Survive! Sheaths and standard attachments that fit them

And it's nice for me to get mentioned with you pros (Chiral and Kiah)...

I keep missing commenting on statements like this, but I just want everyone to be aware that Chiral (me) is NOT the same level of "pro" as Hale Storm and Kiah... or Azwelke or Mashed Cat or Dave Brown or RainWalker or Zwinkels or .... I don't make custom sheaths. I've made a couple for my own knives, sold those sheaths with the knives if I had to, but that's it. I just make a couple of accessories. I don't even have a website ;) If you want to see some awesome kydex creations, stick close to these guys

What all is involved in doing a kydex/leather hybrid? Is it full kydex inside the leather or just a ring for the handle portion to snap in? I have heard of them and been curious how they were constructed.

There are a couple types of kydex/leather hybrids I've seen. One is the "moo-dex" or "cow-dex" :) which I understand to be a full kydex sheath-liner wrapped in leather like Zwinkels': http://www.martinsheaths.com/DesignFeaturesandOptions.php

Dave Brown and others offer "mutant" variations on this with full kydex sheaths layered over with leather: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1263830-Pig-Skin-Mutant-©

And then there is the combination offered at least by Sagewood but probably others as well, a leather sheath with holes drilled to allow kydex attachments like the sheath pictured above. I am actually rather annoyed by the limitations of the design of that sheath - the holes are spaced for their attachment but NOT for other accessories, e.g. Tek-Lok. It'd have been easy for them to place riveted holes at more frequent intervals to increase the versatility of the sheath but *shrug* what they offer works, it's just really expensive.

I'm a cheap-skate, happy to stick with Kiah (or others) doing kydex and Leatherman (or others) doing leather. What's great about some of the leather sheaths is how many different brands/models can fit the same sheaths :) like the BHK sheath that fits the 3.5 - awesome

The 710 is a member here who does hybrids. I've heard very good things about his work. I do not have any myself, yet.

Dave must make a couple different types of his 'mutant' sheaths. Mine doesn't look like the one in the link. It is a kydex back with a leather front. If I were to order a hybrid, I would want a fully formed kydex sheath wrapped in leather so that the retention performs like a kydex sheath. Mr. Brown is a great bender BTW.

The sheaths Martin Swinkels made looked awesome. I was never able to get ahold of one, and unfortunately he got banned here due to some of his business practices. By all accounts the sheaths themselves were fantastic.

This is pretty much where I'm at as well. The one place I find myself wishing for a hybrid sheath is if I'm still-hunting. I hate the unnatural sound of rifle stock bumping into kydex, and this gets my belt knife thrown into my pack when I forget. And it's not like I can't wear a blade in a leather sheath for that, but I love the easy draw of a kydex sheath and tend to go with kydex. I would definitely consider spending the extra on a dedicated belt knife hybrid for this.

JD (710) is active in the Becker forum and seems pretty cool. He even makes boltaron (not sure how it is different than kydex) sheaths that are sold directly from Kabar.

David makes some very nice leather over Kydex sheaths. The basketweave is very cool.

I had to Google that webbing! Talk about something that'll handle a beating and take nearly any type of weather that you throw at it.

FedEx dropped something off Today.

They are a bit loud. :)

Just a sample ring. The big rolls are black and textured. I may pick up some of the brown and orange at some point though.

That orange is really jumping out at me. It'll be nearly impossible to lose a rig with any of those bright colors.

Man you have that set up nicely!

Thanks! My wife thinks of this as me being "crafty". I just enjoy thinking things through then figuring out what might work best. In this case i chose the old "sh*t got real and I need to survive 1-2 nights" If I was really on the ball i'd get another aaa battery holder and remove the battery from the flashlight to help prevent accidental discharge... not gonna worry bout it though...The micra leatherman came today to round the kit out.

I figured all the "trash" i was talking on my 5.0's grip in the other forum, I had to post this up to show it some love. I think my love of the 4.1 is bolstered by my love of my sagewood sheath, its just such a streamlined package.

IF/When I order a 6.0, this pack might migrate to that sheath....

What do you think of the micra? I've been dropping hints for one for Christmas to replace the Leatherman style I have on my keychain. The style cs is a nice tool, but I've almost lost it 10 different times because the clip pops off my key ring.

It is pretty cool. I like the separate capsules for organizing plus all your stuff will be fine if you happen to take an unexpected dip.
I'm still blown away by all that trash talk!

Haha poor discontinued 5.0!! I really like the knife and have slowly been turning it into my survival bulldog setup

Silver: the micra is pretty great for what it is. I really like the scissors and bits, and I'm sure the knife could do "something" The size is very small but seems really stout for what it is. Plus for $18 its hard to beat!!

Got my UKE from Chiral and had a chance to set it up on my Delta 5. Here are a couple of pics:

On a side note... if anyone is nervous about buying one because this is just a sideline for Chiral, don't be. Less than 1 hour after I sent him money via PayPal I got a shipping confirmation from USPS! Everything that was supposed to be included was - so no missing parts or pieces - and it was all packed in a thick plastic bag with a zip lock (not the kind you put a sandwich in). He promptly replied to emails before the sale, answered every question and included a ton of pictures to show me everything before I ordered. Class act all the way.

I don't expect the micra to get me through a night in the woods, but I do like having all those tiny tools on my keychain.

Ok ok ok as far as opinions on the 5's handle, I don't have the perspective like a lot of you do. Which handles do you like better and why?

Even though I enjoy a sweet becker from time to time, I still love the feel of the 5. I must be missing something here!

Lookin good, Jman! Chiral is pretty awesome
Glad to hear you're so happy with all the aspects of the transaction.

Was going to put '+1' here, but it's more like 'x 1000.' No worries dealing with Chiral, and his uke design solves a bunch of carry issues.

Looks like you guys got the issues figured out with the Delta sheath/uke attachment

I really like seeing homegrown solutions going mainstream so to speak, I also love seeing how various users solutions can be adapted for other people: good ppl helping good ppl, aint that just the best? ok ok ill calm down.

silver: for a keychain solution, you 100% can't go wrong, I haven't used it much so not sure overall durability, but anecdotally i think it will be great. As for the 5.0 handle, I think its great, I just like the fit of the 4.1 slightly better for my tiny girly hands. :)
