Survival!!!

No much love for the SR101 in this thread yet. Its seems to be all about the infi. Also suprised to hear so many calling for a larger blade, I'm wondering about this, I personally am a large knife guy even when it comes to folders, but generally I read many posts with people favoring a smaller knife..my hunting partners give me crap for bringing my TGLB on hunts, the same "whatdaya need a knife like that for". my response is the standard anything I want is what its for.

You all run across this?

I think this is par for the course, A LOT of people use a 3-3.75" blade for a skinning knife. IMO this site works well for the field dress but not as well for the actual meat processing (it can do it though). Most guys who aren't knife guys will just fight through it with the small knife and get it done. I prefer a 5.5-6" like my hg55 for my area and the size of deer here. It is whispy enough for the field dress and long enough to cut out tenderloins and butterfly hind quarters with out having to cut a little and then get in deeper and cut a little more. For bear I use 2 knife combo, small for the field dress and bigger for the meat processing. I have just never been a fan of the small knife only line of thought.

I'm also very tired of the prejudice against knives that we see in our societies. I have never used or carried a knife for self defense purposes. I love the usefulness of the tool and the looks of many knives, yet I can be arrested if an officer believes that I'm carrying for self defense.... I find it utterly ridiculous to be penalized for something that someone else "thinks" that I MIGHT do, and not for something that I have done.
But that's another debate, for another thread..... Off the soapbox I go;)

I got what you are saying while hunting I always carried two knives one on me say less than 4" blade. I have a brad zinker (older knife) that I used a lot for skinning and capping if I was saving for trophy. When I could not afford anything I had a large case folder bowie style it worked well for skinning. Then in the pack I have a 5 to 7" blade for anything else. Since I got the NMSFNO I would think that would be the second knife in the pack. I know it is heavier but the blade with will let it do anything that I could see I need to do.

For me it would be my B11 hanging from my belt Rat Trap in my pocket and Vex in my pack. Everything else would be in my Maxpedition pack on my back. I have seen to many horses get spooked and run off to strap anything to them. My bow and arrows would be strapped to my pack as well.

I do these trips every year elk and deer hunting. I take the R6. It's a great heavy skinner, big enough to fight with, chops, and can even handle the delicate stuff. Instead of packing another small knife, I just pack a small diamond stone. I save weight on a lot of things, but not my knife, binos, or rifle.

My LArue PRedatAR and my Battle mistress. I can solve all my problems with those two.

My wife says it's her Basic 8 LE. She informs me that not only is it great for digging a hole for going to the bathroom in the woods, but it also performs extremely well for pounding into the dirt to use as a handle when "hovering" during aforementioned bathroom going.

I informed her that it should also do reasonably well for use as a knife. You know, making it a multi-use item.

If I were hunting, there will be a B4, HRLM or RMD for sure... and of course I would just make the call for my private helicopter on the satphone I have with me... ;) ;)

My Busse 1/300 Battle Mistress in the original sheath. I can pretty much survive anything with this blade and the original sheath keeps it safe.

your Busse SHBM 1/300 or your Busse ASHBM 1/300?

I keep a RMD in a Spec-Ops sheath on my hip whenever I'm deer or pig hunting. Mine is the Prototype version because it has a slightly longer blade and because honestly I was never too fond of the sabre grind on the standard RMD. I wrapped the handle in some camo tape because the black paper scales, while aesthetically pleasing, does not offer much grip to me. The camo tape was a quick & easy fix plus I kinda like how it looks.

Anyway, I have been very pleased with having this knife on me while out in the field. However, I must admit that it will probably be replaced once I get my Gunner 12 from Blackheart Knives.
