Strider Knives. Why So Much?

I don't own a Strider and I've never handled one. That said, I'm fairly certain I could find a custom within ballpark price-range or I'd opt to buy something from CRK. I just don't like the whole Mick telling tall-tales-to-sell-knives thing. Puts him in the same tank as Pelton, imo (ok, not quite as bad...) Not looking to antagonise anyone, but that's just how I see it. I certainly don't hold it against anyone else for making a different consumer choice for themselves...

:)

yah seriously, love the design and look of the SNG but everytime I get one I just feel like a CRK is more worth it.

My answer is always the same, I don't know, that's just how much they cost! Why do candy bars cost almost a buck?

To tempt us at the checkout line.:)

Really on the Striders, it's just like all other things, folks are wanting what Strider offers and will pay what he is asking. If you feel your 0300 was better money spent, well the ZT's are great knives, so you won't be dissapointed.

I haven't given in to Strider's game, yet.
If you're surprised about the price now, just wait til it goes up.

why does a Ferrari cost $200000 ? when a eco XIII for $30000 is almost as fast around a track? eh lost of reasons. but in the end a car gets u from point A to point B. and my knife cuts from point A to point B. I do love my knives tho for what they are, engineering, machining, art. And as a mechanical engineer i appreciate the work. The craftsmanship and tolerances.

Striders like said above are made in a small shop by a handful or skilled craftsman. and everyone is out to make money so thats how they make theirs. I do support them and their products very much though :)

All depends on how bad you want one or are willing to hold out till a deal on a used one comes up. Even then, it's gonna cost. Why? It's just the way it is and it ain't ever gonna change.

There is no Best. Too many uses for a knife, what is the best chopper is different than slicer, or fixed vs folder yada yada.
As for "tactical kraze" I'm 50 yrs. old and been collecting since I was old enough to get caught with a knife before it was ok with my Mom.
I'm probably fairly typical of most on here. I just admire things that are great at what they were designed to do.
Knives (All kinds) guns, whatever.
High Quality speaks for itself and will ALWAYS attract a following sometimes a fanatical one.
Strider, CRK, Hinderer ALL have followings, some cross over - ALL will testify to the quality of their personal favorites as well as a handful of other knives.
They command a price and there will be those willing to pay. Do they get value commensurate to the expenditure - I think so and obviously so do they:)

I've traded into every one I have, two SMF's and an SNG. The pain of obtaining them was much easier to handle had I spent hard cash on them. Each one was new or like new and all I did was trade away knives I already owned but didn't carry or stopped carrying.

There are more ways than one to skin an expensive knife.

As far as my opinion of them? I love them - a lot. The three specimens I have are fantastic in every way. Not a thing wrong with any of them and in fact, each functions extremely well.

I'm going to ignore the original question, but give the original poster advice: Look for a Strider used on the exchange or try and find a Buck/Strider on the bay or also on the exchange here. They are discontinued, but can be found in the $100-1130, range, I think. You can find a used Strider in the $300 ish range.

And the congregation said "amen!"

My own personal take on Striders (or, why I own four):

1. Not a "value" knife at all (poor bang:buck ratio), but
2. Really excellent, truly excellent ergos for me, and
3. Occasional limited runs with exceptional blades (two of my four are S110V).

YMMV. As Rubiconss said, there are way too many excellent knives out there to get your shorts twisted up.

May I slightly rephrase the question, since I understand that market forces (what ppl are willing to pay as well as good marketing) and cool "tactical" looks do influence the price a lot.

How is its build quality? I don't know exactly how to define build quality, but when I see it, I know it. CRK, with is extremely tight tolerances, is he absolute nr. 1 for me in this respect. Zero tolerance (especially 0300), some Benchmades (710, Bradley Alias) and some Spyderco's (military, paramilitary) are great as well. Where do the Striders fit in?
