Tactical Knife

i really really liked the look of the bark river Recon 1...that guy may be right up my alley and i hope to see one at the show this weekend.

The Cali BARF would work well for you.

Thanks Bro! I appreciate your looking out. There are actually plenty of numbers along the Busse linup that work exceptionally well for me, I was just throwing out an idea for consideration. I have to ask for understanding sometimes, I'm not the most tactful guy you've ever come across. And Jerry's one of the most generous guys you've come across, so I feel all jittery about suggesting things to a master.

There's also the "Busse Linup" to consider. Most of the time a perfect knife is there, it just may be from SRKW or SYKC. The Dumpster Mutt may be the most perfect "Warrior's knife" presently in existence. Bubba ain't breakin' that one.

I'm working desperately all night tonight to try to finish up most of the work I need to do this weekend, hoping I might be able to swing by the show for a few hours tomorrow. I've made good progress, but I don't know if it will be enough.

I already spent WAY more money than I planned to, but I've got some amazing knives to show for it, so it was worth it. I'm just proud I resisted all the awesome Busse Custom Shop offerings that were out on the table.

If you can't get your hands on a Basic 5, a Double Cut Dumpster Mutt is 9.7 ounces in a vest-quality sheath, and will do just as much except for the edge holding part. And cost you about $200 less. It's one of my favorites. S7 steel with as good a heat-treat as that steel can get, 1/4" thick... it's a lot to be happy about.

Oh, and for what it's worth, a Basic 5, if you can get your hands on one, will be about 9.3 ounces in a good sheath, and will give you 1/4" more cutting edge than the DMDC for about the same overall dimensions. The DMDC has a larger choil, as the difference. I'd give my full support to either of these.

The Dumpster Mutt Mod-7 comes with some nice spyderco-like serrations for about 1/3 of the blade, and a partial swedge grind toward the tip. It'll get you down in the 9.3 ounce range in a sheath, still 1/4" stock of burly S7. Take a serious look at this one.
Oh, and if you're interested, the Mod-7 resiprene handle is the basic line handle. The "Busse Combat" appears to be cut off with a razor blade.

I don't know why I didn't think of these earlier, I guess I was thinking INFI too much.

Of the Bussekin knives I have had which I have tried out as inverted carry on my tac vest the one I liked the best was the Ratmandu by Swamp Rat....the Dumpster Mutt Double Cut by Scrapyard was also good but the handle was a bit small for me....the Scrapper 5 by Scrapyard is very similar to a Ratmandu with a different "mudder" ( res C ) grip....if I wanted a pry bar ability above all else and a good size....the Dumpster Mutt Combat Grade by Scrapyard is a good choice but if money were no object Jerry has posted some new "thicker" knives in a recent post and the meaner street thicker variation would be about as good as you could get. It's called the Pork Highway. See Jerry's post on "Chubby Chasers".....

I am back from the blade show, and it was fantastic. I do have to admit, however, i was a little disappointed with the Busse table. Maybe its because i went on the last day but selection was slim. I did not see a single knife mentioned on this thread and probably only a few dozen total knives between busse and the sister companies. There wasn't anything there that fit what i was looking for, so i didn't get anything.

I did like a lot of the booths and tables though, i enjoyed the microtech display (ive got an ultratech) and i really liked their fixed blade knife, the currahee, which i almost bought. Strider table was cool and Richard Marcinko was there which was a pleasant surprise. I did buy one knife while i was there which may work really well for me. It is a Wilson Tactical fixed blade tool ( http://www.knifecountryusa.com/stor...1bk-wilson-tactical-fixed-blade-cop-tool.html ) that i am really excited about. It does just about everything i need a tool for at work.

All that being said i am still going to keep my eye out in the for sale section here for some of the suggestions above but i didn't see anything at that huge knife show that does anything better than my strider. I will just have to keep that one wiped down with my marine tuf cloth (another great table) and continue using it until i decide to try something else.

I appreciate all the suggestions here and when i do find the right busse i will let you know about it.

Well the last day may have suffered from the buying of stock on previous days but usually there is sufficient stock throughout. Especially when you consider that a Ganza to sell off surplus knives is usually done.

Of those mentioned such as the Dumpster Mutt and the Ratmandu these are knives no longer produced and need to be bought on the exchange. Let us know what you have gone for.

Good Luck in finding what you need.

I'm pretty sure I was at the table when you were there, Marsh (heard you asking about strapping the knife to your vest and it reminded me of this thread), and there was still a pretty dang good selection - not quite as good as Friday, but still decent.

Many of the knives that were mentioned in this thread are discontinued, and only available on the second hand market. Plus, some of the really cool stuff was only offered at special offer times during the day, and if you weren't around during those offers, you wouldn't even know those knives existed.

There was a smaller knife that was offered in a really beefy thickness that I was thinking would be perfect for you, but unfortunately I forget the name off the top of my head. I believe it was one of the "tequila sunrise" handles.

If I were you, I'd keep an eye out for the "ganzaa" post on this forum in a week or three, and try to snag something good from there. I'm surprised you didn't find anything you liked - there were still quite a few really nice knives left, including some amazing customs that, while pricey, felt great in the hand and had beefy spines.

I hope i didn't come off sounding like i was putting the busse knives down. They were absolutely fantastic blades, especially the customs, which are probably among the toughest in the business.

I have a very specific knife design in mind and i just didn't happen to find one that fit me personally at the table today. After checking out the previous models i have found some that i really like, but finding them may take a little time.

As a person who is brand new to the busse forums it seems like the company is headed into the custom knife direction as opposed to basic combat knives designed for real life use. Not to say that the customs aren't capable of it, they certainly are, but i find it hard to believe the folks are spending $500.00 and up for design features that are solely cosmetic to carry and use on a regular basis when the same blade can be (or could be at one time) had for cheaper without the custom elements. Yet busse is putting a lot of effort into turning out these customs knives and has gone so far as to discontinue the basic line. I dont run a company and i certainly am not complaining about they way they run theirs, i just wish they would make some of the more basic knives available on a semi regular basis.

Thats just my rant as a guy who would love to afford nicer things but works for the government!! I would also like to drive a BMW M5, but alas i am stuck with the Nissan Altima!!

You got there to late. There were some super deals on non custom pieces fri and sat. Catch em early next year if you get a chance.

Now that your search continues, you may want to consider the NARK:

It is a pretty decent "tactical" design.

Wow, sign me up for one of those!!!! Fantastic.

It may be too large to carry on my vest but i would buy it anyway!

Smaller knives you could also bag on the exchange are Swamp Rat Howling Rat, Scrap Yard Yard Keeper...but they are res c and figure you need to smash a window? Both are great carry sized blades, tough and for about $110-150...along with the SS4 ($220+)

Rat RC4 is cool too...I didn't like it for the woods...but doesn't sound like that's what it's for for you! Great sheath options also and for a great price...

Marsh, how small of a blade were you looking for, exactly? I picked these three up at the show, although none of them is particularly thick.

They were all good prices, too.
