Suggestion box!

After looking at those Madd Maxx pictures, I had a thought--DDR folding gladius. Get a leaf blade or wasp-waisted blade, mebbe 6-8" long, and perhaps slightly more curvy flippers to give the look of a gladius...
Folding version of this would be cool!

Search for Claxton and you'll probably turn up some stuff on the boards about that piece.

Nice! I think my favorite part about that blade is the sheath, and how the fuller is molded into it. That's some fine leather bending! But yes, a folding beefy leaf blade or gladius style blade would be pretty epic. Only problem is that the handle would have to be quite long. For a folding short sword, a wakizashi with a long hilt might be a little easier to do.

I like where you guys are going with this -- I think it'd be a sweet use of the Madd Maxx platform. There are so many cool sword and dagger shapes from different parts of the world and historical periods, and having variants of the Maxx with those blade shapes would be an awesome way to pay tribute to them. With all the cool machining and inlay work Darrel and his crew are able to do on the handles, I bet those could also be tweaked to fit the style/feel of the blade and the place/time it came from.

Personally, I don't really care about trying to make the size similar to that of a folding short sword, and in fact would rather see it made with the MM 5.5 (or even MM 4) platform for reasons of practicality, both on Darrel's end and on ours (as the folks who'd be carrying/using such knives). I know Darrel has made a handful of custom Madd Maxxes with 7" blades and even one with a 9" blade in the past, but I think we're much more likely to see some of these blade variants happen if we stick to the sizes that he regularly makes. Just my two cents on the blade size question...

Holy crap, can you imagine a DDR-designed knife in the style of an Egyptian Kopis? Or a Turkish Kilij? That would be crazy sick.

A small folder 3" or less. Here's the twist. Have the back of the handle fold out so that you can have something nice and small in your pocket but with a full size handle.

Try as hard as you can to look past the crap-tasticness (new word) of my drawing. You'd in essence get a 4" full tang fixed blade or pull a pin out and slide the lock and have a eight and a bit inch folder. The blade should hold up to harder use when folded since it would be a fixed blade then open it up if you need a mini machete (or just want to impress or scare some folks). I've yet to see this done before and in my mind it screams DDR awesomeness.

Been done before. I forget who did it, but if memory serves me right, it was a custom maker. The idea is not new, but the concept is pretty cool. You'd need a sheath to carry it of course, but that goes without saying.

Drats. Still would make a wicked production knife. What do you think the odds of getting one like that made up are? Essentially a 9" MM with a chopped handle and a locking mechanism/ locking pin. Preferably with a stretched radian blade with a trident tip.

I'll put it on my agenda for things to talk about when I call him next week. If Darrel does entertain this idea, I can tell you one thing right now. He won't do it unless he comes up with a more elegant solution than a pull pin. A pull pin just doesn't fit with his design philosophy. I have a more elegant idea in mind that uses a sliding button.

EDIT: I'm drawing up the lock on graph paper and then transferring it to autocad. If my idea pans out on paper (IE: everything works given the measurement constraints), I'll pass it on to Darrel. You probably will not see it. I figure if this is a new lock design, I at least want Darrel to use it first, that is if he wants to even go ahead and tackle this as a side project.

The pin is mostly a secondary lock. In the picture I do have a little sliding lock at the base by the pivot. I was figuring using that for the closed lock and using a frame lock for when the blade is open.

Having been playing way too much Assassins Creed lately, I just have to throw this out there. Double action OTF Madd Maxx with giant blade. Ya know, hidden blade style... :D

He just might. He's like the modern day knife-making version of Leonardo Da Vinci, after all.

Also, I made a persian-style blade today. I like it a lot. Now I want an HTM persian folder...

Oh fine. I wasn't putting blades up, but now that you mention it, I'll throw one up next to a gun hammer so you can see how fricking awesome a persian-style blade would look in a gun hammer handle...

Evidently Darrel and I have very similar ideas about ergonomics. Obviously a folder wouldn't have a choil for choking up, but the way the handle on the GH curves forward is well suited for a persian blade, which would give the opened knife a bit of an s-shape.

This particular blade is pre-heat treat, and hasn't been handled yet, so forgive the rough look. Still, it should be sufficient to give you an idea of what an HTM GH Persian might look like.

Damn! Now that is a fine piece of knife! You do good work, sir.

Did I ever tell you I'm deeply in love with Persian blades? Here's a knife I designed and had brought to life by Reese Weiland:

We should collaborate on a knife. A DDR-inspired Persian blade. If we leave it here in the DDR suggestion box, maybe Darrel will get a little inspiration from it! :D

I like that a lot. I saw that before. IKBS + ETAC on that would be a sweet DDR collab.
