Bad Survive! Deserves A Permanent Post In The Hall Of Shame

McConnell hotel fire, August 29th, 2017, in Kellogg, Idaho. Thursday is the anniversary. I always wondered about that. Given the characters of Guy and Ellie, I suspected the worse case scenario. Arson and insurance fraud? Who knows?
It looks like the statute of limitation for Arson in Idaho is ten years, so it will soon be a cold case. Did they take advantage of the trusting folks of Kellogg, or are they just victims of an unfortunate random event?

Bumbling idiots or successful con artists exiting the game with a sizable monetary score. I tend to believe that it’s the latter. If there is a divorce in the process, I would think that Ellie knows every shady detail, so they would need to settle out of court, rather than risk exposing all financial records and LLCs that could get federal and state tax people involved.
The only problem I have with that is that premise is unprovable because it also assumes Guy’s so crafty that you can’t prove it. I think it’s more likely there’s not going to be anything to find, aside from grossly unethical business practices.

I think there’s a tendency to make Guy out to be some master mind, which I don’t get. The guy’s an oaf whose only real talent was being personable enough to keep his insolvent company going for a decade using unethical preorders.

What’s the connection to Guy and Ellie?

You don’t need to be a genius master mind to cook the books, and hide some money. The practice has been going on for hundreds of years, and a good many get away with it. Even a person with very basic education could inflate purchase records and expenses, etc. It’s also commonly done to avoid tax liability.

It's behind a paywall, but The Spokeman had this blurb which was googleable.
*snip* In August, 2016, the hotel was sold to Seiferd Holdings for $150,000 – $100,000 less than its asking price of $249,000. Seiferd's founder, Guy *snip*

Had the place for a year then it burned down?
That's incredibly suspicious.
Interestingly there were 2 other fires that day in that same area, which seemed remarkable to the report above.
Can't seem to find anything that indicates a cause, but it was owned by Guy and Ellie so arson will always be in the back of my mind.

I just question if Guy is really smart enough to have pulled this off as a con and hidden away money his history makes me think more likely he is a fool who failed foolishly even if his intentions were dishonest it doesn't look like a case where he was successful with it as a grift either.

I mean, if I was running a con I wouldn’t wait until I couldn’t deliver before I cut and run- there’d have to be a better exit strategy that doesn’t smack you right in the sights of legal action. This whole thing smells like it just petered out and a couple setbacks killed it… just as you might imagine a guy with more confidence than knowledge would do it.

A grift is a grift, whether you invest wisely, or blow it all on daily vices.

It's all so incredibly suspect, isn't it.

TBH, I don't have much doubt that they set this up as another con..

I don't know anything about divorce but could it be a means to try and send one partner off with the money while the other appears to go down with the ship?
