Survive! Knives Heads Up

Pretty much...could've gotten one other Monday but couldn't go thru with it.

Me too! I hesitated to mention it before, but I actually got one in my cart when I was at work. I had 3.87 seconds of thinking "is there a way I could order this just to feel the handle and see the finish and later parlay a trade to a 4.7?" but there are way too many guys out there who TRULY want one. I'd like to think that the one I let go got into the hands of someone who doesn't have one and not someone who will try to make a profit on ebay or those guys who are looking for their 3rd one just because.

I got on right when it went live..I did the same thing, I had a first in 20v and a second in 3v in cart along with a necker... I was all the way to the final screen, and paused...I thought for a second do I truly want these given my dislike for choils so I backed out removed em so someone who truly wanted em could get em, but in doing do i lost my necker, all gone by then....I kinda wish I'd gotten the second now for the price just to try out, now that I have the 10 & actually kinda like the choil on it.. Or I wish I'd gotten em to keep em out of the scalpers hands to resell to someone who truly wanted it.

O well, I got another inbound new 4.1 with jimping today instead lol Damn these addictive knives....really wanna pre-order a 4.5, 6, 10, &12 now.

You're a good man, Bobby! Too bad you had to forfeit the N2, though. You'll get another chance!

The 10 is a knife where I'm eager to try the choil. Due to the length of the blade, it totally makes sense and I've heard it has a bigger, more comfortable choil than the ESEE 6. That is the only knife I've used with a choil and I did not enjoy it.
Nice score on the 4.1. Was it on the exchange?

If only I liked the choil

I like a choil on my BK9 and TGLB but my BK2 feels good without it. Not sure if I will want one on a 6" blade or not so I have a GSO 6 pre-ordered and snagged a GSO 5.1 on the March 7 sale just in case I do like a choil on that size blade. My Fat Ash has a choil and I could take it or leave it, never handled a survive before so I figured I'd get both to see.

It definitely works on the 10 given the size of the blade..It makes it more balanced when doing anything other than chopping, also the recessed area of the spine at the choil further aids the function and comfort. It's much larger than the choil on the esse 6...those blades are also what determined my dislike for choil, esse4&6...the 4 was utterly useless as it was so small my finger rested partially on the cutting edge, and the 6 I found to just be wonky feeling thou better than the 4... The 5.1 appears larger than that of the 6 but don't really see a necessity on that size blade to have one...I can choke up plenty on my gso6. Maybe I'll pick one up eventually...

No, I got it before it was posted to the exchange, same guy I got my 10 from.

The one on the gso 10 has me looking at my bk9 and considering to add one and Deramp it...they really shine on a large blade... If I only had a 10 on me I feel confident I'd be able to accomplish the heavy tasks and finer tasks relatively easy. Like I said my gso 6 I don't really feel like a choil would be any more beneficial.

Bobby, I like how you think.

I've had no problem making a modest try stick (nothing fancy like what Standard can do, but just basic notches) with my bk9.

I read a few times and saw in an interview that Guy designed the GSO 10 as a one knife option. People see the 10 inch blade and kept insisting it was a chopper, so I guess maybe the 12 was born to show what a real chopper looks like!

Wish I had deramped my BK9 when I had the choil added, had it cerakoted at the same time so hate to deramp it right now.

I thinking that GSO 6 might be the way to go, choil might not be needed and it will have the new heat treat also shouldn't be too long before I receive my GSO 5.1 2nd in 3V so I can mess with it while I'm waiting for the GSO 6.

Cold One, is that your knife in your signature? I thought it was wishful thinking that The Warrior rendered for you. I do not love the ramp on my bk9, and the recession opposite the choil that Bobby described sounds pretty nice to me.

Yea I think a deramping and maybe a lil recessed area along with a choil is in my 9's future.

It already does finer tasks reasonably well, but I think it'd greatly aide in its usefulness across the board.

Yeah, that's my BK9, I didn't mind the ramp before but the choil makes it a little awkward now I can live with it but would be nicer without the ramp, someday I will deramp it. Flat spine or a little recession as mentioned would be nice I bet.

Nice!!! I MAY have dainty, tender thumbs from not enough dirt time, but the ramp did not make my try sticking any more enjoyable.

Becker heads in the house! I thought I preferred choil-free knives until I tried out my first ash. Now I'm conflicted! I decided to snag a 5.1 and use it and see what I thought, but really want to add a 6 too for a head to head. This thread hit me at a good time, I have two buddies who after going camping in January want to jump into the knife game. I was able to snag one of them a fact-2nd 5.1 in one of the Monday sales(I warned him up front about the shipping wait:) ) the other isn't quite ready to spend as much, I recommended the BK-2, mk-2, and an Ontario rat 7. Not to derail this thread (pm me if you'd prefer) but does anyone have thoughts on those three? I know the biggest difference is length and thickness, but I don't have any experience with any of them!

So much easier to just say: get a 5.1!

What's the ended purpose? Other than camp knife..do they plan on chopping allot but want a smaller blade if so the bk2 chops remarkably well for its size...id chopping is a must and size doesn't have to be smaller a bk7, or 9 are great options...If there's no need for chopping and only light batoning the bk16 will handle those tasks easily while being allot lighter than the 2...another good all around camp knife is a tops BOB.

I would say general camp knife, batoning yes, chopping probably not. I suggested the mk-2 because it's a little thinner and longer, but he was really hoping to spend around $75. His original target was a gerber, but it wasn't even full tang.

The only Gerber I'd say isn't half bad is the strong arm..But I'd say get the bk16 over it thou...it'll handle most batoning tasks within reason.

Bobby knows! He gave some good advice. I'd suggest the bk7. It's right around the price point and not too big. I haven't had much success with my bk2 because I never took the time to reprofile the edge. I really like my bk16 but it might be small for what your friend wants.

EDIT: Ok I'm a little slow here, but were you referring to the Ritter mk2? If that's the one you meant, I'd highly suggest it not from my own use (sadly) but based on dimensions and intended use. Except.......... the price is $125.

I thought about suggesting that one as well, he was looking at the LMF2 I will also point him to the BK-16. I figure for his price point 1095 is his best bet, 3v one day :-D

Thanks for the help! Is the deal with the mk-2 that it's just a bit pricier due to its exclusive nature?

My go to recommendation for anyone right now is the gso 5.1 so I'm a little out of my depth with this recommendation

Edit: thanks silver! I will recommend that as well. That is the one silver, price was the only reason I didn't push it harder
