Survive! knives

Really nice! I have a few 3.5's coming. Hmmm...they have the premium handle too. Maybe I e-mail them again.

Just to be clear. I ordered the knife with the Ghost G10. I needed it for a fishing trip and the Ghost G10 wasn't in. Thanks to Josh being the superstar he is at customer service, I ordered the yellow G10 and they shipped my knife last week with the yellow installed . The Ghost scales just came in yesterday.

Wolverine, I use both the 4.1 and 5.1 for hunting. The 4.1 makes a great camp knife. The 5.1 is big enough that if I got stuck out overnight (that's happened a couple times), I could make a shelter and fire, etc. The choil on the 5.1 also allows you to choke up when processing game. If I had to choose one all around GSO for hunting, especially if there were going to be elk involved, I'd go with the 5.1. Better to be a little too large than too small. Of course, I've seen bull elk dressed out with a Buck 110 before but I wouldn't do it. :D

Don't you think a GSO 5 is a better all around knife? Its a 5.1 blade length w/o choil.

It depends if you like or dislike a finger choil. Some people love them, some people hate them, and some are indifferent, but there is no "better than the other" outside of opinion.

Depends on if you field dress and butcher on the spot to pack out. If that's the case I'd go with the 3.5, mostly for the 1/8" blade adding a little more efficiency in cutting proteins. If you're looking for all around camp/SHTF/hunting knife Hale's right about the 4. I personally bring a few knives with me depending on what I'm hunting and what I'm doing after.

That's actually inaccurate. The GSO-5 is ~3/4" shorter than the GSO-5.1, all in the blade-length, with ~0.40" less cutting edge. The GSO-5.1 more closely matches a GSO-6 with an enlarged choil.
The 5.1 has more reach and slightly more weight than the 5 which also lets it chop a little better (as much as either can chop).
The GSO-5, to my thinking, is a heavier, more comfortable (handle) version of the 4.1. Some may prefer it to the 4.1 or 5.1 as it fits just between those in size, but I personally favor the longer reach of the 5.1 for most tasks. For hunting deer, I like the capabilities of the 4.1 in such a light package, though I'd modify the handle to better suit my hand-size (i.e. grind off the heel lateral flare). My $0.02

Agree with you on this. Hope this helps illustrate GSO 5's belly is a little better for skinning, but not enough to really notice. The biggest difference might be depending on your hand size and build, where your hand is "guided to" by the choil for more of a chopping leverage where the GSO 5 the handles are further up on the blade meaning more blade control towards the tip if you're choking up on the blade for fine work. Just depends on how you like to hold your blades. I made this to help illustrate the detailed differences. (darker one is the 5.1)

Used my 5.1 for a very important task this weekend! I whittled marshmallow sticks for my kids. Overkill? Maybe, but hey!

My dad asked to look at the knife and was impressed. I told him all about the company and his reply was "man, talk about a guy with an eye for detail!"

I asked why do you say that?

He says... "Everything on this knife is perfect, and the slots for the handle screws are even all facing the same direction."

What about the differences in width between the 5.1 and 4.1. For field dressing and quartering I like a knife that isn't very wide. It makes task like cutting around the anus easier.

If you're choking up on the tip with your index finger the blade length or width wont be as differential. Tis why I was recommending the 3.5 given my experience with the GSO line. All of them including the neckers could field dress and butcher an animal much larger than you'd think. I feel the 3.5 id just close enough to the size of the 4.1, but with all the details I wished the 4.1 had. On most mule deer and sheep/pigs/goats I use a 2"-3" knife. I usually just bring a laplander, folding saw or a leatherman with a saw to cleave the hip bones in two and split to make a channel and avoid playing with backdoor. I like to hang my quarters, which is why I was askin earlier. I agree about the not that wide part. Exactly why I got me a Dan Eastland skinner, but it's nice to have both blade profiles when breaking down anything IMHO. My ideal butcher blade thickness is around 2.0mm, but in the field a little bulkier 1/8 won't hurt, anything more and you're doing twice the work unnecessarily. And with a knife thicker than a havalon you spend less over time, all you gotta do is upkeep the blade with a strop. I'd love to get a field dress like a chef video, but our big game season isn't until late fall.

What do you folks think of a GSO-8? I am thinking a shortened GSO-10. Same grind and width making it a nice midsized fat camp knife. I had a short discussion with Guy about this a couple years ago when Survive was just taking off. He thought it was a good idea but it has never happened. I know I would buy two of them. Am I alone on this or can we get enough interest to convince Guy to do it?

At one time there was a full convex model is that still true?
Is the GSO 5 full convex? Is there any chance it will be an option?

Just finished counting up Premium GSO-3.5 handles and got the extras listed at SurviveKnives.com!

If I'm reading this statement correctly, it sounds like you received premium handles, counted what you needed for orders, then put the remainder up for sale. If this isn't correct, disregard what follows.

I'm not telling Guy how to run his business, but this is one example of a place I would suggest you pump your brakes. I realize that the extra handles represent revenue, but instead of just counting up all the handles and then immediately start to sell off the extras, try filling and shipping all the preexisting orders first. I would then double check, and triple check, that nobody has been left behind somehow, and then put the extras up for sale. Example, there have been a few lost orders surface in this thread simply by people seeing pictures of shipped knives and wondering where theirs is. It's only later, that they find out there was a server error and the order wasn't received, and the hoop jumping starts. Crap happens, we all get that.

It's the little details that S!K is going to have to get squared away to minimize some of the order fulfillment issues that plague you.

Just a suggestion from a happy S!K customer, and multiple small business owner.

Finally got my shipping email.
Tracking says my 4.1 rough 2nds is out for delivery now. Best believe I'm sitting here at work constantly refreshing the USPS tracking page :)

I plan to go grab it on my lunch break. Pics to follow...

I agree on the "But not enough to really notice."

I have spent the last 5 days here.

The GSO 5.1 It is more than usable as a skinner. To be fair it comes down to the user. I have ordered the GSO 3.5 with the thought I would used it as a skinner, I will yet the GSO 5.1 does the job.

Once the GSO 3.5 turns up I will give it a bash. I'm picking it will be a nice little skinner, especially on smaller game and a nice slicer. Ellie, will it be a nice slicer...? :)

Just a suggestion from a happy S!K customer, and multiple small business owner.
A very valid point. I'd like to think the team at S!K have thought about the possibilities of lost orders and its not happening nor will it happen again.

All wrapped up like trout from the supermarket.

I went with the "Red & Black" scales, sight unseen. The red is a little darker than I had imagined, but still, pretty nice.

Only sign it's a second that I can really see is fact that the spine has a bunch of little "striations" or lines that I guess weren't ground out fully. In my opinion, a very minor flaw.

All in all, she was well worth the wait. I knew she would be. All I ever wanted was to be kept informed of my order status, but I understand that with limited crew, they have to prioritize.
I will say, I think the feedback / communication coming from S!K has greatly improved in the last few weeks.
They seem to be keeping everyone fairly up to date on what's going on and roughly when to expect things to ship out.
