Survival knives!

A survival knife is whatever knife you have on you when you really need a knife........

Ain't that the truth! Even a pocket knife can make like a lot easier in the wilds. A knife is not needed for us humans as we can make do with a stone or a found old bone, But ill take a blade any day.

Hi BG,

I first thought you were trolling but I admit I was wrong and you're actually looking for a knife. The question that is still open is for what do you want to use it. If it is for outdoor purposes then a smaller (up to 5 inches) knife, a folder or a multitool will suffice. 150 US$ is quite a bit of money, don't waste it on something that you will only look at a couple of times and then it will gather dust.

For EDCing a small blade again is a plus because knife laws might limit what you are allowed to carry. A folder or a multitool will be more useful and practical to carry in most cases than a fixed blade. Besides a Bowie might bring you into conflict with the "friendly" neighbourhood officer.

If it is for self defence then I have many questions. Do you really "want" a knife for self defense. No offense but this would be a bad idea that might cause unintended consequences further down the line. Rather join a fighting sport like boxing, muai thai or grappeling. You will meet new people, fight and as a side effect learn how to defend yourself. If you are in high school join the wrestling team, one thing I've learned in fighting is that you should never mess with somebody who wrestles (style be it graeco-roman, bjj, judo, etc. doesn't matter). Just avoid anything that preaches fighting as an art (usually pseudo asian stuff :D).

If you want a knife for the looks, then go to the custom forum, 150 US$ will get you a beautiful knife. Just don't forget to dust it off from time to time. :)

If you really, really want serrations, dork ops has plenty.

jca21: with that said perhaps you should look into a red scorpion six survival knife. it has the attributesyou are looking for. http://www.redscorpionsix.com/

That website is hilarious. The first video gave me the impression they cut away at the end right before he chopped his own hand off at the wrist.

The second video unbelieveably topped it, he's stabbing into an object the other guy is holding up -in front of his own body-. It was like watching the married with children episode where Jefferson and Al are using the power tools.

It appears that fact IS indeed stranger than fiction.
I call for the renaming of the Gerber LMF 2.
Why?
Because the Gerber Steadfast is exactly what the originally named Gerber LMF looks like!

Old knives never die, they just get outsourced and retagged.
Mind boggling to say the least...

ps "blood grooves" are a myth, they are called fullers and they ad stiffness to the blade, nothing else

and they can reduce friction to stiff sticky media, like potato's.

I say ontario canning knives :D I bought 5 of them and stash them around the house and car. with a 100 grit edge, they are very sharp and worth the price.

Owwww. The pain. The OPs posts are downright PAINFUL. Not because of his views or wants, just because of the terrible spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Hurts my head trying to read it. :P

That said, I'm 25, and I do very much remember wanting knives based on the way they look... actually, my father really ragged on the Recon Tanto I bought, largely because of the point. Amusing since many people here would say the RT is a great bush knife. To be fair, though, most would agree that his D.H. Russell original is a better choice. Frankly, I still can't get over the looks, and I've started drifting towards more practical designs like moras (Love my new Mora!) or Ontario RATs.

The fact is, if you don't like a knife, you won't be happy carrying it, and you won't use it. In a survival situation, any knife is better than no knife, and a knife you're familiar with has a big edge over knives you aren't.

Sorry I can't give any actual input for specific knives, because serrations drive me crazy and always have. I'd much rather have a straight edge.

Anyway, don't pay attention to anyone here who says a knife you like is garbage. DO pay attention if they say it's shitty steel or has a lousy heat treat or if the company's a bunch of dicks.

... and pay attention in your English classes. :P

thanks khalnath thats exactly the way i think if i dont like it i wont want to use it.

oh and sorry if i miss spelt words im no the best speller when im typing.

Survival knife is nice to have, but it's even more helpful if the sheath does more than carry the knife. Here's mine and I PACKED the pouch with the necessaries, 2 flashlights, one extra battery, fishing leader, hooks & a couple of flies, 1 latex glove + enough tablets to purify 4 gallons of water, diamond nail file, wind/waterproof matches & flashpaper, two one-time-use Betadines . Beat that:D

whats the name of that knife in that picture and does it come with the sheath. but even bet to carry stuff with that same sheath and a hollow handle chris reeves carry twice as many thinks and not sacrafic room:):):):):):):):)

I'm surprised no one mentioned a Mission knife. Mission's president, John Moore, was in infantry in WW2. He told me that is where his idea for a indestructible multi-purpose knife came from-combat. Yes, you'll pay more but you'll have a knife beyond belief. My MPT is THE knife I take when I'm in the bush.

very nice knife. It appears to have a hollow grind. If it was a flat/sabre grind it would be perfect.

It's called the GearNinja - Outdoorsman.
- Yes. Hollow Grind. NO! a Flat grind would not be better unless ALL you're doing is skinning game. A hollow grind is ideal for a survival knife in that it balances a low friction cutting action for carving wood with a strong spine for use as a lever while minimizing blade weight. Flat ground blades of more than 3/4" tend to bind in wood.
- The Sheath is a custom fitted Spec Ops sheath
- Chris Reeve is a fine person and a good listener! His work is top notch as we all know. The hollow CYLINDRICAL handle is great but not for handling a knife- Sorry!
- Finally, the most useful SURVIVAL component of the Spec Ops sheath is really the paracord on it!

i've herd over and over agian that hollow ground knifes shouldn't be uses as a survival knife becuase of their tendencey of bending and chiping the blade. i guess if you had some way to sharpen it it would be fine but if you dont i would perfer a more stonger but still will do fine in chopping and cutting. hollow ground knifes cut and chop very well though.:)

I was under the impression that hollow grinds were a great geometry for skinning game. I guess Buck and Dozier have been wrong all these years
