Svord Peasant MINI

Hey guys, I was looking at getting a regular Svord, but your comments about it opening up in-pocket confused me. I thought you could adjust the tension so it wouldn't be an issue?

I don´t own one of these, not the regular one and not the slim version. But when you look at the knife; you can adjust it at the pivot pin because of the screws. But there´s the long angle outside where to open the knife and this could be an issue when sitting down, crouching or what ever. This long angle needs the pull on it. If you adjust this too strong, you can´t open then knife, even if you want to. So this means, there needs to be some "play" on that construction of getting opened. There´s not backspring or whatever, so you need to put force on that long angle. While in pocket, it might get opened, even you don´t want it that way.

Hope this explanation helps a little (maybe I´m wrong - but it´s because of the construction).

I am pretty excited to see this as well.

I have considered adding the original to my humble knife collection but it was just too big and awkward to carry IMHO.

This new one seems like it will work very well, and a nice little pocket sheath can be made up rather easily. A pocket clip to keep it in the right place it would be great.

I'm a fan, have had one for about 3, maybe 4 years, steel takes a great edge, I keep mine convexed. It's my woods knife when I don't want to carry a fixed blade, I also use it snowshoeing, it's easy to use with gloves on. A smaller version will be great for a EDC utility knife.

Nice shot!

The winter use aspect is something I need to consider.

How do these knives behave in wet weather?

How do they carry in the pocket?

LOL

Did you even read the thread?

Pocket carry with these is terrible, and that is why people are excited for the new mini.

The long tang, and overall width of the original make it uncomfortable, and bending over or movement that puts pressure on the tang while in your pocket causes it to open at times.

A friend of mine has a few of these and I was ready to buy one from him but in the pocket it is just not good in it's original form IMHO.

You are correct, I've never had a issue with it opening in my pocket. I keep the screw at the butt end when open, tip when closed with more tension, this keeps it closed until you want it to open. It takes a little trial and error to find the sweet spot with both screws.

Pinnah I find them to work well when wet, I've never had any issues as far as rust or swelling. I keep in back pocket, front pocket with lanyard hanging out or jacket pocket.

Mmm, I do like the L6 steel. Agreed about the grind lottery, I've got a Deluxe 320BB with a superb thin convex grind. I worked on my Peasant to get a good edge on it. Succeeded but the amount of metal behind the grind compromised the knife in my opinion. I'd pay extra for the Peasant with a full convex grind.... Bryan, if you're listening....:)

Imperfect grind out of the box is part of the fun on these blades in my opinion; this was first "real" knife that I attempted to convex the edge - the price was right and the steel works great. A smaller version will be perfect.

It'll fill a certain void in the market, seeing as it's the one of the few pocket friendly friction folders. I think it'll prove to be a strong seller,

Oh heck yes! Can't wait until one of my distributors gets these in. I can't wait for 'em!

IMO, the pivot screw controls the tightness of the blade as it rotates. You want this to be fairly smooth, or the knife will be a pain to operate. The screws at the end of the handle (i.e. not the pivot) are the ones that control how tightly scales hold the blade/tang in the open or closed position.

For the blade to open in your pocket, it would take an odd combination of forces. Force would have to be applied at the ends only, with no force on the rest of the blade. I suppose this could happen, but it would be rare. I don't pocket carry mine often, but it has not opened unintentionally for me when I have.

ive mostly carried the peasant knife in the leg pocket of cargo pants and also once or twice in the back jeans pocket working in the yard. but i havent carried it often enough to be entirely sure it wont open when you are walking over uneven ground or crouching/bending down and straightening up a lot.
still, if peasant knives coming open in peoples pockets was common i suspect there would be threads about it.

havent carried mine in wet weather yet, although i got the orange plastic handle so it should be ok.

I just bought a red svord peasant.

if I like it I might see if tuffthumbz will customize it for me

As soon as anyone sees the mini's for sale let us know. I would love to check the cost (which I'm sure will be minimal). I want one even smaller.

I've not had a single problem with my Peasant opening in my pocket.
I'm gonna have to get one of these for the collection, but I'm not really liking the shallow short grind. Just looks too thick to me.

You think the stock might be thinner, like 1.5mm instead of 2mm?

I dunno. It'd be a good slicer no matter what the grind if it was.
I hope it's thinner overall, not just in the blade stock. The major downfall of the fullsize Peasant for me is the handle thickness.

To Answer some questions.. PS.. I'm not Svord, I just maintain Bryans Website.

I just bought a bunch of them. They are smaller in thickness, Handle and steel. They are very nice cutters.
The sharpness out of the box is kind of the same as always.. more like a burr formation that cuts rather than a honed edge.

They sharpen to arm shaving very quickly and come with a nice cutting geometry.

I've uploaded a video showing some of the ones I bought, and a demo of how quick it was to sharpen it.

Personally, the small one seems a lot nice to me, and more practical to carry for lighter tasks.
