Even for woodcraft I'm in the no choil (despise em actually) group...I see no benefit of em on a sub 6-7"blade..now get up to the 10 then it's actual beneficial for wielding a large blade for fine tasks.
A person has to go with whatever feels right in his (
or hers) hands, regarding the tasks which he (
or she) wishes to handle with that tool (
knife in this case)
While I respect your opinion, I do not share the sentiment and without going into too much into details at the expense of hijacking this thread (
it is a heads up thread after all!) I would just say this:
The GSO 5.1 is a deceptively large knife for a knife with about a 5" cutting edge so it is a "tweener" and IMHO, Mr. Seiferd has hit a gem with that one as I believe it to be one of his most popular production models getting rave reviews.
I also realize and appreciate that there are a lot of truly diehard S!K fans on here (
well it is a sub forum dedicated to their knives, isn't it?
) but I consider myself more of a practical realist as opposed to a pure fanboy (
for lack of a better word) Let me give you an example:
I generally do NOT like ESEE knives and got rid of every single one which I have had in the past!!! I have had Izula, 4s, 5s and 6s from ESEE. However if I wanted a 10" knife, I'd go with a Junglas at the expense of a GSO10, even if the GSO 10
has a choil of which I am actually a fan of (Junglas does not) The reason? I'd only use that 10 incher as a pure chopper and prefer the cheaper Junglas which I can field sharpen a lot easier than one made from a 3V super steel (
on the field)
When it comes to Survive! knives, I am actually a bigger fanboy of their 2.7" inch to 6" range as the larger ones become a bit cost prohibitive for me, although they are very well worth it and are actually under priced as compared to a direct competitor's product made with similar (
or even less) amount of care and craft!
