Survival Gun of last resort.

For a LAST DITCH, ONLY ONE HANDGUN, HAS TO BE SMALL "survival gun, I'll take my:

Ruger SP-101 3".

Enough power to kill CLEANLY large game (including DANGEROUS large game like wild boar), bullets are accurate enough for rabbit sized game. For smaller game, use CCI shotshells. They actually work better from short barrels because they don't spin up the shot cup like a longer barrel does.

IMO .22s are for pairing. Either a .22 rifle and substantial handgun, or .22 handgun with substantial rifle.

BTW, the whole "no one wants to stand in front of one and get shot in the head" argument is a BS strawman argument. Few, if any, will volunteer to be shot in the head with a BB gun, that doesn't make it a good stopper or a good choice.

Yeah I agree. In a situation where I can have a gun like that... I'm taking my Glock 32. 14 rounds and just about the same ballistics as a basic 357 Magnum. But again... I'm talking about small packable firepower. Packable in a small space. You need a holster and some sort of lugage for that weapon and an 100 rounds. You can carry the the mini with 100 rounds in your pocket and still have room for other stuff.

I'll start his by saying I don't own a handgun....although I do a fair amount of shooting with them... for an over all survival combo...I favor a .22 rifle... and a 4 inch barrel .357 wheelgun....the .22 is for filling the pot..the .357 is for safety....If I could only pick one fire arm however I'd have to go with a mossberg 500 in 12 gauge....easy to get ammo..and super versatile...for everything.

That's not the point here... If I'm sling gear on... I leave with either an AR-15 and 22 pistol, or a 12ga and 22 pistol. I'm talking about a last ditch (This or Bare Hands) type of gun.

I'm with ya brother.

Actually, I have carried my TP-22 instead of my Combat Commander .45 for some hikes.

I think your logic is totally reasonable.

As for a fullsized weapon... I owned one of the Taurus Judge revolvers for a while... that was an interesting survial gun. It could shoot 45lc and 410 shotgun shells. I had the version with the 3" cylinder for fullsized 410 shells. It was actually impressive (Which is not something I notice much from Taurus). That thing could kill lots of food. I never got a chance to try but I wanted to see if you could fish with it. I wanted to see how it would do shooting fish close to the surface of the water with the 410. I bet it would work.

You'd be surprised... if you can get right over top and hit the water straight... birdshot sinks pretty far with great speed. And fish aren't that durable. We shot it in some water... but sadly no fish around to test it on that day. I was thinking maybe as much as three feet with the right shot... but you're right... 1 foot you could get them at an angle and not take the chance of scaring them off. I know it will shoot a bird and a squirel out of a tree because my buddy shot both of them with it when he took it deer hunting as a snake gun. He said it killed the bird... but he had to shoot the squirel again. But it knocked him out of the tree and all but killed him. And you could take a rabbit easy with it cause they'll get close.

LOL... I'm making myself want another now... and I think they have like a 6" model too. I had the 4"... I bet a 6" would pattern a little tighter. Buck shot in the 4" spread to about a foot group after only about 10 to 12 yards... Made it a nasty idea for SD... bascially 3 9mm balls hitting ya in the chest 6" apart from one another... LOL... Instant tripple tap.

Ok. Is "the point" that this is the best last ditch gun ever? I disagree, and I dont see the point of it at all.

I am having some trouble here. While I understand your ace in a hole type thing, just beacuse you can carry 50 rounds and other stuff in your pocket in the woods? Ok.

I carry my sidearm on my hip, IWB, and it is every bit as concealed as I need, although, I dont see a need for concealing your gun in a survival situation. Urban EDC? Definatly. Woods survival? dont matter. You can conceal a 4in 686 .357 IWB. Or you can carry it in a drop leg holster. It isnt gonna matter in a wilderness survival situation.

Now if its ammo size, well, I can carry a ruger single six in .22 with a wiide variety of bbl lengths drop leg, mexican carry, cowboy style, crossdraw, whatever. And still have just as many rounds in my pocket and a way way way better tool for the job.

Now, Im might be missing the point, but I would opt for that as a minimum firearm in the woods. Yeah you might be able to take a bird with it, or other small game, or hell you might be able to drop a charging grizzly with it.:p However, why would you carry that for a survival gun?

Nope... Only got a 2.5 inch chamber with a 6.5" barrel... The 3 inch chamber only comes in a 3" barrel from what I can tell... kinda dumb... I would love a 3" chamber with 6.5" barrel. Here are some pics for anyone not familiar with this gun.

Without getting into legalities, what if you wanted something small to pack in an area where you might encounter a survival situation, but a .38 might be noticed a bit more and might not exactly be appreciated?

How would you get into a wilderness survival situation there, just walk to the 7-11 and get a slurpy and a burito. Chris

You are misunderstanding completely. The point is what if all you can carry is what you can fit in your pockets... Fine.. you got your fullsized 6 shot revolver... how many more rounds can you carry on ya? another 12 maybe? Not 100 with a bag or something... and even if you did... you've run out of room to carry anything else... I'm talking about the bare minimum... if all you could take was just what you can fit in your pockets or a little fanny pack... would you think the mini 22 might be useful. Of Course if we can bring whatever we want in a backpack or slung over our shoulder... where dragging out the 12ga, AR-15 and Glock 32... That's not what I'm talking about.

SteelJunky. I have a S&W .38 and a Ruger mark II .22. I often go on hikes and such , end up leaving them behind because they are awkward to carry, along with my other gear. That mini revolver has a place. I want one too.

Yeah, but there are lots of better options out there in a .22

If its all you can fit on your person id rather have a full size revolver in .22 with ammo in my pocket, and the gun IWB. Your right on the ammo thing. I think thats why so many of us pack a .22 on the trail. Ammo takes up very little space.

Now, if that was all I had, then it is better then nothing. Im not against those little pistolas, they are neat little guns, but if I had to leave in a hurry, and could only cram stuff in my pockets for some reason, id go for a full size .22 IWB.

but a firearm is a very very personal choice. What works for me will not neccisarily work for anyone else. Im an odd duck.

I do look forward to a review of the weapon though. Im really curious what you can put it through if you really push it balisticly. What ammo you usin in that thing?

No

Sure... Me too. I'm not really trying to say that this is what is ideal. Or even efficient... just... what are people's thoughts on it as a last ditch gun for survival sitautions. Assume you don't have a holster... Or you can't carry anything on your belt. Just a what if type of thing.

I'm going to the range tomorrow... I'll see how far out I can hit a cigarrette pack or something with that little mini 22. It's gonna be windy though... so I'm sure that'll effect things. But wind is a part of nature and that's what we're talking about so i'll do my best.

Ok, I see what you are sayin...

Whats the weight on one of those?

I think that its a neat idea to say, "hey, what if this is all I had? Could I fare well with it?"

Balistics will tell the tale. But it will tell the tale individually. Unfortunatly with these things, everyone will be differant, but you can reall gage effectiveness off somebodys test. I look forward to seein what she will do!!

Ok, if you don blue jeans a larger gun wont fit in the pocket. On your belt is a knife, maybe a canteen, multi tool, axe.., just no room for a gun. If your not wearing a backpack, the mini revolver is an option.

I can fit a snubbie in every pair of pants I own. Others cant though im sure. I see the point now....

Primativeman, you talkin bout me?

Hahaa!

No J, I'm not talking about anyone in particular. LOL

Just want to make sure a short barrel .22 can crack someone in the dome if needed.
