communicated in a timely manner. So I sent him a brand new knife along with a,cashiers check. He acknowledged receipt of all and was communicating with me in a timely manner. In fact we were in discussion for another job and were working out the details when he abruptly stopped communicating, this was in mid June. I emailed him a bunch of times. I wrote him two letters giving him three options on how to communicate. This past week I have again emailed him and tried to call him with negative results. I personally take no joy in making the phone call to the Clinton PD this Thursday, but phone I will if he doesn't contact one of us before the deadline ends. He has been given a rare chance to get back on track and begin the hard journey to restart
His reputation.

What stands out to me in this mess is the willingness to try and help Steve. This is from people that have a bigger stake in the game than me and have dealt with him in the past. Yes a lot anger but still holding out an olive branch for redemption. I personally think a lot of the anger is watching a trusted member take a wrong turn and turn his back on those who are willing to help along with the anger of being duped and ignored.

What hurts the most is the collateral damage to those not involved in the scam, mainly his family and especially the children.

That all being said after gauging the caliber of people I,have met on this forum I don't think I would hesitate to deal with anyone... i just won't prepay for services not yet rendered.

Still hoping this issue is resolved before Thursday.

I think this is the right way to look at this sir. I hate that this happened to all of you, and really hate that it happened right off the bat in your first deal here. This kind of situation has not been indicative of the bulk of dealings I've been fortunate enough to have transacted here. I hope you and Ron and everyone else are made whole when this runs its course.

Total silence... I have skid stains in my skivie with more honor than what Steve Ketchen demonstrates.
He has proven to be a skunk thief with no honor a cowardly punk to be sure.

Sorry he didn't contact you maybe others have been contacted very unlikely but maybe. This guy is scum for sure and as I've said before I really hope you guys get made right. Let us know know what the police say. Just think he has kids and this is the values he's teaching them.

I was still holding out hope he would contact you guys.
Shit.
Call the detective......he will not be in a good mood when he hears Steve made no effort at all.

Got through this time... he was still not at his desk but was able to leave a msg... now we wait some more... but now he will at least been made aware that Ketchen is not playing according to his rules.

I've been reading this thread frequently, thinking about how close I was to falling victim. Steven (rightly so) came recommended to me when I first joined here. I contacted him to customize 2 knives for a cancer research drive I was running. Everything was late; he never did give me a quote, just did the work and charged me; and there were some very strange oddities which took place. Thankfully, all was resolved. One of the things I found quite odd: I gave each sponsor a special gift - a limited edition PK Design Flashlight that had the contest name engraved. I made it clear, repeatedly, that I was taking care of my sponsors.

I did not receive a thank you from Steven for the longest time. One day he called me, and wanted Paul Kim's personal contact information in Hong Kong, so that he could thank him for the flashlight. I was taken aback by this. I told Steven that Paul had no idea what was done with the lights, that it was me who made sure Steve and others received the lights, and if anybody should be thanked, it was me. Steve sort of unenthusiastically thanked me (I did appreciate at least that recognition), and said goodbye. I couldn't figure that one out; it was like Steve had never heard one word I said about the lights.

The knives were to (a) be rec'd by me from a sponsor (b) sent to Josh at REK for grinding, polishing, etc ("metal mods") and then Josh would (c) send to Steve for the plastic mods.

This was much too difficult. Work was missed; one of the knives was a complete mess. I will say that Steve did in fact step up and help out.

I had been considering having my own knives customized as well. After going through the stuff with Steve and Josh, I did not.

I'm quite troubled by what I read in this thread. Staying positive: I amazed that you guys are willing to still work with Steve to help him make you whole. You are the best.

Hi guys, thought I'd chime in with my "update" although really zero progress has been made. Several days ago I texted Steve (again) and requested an update and he send my knives back - no response. Frustrated, I then contacted the Clinton PD and after getting past the somewhat confused front desk guy, I was forwarded to their detective "bureau" (which seems to be one guy) and left a message on his machine with my contact details. Two days later now and still no call back (not that I'm terribly surprised).

I'm still trying to wrap my head around all of this. For more than three years, Steve and I had a great relationship and I was very proud to show off his work to Sal and Eric (and a few other lucky Spydernuts) at the Oregon Knife Collectors Association shows. It is certainly a lesson on how even the best of things can turn to crap in a heartbeat. :(

You had posted some pics of his work on the Spydie forum, that's how I got started with Steve.
3 years of great work and service.......and now, here we are.
I was dumbfounded when this thread popped up.
Steve was trying to get me to send him 3 knives and the cash required for 3 scale sets in July......would've been a big hit. Still can't believe this shit.
Which knives did you send him??
Joe

And the list keeps growing... haven't heard back from the detective yet... but it appears he is getting an earful... call if you haven't done so yet... Ketchen needs to be held accountable for his skullduggery.

Still now word back from Ketchen (no surprise) or the detective (again, no surprise). It's starting to pain me greatly that I've lost my Lum Tanto sprint. :(

Don't give up hope on the Clinton Ma.Detective just yet... it took him over a week to get back to me the first time. If he hasn't contacted me by Friday I will call back.. the squeaky wheel approach. Hoping that Peteytwopointone has some luck with sending Steve a prepaid mailer to send his knives back.. not holding my breath though. Really think our knives are gone, hocked to a pawn shop or sold to others.

Something to keep in mind - While this case is very important to the people who have been scammed, it is just one more case on the detective's desk. There are always way more cases than there are detectives.

At the county level in my small rural county (1,088 sq miles - slightly bigger than Rhode Island - 1,045 land sq miles), there are a dozen or less detectives for the unincorporated part of our county working most of the time. Retirements, vacations, illnesses and departures lower the number of detectives actively working cases on a daily basis. Add in prepping for and testifying at court trials and that cuts the time each one has to work cases.

Clinton, MA is a "larger small town" at around 14K people. It probably only has 1 or 2 detectives.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease, but the yelling politicians and Captains get the attention.

High profile cases will always take precedence over the small potato cases. And in the realm of reality from the detective's view point, a few people getting scammed over knives is going to be really low on his priority list. He's not going to ignore the situation entirely, but is he has major theft ring cases, home invasion-style burglaries, commercial business break-ins, a few internet fraud/theft cases will suck hind teat every time.
