Stockman Sunday picture show

Church and lunch with my wife over on Bogue Banks, now home with some small indoor chores, but beautiful weather, got some rod holders to install on the t-top of my boat - going to get to them shortly. Needed a Sunday Knife, so I pulled out this standard 1981 Case 6318 with some nice dark, jigged bone handles to carry with me today. OH

Early last week I found a nice enough older (1974) Case 6318 HP to add to my modest collection of 18 pattern Case Knives. Other than shelf wear the knife is NOS. I used some polishing paste on the shield and bolsters to get them shining again, blades are okay as is (top picture is the "after", bottom picture is the "before"). Deep red jigged bone, I'd call it cranberry color, really nice fire in direct sunlight, good W&T too. OH

I have looked at that version often but only online what are your impressions of build quality?

It's a hard question to answer, everyone has different views on the subject. I kind of draw a dividing line, pre-internet and Internet eras. This one is pre-internet.

They are solid knives that feel good. Scales, bolsters and shields fit as they should. They don't snap like a bear trap, blade centering (always a factor when it comes to a Stockman) is generally good, you may see the occasional rub on a blade or liner. If you look at them as a solid, working knife with some nice touches here and there they are really very nice. Real jigged bone, and this series of knives could be had in either stainless or carbon steel blades. That particular knife is stainless.

The round shield Henckels knives were contract made by Boker roughly 1991 through 2007. I'm particularly fond of them, I own about a bazillion of them.
